4 dead, suspect wounded after mass shooting in Orange

April 1, 2021

Investigators are expected to release new information Thursday on a shooting at a business park in the city of Orange Wednesday that left four people dead, including a child, and one person injured.

The gunman was also wounded after exchanging gunfire with officers and remained in critical condition at a local hospital.

The shooting was first reported around 5:25 p.m. Wednesday at 202 West Lincoln Ave., Orange police say. When officers showed up, the shooter was still firing, according to Lt. Jennifer Amat.

They exchanged gunfire and the suspect sustained a gunshot wound, then was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Police later clarified that it was undetermined if the suspect's gunshot wound came from the officers or was self-inflicted.

Police say the four people who were killed included one child. A woman was also seriously wounded by gunfire and transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

This is so sad and hits close to home. My heart goes out to the victims and their family .

“The preliminary motive is believed to be related to a business and personal relationship, which existed between the suspects, and all of the victims,” Amat said. “It appears all of the adults were connected either by business or a personal relationship, and this was not a random act of violence.””

How terrifying to read that the shooter used bicycle-type cable locks on two gates so that no one could get in or out through the courtyard area of the building. That shows planning, for sure.

When officers forced their way inside, they found a 9-year-old boy dead with a wounded woman who was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

“It appears that a little boy died in his mother’s arms, and she was trying to save him during this horrific massacre,” O.C. District Attorney Todd Spitzer said. Police later said the relationship between the woman and child is still being confirmed.

The gunman, identified as Aminadab Gaxiola Gonzalez, was also found wounded and taken into custody.

The victims were not named as officials work to notify their next of kin. They include one man, two women and the child, who was described as being the son of one of the victims who worked at the business.

Investigators recovered several items at the scene, including a semi-automatic handgun and a backpack containing pepper spray, handcuffs and ammunition, which they believe belonged to the suspect, Amat said.

“Mr. Gonzalez is eligible for the death penalty. This is a special circumstances case, there were multiple victims,” the District Attorney said. “And we are now presently looking at whether his locking of the front and back gates constituted a lying in wait, which would also be eligible for death.”

What in the world can drive someone to carry out something like this? Including a young child? Humans can be unfathomably scary.

Poor little one, I can't imagine.

Anyone who can do what Gonzalez did is not human.

The death penalty is entirely appropriate in this case, but he'll be an old man before his date with the needle finally arrives. Most probably he will die in prison of old age first.
This is California. Nobody gets executed here anymore.
It's very frustrating when the democratic process is ignored. The majority of Californians want the death penalty to be enforced, but the lawyers, ACLU, etc. gum up the works beyond repair.

There are men on death row who were sentenced in the late 1970's and early 1980's who are no closer to their execution date than when they arrived at San Quentin. Taxpayers have forked out millions for their endless appeals. It's an incredible scandal, but nothing is ever done to fix it. There was some kind of ballot initiative to try to reform the process and it passed, but it's unclear whether it will have a lasting effect.

It is outrageous that the Governor can just say, "I'm not going to enforce the law because I personally don't like it."

Police in the city of Orange called a news conference Wednesday to release footage related to the March shooting that killed four people, including a 9-year-old boy. An hour later, police spokeswoman Lt. Jennifer Amat reversed course, saying the district attorney was concerned it could jeopardize the case against the suspected shooter. Amat declined to answer questions about the decision.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer sent a letter earlier in the day asking police not to release the nine-minute video they had prepared, which included portions of 911 calls and footage in which gunshots are heard.

“While new laws require your department to release videos after the incident occurs, there are exceptions when there is an on-going criminal prosecution,” Spitzer wrote. “Releasing the video could have a negative impact on the prosecution of this case and the future decisions about this case.”

Prosecutors have charged Aminadab Gaxiola Gonzalez with four counts of murder. He was wounded in the rampage and has not been arraigned because of his condition, which Amat on Wednesday described as stable.

Suspect was shot in the head by police and is still unable to communicate. Sure, he's listed in "stable" condition but that simply means his vital signs are stable. Who knows what kind of brain damage he might have.

This could take a very long time to play out legally. I don't have access to the court records. The only site I know about requires a case number for access to the accused person's records.

He's not even listed in an inmate search because he's not yet in a county jail facility. I assume he's still in a hospital.
