CA - ‘Uncharted territory’ as Lake Oroville rises toward damaged dam

I have lived in Sacramento my entire life and I have NEVER seen this much snow on our surrounding mountains.

They say since 1995. I remmber1995. July 4th weekend went to Zion Canyon in Utah, decided to take the long way through the Sierra. Tioga Pass through Yosemite was closed due to snow. Not that it snowed in July, just hadn't all melted yet. So we went108 through Sonora Pass. Snow along the side of road, river had snow and ice on it. Passed by Mammoth Mountain on 395. They were to hold a mountain bike event and didn't know what to do about all the snow covering the mountain. Coming home Tioga Pass had opened. Near the entrance there actually was a skier coming down the mountain (not the ski resort part of Yosemite, near Tioga Pass, unbelievable.) We stopped and watched and when he finished he came over to speak to us. He was a ranger patrolling in the back woods of the park, but had nothing to do because it was still covered in snow. Then in August we went up to Lassen Park. Couldn't get through the southern entrance because of snow, had to go to the north entrance. In August still lots of snow.

I believe 1995 was an El Nino year. 1994 was really dry, remember going to Lake Tahoe and the lake was really receded. Russian River hardly had any water. Then in 1995 both were full that summer.

Hi Jax!

Govt needs to step in -- Donald --- hey over here --hey on the West Coast--Donnie 200,000 of your voters need ya bud.

FIre someone else and send FEMA - you can do more than two things hey DOnald can you hear them? Don?

And my first thought , well above was my first , but second it is kinda taking for granted that there will be anything to return to .
Went to my magic page and instead of posting a stagnanat number - the 99000 out I just subtracted (rounding rounding!) the inflow from the steady outflow and for the last 12 readings (out-in) they averaged about 60000 an hour for the last 12 hour.

Hotels in that whole area need to IMO switch from making money to being human beings.

Real cost of running the joint total plus a dash for you and let them just pay that for the next half of month if they can. Or Donnie can you help on this end

During Katrina our hotels gave out vouchers - I volunteered for the Red Cross for that and what a mess that was -- I shall shut up about my experiences with the Red Cross.

200,000 were not planning for half a month vacation suddenly they need help.

Anyone know how to make a go fund me thing - trust me - you do not want me balancing any checkbooks!

I do wonder why they cant just use dump trucks and just dump in boulders instead of wrapping them up in pretty little white bags.

Has anyone seen any video of how many of them are in there yet??

My family has been in the Oroville area for close to 40 years. Family members work for Cal Fire and we have never seen it like this. There are many pages and groups on Facebook with updates. More importantly, it's getting to the point where they need help. Running out of gas, food, meds, supplies, trapped pets, etc.
If you are able to send in donations, supplies or share with others, I'm sure it would be appreciated.
Schools are closed thru at leastb next Tuesday so these people will likely be out at least that long. National guard has been called in and residents are notb ubeing allowed back into town. This is not an affluent community. I cannot imagine the financial impact and stress they are going thru. There are people literally staying in tents in campgrounds in the winter and more rain expected by Wed or Thurs.

A Temporary Flight Restriction has been enacted for the area of the Oroville Dam as crews conduct continual surveys. This restriction includes recreational drones.

http://www.water.ca.gov/news/newsreleases/2017/021317-am_factsheet.pdf

additional gates on the Sacramento River, bringing the total up to 46 of 48 gates opened. This will accommodate flows coming down the Sacramento River into the Yolo Bypass, allowing additional flows from the American River as releases from Folsom Lake are increased. Opening additional gates allows DWR to maintain a consistent level on the Sacramento River at the I Street gauge. Each gate allows 1,500 cubic feet per second of water to enter the Yolo Bypass from the Sacramento and American rivers. These flood releases relieve pressure on the Sacramento River and reduce the risk of urban flooding in Sacramento.

I had no idea California was gonna float away. I had heard that it was very wet . Why this whole mess isn't more on the news is bewildering

the Oroville Dam and surrounding infrastructure play a critical role in getting food to U.S. tables.

This ones a mess --its like the outflow is 8000 and inflow 30000. (the Pedro one)

Dam concerns reverberate

The state Department of Water Resources lists 35 dams in Calaveras County and 30 dams in Tuolumne County, and several of the largest are at capacity or nearing capacity in the midst of one of the Central Sierra’s wettest winters to date.

recent events show that things can still go wrong when extra runoff arrives and structural limits get tested.

Before noon Monday, staff with the National Weather Service in Sacramento issued a flash flood warning for potential imminent failure of the North Fork Mokelumne River levee, which could mean Tyler Island will be flooded as well as parts of east Walnut Grove.
