Thank you all so much … so about 2:25am here tomorrow ….I had thought it may have been just a couple of hours away ….

Gosh, Police have given a lot of notice before the press conference…. Is that normal there??? Or should we expect the worse news possible?? (Like they have allowed time to contact family members etc??? )
Merced is a relatively small (~85,000 people) mostly farming town. I don't think they have much experience with this kind of thing so they are probably scrambling to hire media consultants and lawyers to guide them. Nothing wrong with that. I saw a couple of interviews with the county sherrif today and he did a good job.

I wouldn't say it's normal but I've seen it done before. It's always so difficult to wait.
I imagine there are times when LE wants to make sure that the loved ones are aware of the information they will be sharing in the PC rather than have family members hear it from the media.
True but the family is saying the SO is not sharing any information with them so I doubt that is the situation here.

Includes audio of sheriff.

NEW:
@MercedSheriff
says a weapon can be seen in the video as the two men with their hands in zip ties behind their backs are brought out of the building by the suspect. Video shows the suspect returning to put the woman and 8-month-old baby girl in a vehicle.
@ABC30

If he previously did this and the other person(s) was unharmed, maybe he dumped the family somewhere remote to give himself time to pull the money and get away. I can only guess he served some time for the last one and could explain not wanting to go back. Hopefully they will randomly show up to someone’s house any minute now.

Unfortunately, I think that's incredibly unlikely. Before attempting suicide, the sheriff said that the suspect remarked that “he did something very bad."

What's worse than kidnapping to a guy previously convicted of similar crimes?

Murdering a baby and her family.

I wish I could believe that. I want to believe that. But, the fact that he tried to kill himself makes me think that it is not likely that they will be found safe. I so want to be wrong, and I applaud your optimism.

I thought that there might be more than one person involved, but the sheriff's description of the video (in the Twitter link) makes it sound as if Salgado really did act alone. I suppose there is a slim chance that he might have delivered them to someone else, and that chance would probably be the only hope that they are still alive.

The long delay until the press conference also has me worried.

I've read several times in this thread that the suspect said "he did something bad," but I haven't been able to find the source for the comment. It is quite possible that I overlooked an interview with the sheriff. Do you recall the source?

In the sheriff's office update, they said "Prior to law enforcement involvement, Salgado attempted to take his own life." From that, I assumed that he hadn't spoken to LE, but that might have been a false assumption.

I got it from this tweet:

Clearly you are right. And I'm not very hopeful. But I hang on to the thread that he expressed remorse and tried to go out. This suggests to me that he may not be a killer and the very bad thing was to kidnap someone again. Probably wishful thinking.

I've followed countless cases where a kidnapper is arrested and the victim isn't found at the same time. Not once have I seen it end well (the last time was a couple weeks ago with Eliza Fletcher).

We'll have a better feel for things during the press conference tomorrow though.

He admitted to his own family that he was involved….

The sheriff's office said his own family contacted authorities reporting that Salgado had admitted to them he was involved with the kidnapping of the family.

Video report also on this page…

Family members told KXTV-TV that the family, which has a trucking company, was taken from an office that they had only opened about a week earlier.

Interesting:

The Merced County Sheriff's Office expects they will get a chance to talk to Salgado sometime before Wednesday morning.

Maybe his condition isn't as bad as we might think.
