@ihavenoname, I also heard many of those same rumblings around Lafayette concerning the donations and how they were being used. This is my opinion only. I donated a nice amount two different times to help find Mickey and also to help the family in any way possible. So, even if the money was used for the family to eat out at a restaurant together, that's perfectly fine with me. I wanted my money to help them in any way it could. If only I could change things for them, I would in a heartbeat. That's just an example of course but used it to make my point. You see, I have my beautiful daughter here with me, so whatever way they choose to use the funds I donated is just fine by me. JMO RIP sweet and Mighty Mickey

Nice Patticup, I also gave hoping the money could be put to good use and I'm sure it was.

I've heard that any money left over will go to a charity of their choice.

Not my first, or last sermon...

Folks, mother nature may keep the physical crowds away from missing/murdered person's celebrations as she did at he Mickey Shunick celebration on September 29, 2012. The folks that were there spiritually from LA & all over the US & beyond, were standing room only..

Mickey Shunick's legacy will not be, and should not be measured by the attendance of a celebration on one rainy day. Mickey Shunick's legacy will live on through all the folks that she has touched, as well as the many folks that she will touch in the future..

It is an anomaly when an innocent victim realizes their life's purpose at such a young age, and then acts on it.. The Mighty Mick, will be the catalyst for many innocent victims lives saved in the future...

Told ya...

Many folks will think that over time, people will move on and forget the sacrifice & legacy of the Mighty Mick and her contribution to awareness & the public safety of others.

On 01/04/2008 where I live in North GA, a tragedy occurred that mirrored the Mickey Shunick tragedy; the Meredith Hope Emerson abduction/murder from Blood Mountain, GA (AT). An animal lover, she had her black lab puppy companion; Ella, which was also abducted by a sexual predator which had been active for decades. She courageously sacrificed her young, selfless life for others, as did Mickey Shunick.

Almost five years later, her memory is still alive as if it was yesterday. There has been many DNA & other laws passed in GA to protect other unsuspecting innocent victims from predators in the future. One of the safety programs which is endorsed and promoted by Elizabeth Smart: Keep Ga Safe Keep Georgia Safe | Elizabeth Smart Foundation
elizabethsmartfoundation.org/keep-georgia-safe/KeepGaSafe Keep Georgia Safe Keep Georgia Safe is a 501 (C)(3) non-profit organization with the mission to provide safety education and crime prevention - http://elizabethsmartfoundation.org/keep-georgia-safe/
was born after the Meredith Emerson tragedy....

Day after tomorrow, 5 years later, there is an event by Right to Hike.Org, an org began by Hiker Meredith Hope Emerson's friends & many folks that didn't even know her, but wished that they did: History repeats itself...deja vu..

See You At the 5th Annual Ella's Run

Crimson clover, TY, if ya want to see deja vu, simply replace trail angel with bike trail angel Mickey Shunick. I can hardly wait to see the LA community's contributions to the Silent Epidemic. I have been really touched by their creativity & awareness:

"Fare Thee Well"

Fare thee well my bright star
I watched your taillights blaze into nothingness
but you were long gone before I ever got to you before you blazed past this address
and now I think of having loved and having lost you never know what it's like to never love
who can say what's better and my heart's become the cost
a mere token of a brighter jewel sent from above

fare thee well my bright star
the vanity of youth the color of your eyes
maybe if I'd fanned the blazing fire of your day to day
or if I'd been older I'd been wise
too thick the heat of those long summer evenings
for a cool evening I began to yearn
but you could only feed upon the things which feed a fire
waiting to see if I would burn

fare thee well my bright star
it was a brief brilliant miracle dive
that which I looked up to and I clung to for dear life
had to burn itself up just to make itself alive
I caught you then in your moment of glory
your last dramatic scene against a night sky stage
with a memory so clear it's as if you're still before me
my once in a lifetime star of an age

so fare thee well my bright star
last night the tongues of fire circled me around
this strange season of pain will come to pass
when the healing hands of autumn cool me down

Jennifer Pharr Davis hiked the AT in honor of Meredith Hope Emerson and John & Irene Bryant in the summer of 2008, setting a new womens record for hiking the Appalacian Trail..
Now she has set an all time record. She is an amazing person, as was GMH's many innocent victims.

Mountain Crossings a hikers’ paradise

For a guy whose job has him posted in the middle of nowhere, Winton Porter certainly draws a crowd.

Enlarge photo Jason Getz, jgetz@ajc.com A used hiker’s boot hangs in a tree along the Appalachian Trail that passes through Mountain Crossings at Walasi-Yi in Neels Gap near Blairsville. The hostel and outfitter’s store is a busy place this spring as hikers begin their Appalachian Trail adventure.

Winton Porter owns the Mountain Crossings outfitter and hostel at the Walasi-Yi Center on the Appalachian Trail near Blairsville, and, though he’s technically in the wilderness, there’s a lot of human wildlife on hand.

The Mountain Crossing Trading Post is only a few hundred yards from where Trail Angel Meredith Hope Emerson, was abducted on 01/01/2008

In a new memoir called “Just Passin’ Thru’: A Vintage Store, the Appalachian Trail and a Cast of Unforgettable Characters,” Porter writes about collecting what he calls the “wackos, heroes and friends” that have made that journey. It is this crew that makes Mountain Crossings the Algonquin Round Table of the hiking community

Elegy tribute for Meredith Hope Emerson: Blood Mountain Hiker:

An Elegy by Winton Porter
January 2008

Out on the trail, when a comrade falls, a trail angel rises.
Meredith, whose kind and loving spirit was cruelly taken from all those who knew and loved her, has joined the ranks of trail angels.
She will forever be our guide.

Because trail angels dance along the path of peace and joy forever.
Because trail angels watch over those who merely want to walk forever.
Those who simply want to live.
Those who want to live simply.
And beautifully as Meredith did.
Merediths light once illuminated the path of hundreds of friends and family members as well as among the many, many she touched along the graceful trail of her life.
The light Meredith brought us has not been extinguished.
It has risen.
It now illuminates the path of millions
Across our nation.
Around the world.
And as her light rises, we come to know its source.
A source inextinguishable.
An inner source.
It came from Merediths compassion.
Her kindness.
Her love of outdoors.
Her love of animals.
It now fires our love.
Our compassion.
Our resolve to live better lives.
Kinder lives.
It warms us, consoles us, unites us here and now.
And as her light rises,
It ignites in us the good of our natures.
It reveals to us the beauty of these mountains.
It fires in us a renewed joy for living, for those around us, for the walks we share today.
Her light reminds us not to wait but to love while we still can.
Now….Stop.…Listen.
Hush and truly listen.
Hear the drums?
Feel them on the wind?
Hear the human tales of triumph and sadness that echo through these vast and ancient mountains?
These are human tales, bouncing off the cliffs,
Reverberating among the high tree lines,
Following the deep gaps.
Filling our hearts.
Separateness is an illusion, my friends.
There is no me.
There is no you.
There is only We.
We of this earth.
We the one.
I am you.
You are me.
Together , we are bound by common experience:
Love. Life. Hope. Joy. Sorrow. Pain. Memory.
Meredith Emerson is you.
You are Meredith Emerson.
Follow her light.
It will guide you well.
Remember.

I loved the UL tribute for sweet Mickey! I hope they play it for BSL several times a day for the rest of his miserable life. He stole her life, he stole from her family & friends!

Nice Patticup, I also gave hoping the money could be put to good use and I'm sure it was.

I've heard that any money left over will go to a charity of their choice.

After the goodness and grace that we have seen from the Shunick family, I have no doubt this money will be used wisely and helping other people. Charlene it appears has become an advocate for missing persons. She is always posting links for missing persons. I am not worried about the funds one bit.

just watched the entire show on gary hilton and meredith emerson. i was aware of her case but now i didn't know he was involved in other murders as well. truly sickening there are so many murders in this world.

Oh, you should have tried. The worst that could have happened was someone giving you a puzzled look, and saying, "no, actually, broasted. Why do you ask?"

Yeah the UL president (wasn't that the president?) should take one of his own courses in public speaking. It was surprising how he saw all those people around and yet mumbled in a soft voice like he was at the opera so no one could hear. I was closer than you and couldn't understand him either. Oh well.

I also wish for anyone who heard what Brettly said during the bike ride to tell us. No one could hear him.

Weren't the butterflies cool? And last night I saw the news with shots of the monarchs on Mr. Tom and Charlie. WOW! Waaay cool :)

I was right behind Brettley, next to Mrs. Nancy. Are you talking about when we stopped directly behind his house?

I just watched the video of Mickey's tribute day...so moving. *tears*
Is the Ghost Bike Mickey's actual bike, does anybody know? It's haunting to think that it is. I hope everyone who passes it remembers to go forth with love and to watch out for one another.
I was also struck by how the bike was, literally, in someone's front yard. My heart aches to think about how close Mickey was to other people, potential help, when she was abducted.
I've never even been to LA, but Mickey's case has touched my heart so deeply. May she RIP and may God grant her family comfort and hope in their time of suffering.

IMHO The ghost bike is one of Mickey's but not the one she was riding that awful night. The bike Miss Nancy was riding was that bike. I cannot find where I read this but I think it was on this site.

That is what I recall as well.
