Dated link from 2/12/19 -- refresher

The mother of one of Aranda’s friends said on Facebook that Aranda’s Snapchat stopped tracking her, and it was very out of character for Aranda to not communicate with her friends. “They are in contact constantly,” she said on Facebook. “This is totally out of character.” KCAL 9 reported that one of her friends saw on Snapchat that she was in the Riverdale area. When her friend asked her why she was in Riverdale, the location was turned off.

[..]

Deborah Horstkotte, Aranda’s aunt, told Heavy that Aranda’s parents’ rights were terminated a long time ago. Her grandparents, Carl and Jeannie Horstkotte, had fostered and then adopted Aranda and her siblings. Aranda has three siblings: Daniel, Landy, and Adrianna.

Daniel said Aranda’s the type of person who’s friends with everyone. She was graduating as a junior, he said, and is really smart. “She always made room for other people even though she was a really busy person in real life,” he said in an interview that you can watch above.

Court Update at 9:30 PM PST:

@Niner - take note no trial on Friday -- next trial date on Monday 8/12.

Also, I don't know why Gary's name suddenly populated today on the grid. I wondered if he violated parole or something but there's no new "offense date" so I guess we have to wait for MSM. Then again, I don't trust these dudes and I would not be surprised if Gary went underground trying to avoid testifying against Owen. MOO

More than five years after 16-year-old Moreno Valley resident Aranda Briones disappeared, a friend, Owen Skyler Shover, is on trial in Aug. 2024 and is accused of murdering her.

District Attorney Mike Hestrin, once one of his office’s top murder prosecutors, is personally prosecuting a case for only the second time since his election in 2015, spokeswoman Amy McKenzie said, taking the reins alongside Managing Deputy District Attorney Ivy Fitzpatrick.

Hestrin on Monday said he will explain his decision to take the case after the verdict is read. Briones’ aunt, 72-year-old Teri Garcia, said before court on Monday that Hestrin has not discussed with the family why the boss is standing before a judge and jury.

“I’m all for it,” Garcia said, “if he can get Aranda’s justice.”

The gallery Monday included newly minted attorneys in their first day on the job with the county.

Defense attorney Steve Allen contended in his opening statement that there is not sufficient evidence for jurors to link Shover to Briones’ disappearance and that there is no proof that she is dead.

The DA’s Office, in the court filing laying out its case, contends that the killing happened on Jan. 13, 2019, as a result of an incident 14 months earlier. Briones and Shover were among a group of Moreno Valley High students who gathered at a park after ditching classes. They ran when someone yelled “police.” Shover handed Briones a gun, and they both scattered. A deputy saw Briones toss the gun into a drainage culvert and detained her, the document says.

[..]

Finally, the motive -- as reported from the trial brief:

Owen Shover and Aranda both attended Moreno Valley High School in the fall of 2017 and shared mutual friends. On Nov 7, 2017, the friends ditched school, and gathered in Community Park where a school resource officer seeking truants spotted the teens.

Shover, in possession of a handgun, panicked and tossed it to Aranda-- yelling for her to "hide it." Frightened, Aranda tossed the gun into a drainage canal-- but not before being seen by the resource officer who collected the weapon. When called before school administrators, Aranda disclosed that Shover was the one with the gun who tossed it to her.

The matter came before the local school board in February 2018, and its members voted to expel Aranda and Shover from Moreno Valley High. She enrolled in a nearby continuation school, while Shover moved out of his mother’s Moreno Valley home and relocated to his father’s residence and enrolled in a continuation school in Hesperia. But he was incensed over being kicked out of Moreno Valley High and what he evidently perceived as Aranda’s betrayal of trust, according to the brief.

Reportedly, in the eyes of Shover, getting expelled from Monroe Valley HS was evidence of the betrayal of Aranda's trust, and this sealed her fate. Via social media, Investigators obtained evidence of Shover shopping for another weapon between Nov 2018 and January 2019. The defendant became meticulous in his plan to destroy Aranda:

On Jan. 12, 2019, Shover contacted Aranda via text, inviting her to join him the following day while he made drug deliveries and “robs drug dealers,” the brief alleged. She agreed to meet him at Bayside Park, and the two connected shortly before 5 p.m. on Jan 13, 2019... Aranda posted several pictures to social media accounts within an hour, showing her and Shover in his car, expressing elation to be with her “homie,” who was letting her do some of the driving, according to the brief...While en route, Shover contacted his brother via FB messenger, stating, “Be ready for tonight. Get shovels and lighter fluid ready,” according to the brief.

The defendant retrieved his brother (Gary Shover) from the mobile home park, and the two headed north into the San Bernardino Mountains via state Routes 138 and 18. Between 8:33 p.m. and 10:14 p.m. According to the prosecutor, the defendant allegedly shut off his cell phone, making its signal unreadable-- but it returned to life after he reached his father’s home (located at 16210 Grevillea St).

Trial Brief Details

Now that we finally have a glimpse of the details-- I'm anxious to learn of the search efforts in the San Bernardino Mountains. I just watched a YT (Profiling Evil) on the recovery of Dylan Rounds in the Utah desert and I'm saddened that more than five years has lapsed before we learned of these details.

Hello, but I think that this report is wrong. The San Bernardino Mountains are not north of Hesperia, but rather south, south east. The mountain ranges south of the location you provided are the Los Angeles National Forest and Mt. San Antonio.

They are more than likely referring to these mountain ranges and this specific area where the 138 and 18 meet.

I get what you're saying. The San Bernardino Mountains would be North of Moreno Valley but not North from the road markers (Hwy 18/138) cited in the Brief. Thanks for pointing that out. Also, I don't recall if Hwy 18/138 originated as a fuel stop or cell ping.

Through mobile phone tower “pings,” Moreno Valley’s Citywide Camera System and security cameras mounted outside area homes, the occupants of the Nissan were tracked around Box Springs Mountain for roughly 20 minutes. Court papers said the vehicle turned north toward San Bernardino shortly before 6 p.m., in the direction of a mobile home park.

While en route, Shover contacted his brother via FB messenger, stating, “Be ready for tonight. Get shovels and lighter fluid ready,” according to the brief.

Yeah, this is also very off. Based on the court tv YouTube clip. The prosecution opening statements point out a lot of more info in regards to their whereabouts. So let’s skip in the timeline to where OS picks up GS at the friend’s house off 19000 Danbury Ave address in Hesperia prior to heading out into the San Bernardino Mountains at Apprx 7:00pm.

So, 7:52pm both are captured on camera heading southbound on Lake Gregory before turning eastbound onto highway 18.

7:56pm they’re captured passing the original cottage restaurant on highway 18 continuing their eastbound direction.

At some point they make a u-turn and now head westbound on highway 18 and once again captured on the camera of the original cottage restaurant at 8:15pm.

And captured once again on Lake Gregory heading northbound at 8:24pm.

From there, they wouldn’t be on film until 10:14pm at the chervron station on 15933 Main St. in Hesperia.

So for almost two hours, they had time to get rid of the body. The question is where though and it would’ve had been somewhere a vehicle of that height can travel on unless they threw her over a rail.

Doing further research, updates to the locations mentioned in the previous post.
The Original Cottage Restaurant is permanently closed, for those following the case or trying to do some research it still comes up on google maps if you search for it within the region.

I am only adding this because I use this as reference point between that location and the chevron location at 15933 Main st. Hesperia, CA to give me an ideal point reference of travel.

I've also looked up the ride heights for Nissan Versa hatch back models to help me further narrow down what dirt trails would've been accessible by this vehicle along the routes indicated by google maps as the fastest way of travel. I've also consulted with various friends who are overlanders and off road enthusiast to make sure the Versa would be able to travel on these dirt roads and trails at low to moderate rate of speed.

Now trying to mount all my info and see if I can perform a process of elimination.

Also if anyone can get me the coordinates or draw on map to the point where this piece of evidence might be located, that be great. Mike Hestrin stated, "bailout meet at the PCT train tunnel"

If anyone can point out to where this train tunnel might be, that be great.

Not finding any articles for yesterday's trial...

I think this case will forever be a mystery for us, @Niner.

Clearly, there was national coverage when AB first disappeared, and then it was like Covid became the excuse for all including local MSM to give up on reporting about the prosecution of the two defendants! As it is, we really never learned what evidence or lack of evidence was presented against Gary Shover at the preliminary hearing that caused the State to drop his murder charge and replace it with the lesser accessory after the fact.

And just imagine that the elected DA, Mike Hestrin, comes out from behind his desk for only the 2nd time since being elected in 2015 to take the helm at trial to present the case and still no MSM want to attend AB's trial.

Respectfully, no cameras means no live reporting from your high tech tools but I find it profoundly sad that not a single journalist wanted to tell the story of what happened to this teen using a notepad and pencil.

I've also found myself wondering if there's something bigger going on that MSM is afraid of. For example, I wonder if murdering AB was actually a gang initiation for Owen ordered by somebody others fear.

What's happening to CA???

MOO

Abstract of Judgement, Prison Commitment -- what is it?

  • In the context of a criminal case, cases such as this one form California, explain that the abstract of judgement is "a contemporaneous, statutorily sanctioned, officially prepared clerical record of the conviction and sentence.” It informs prison officials about the conviction and provides authority for carrying the judgment and sentence into effect.

Sounds to me like he was found guilty yesterday by the jury - !!

And I am with you on finding no articles... no idea why no one is covering this trial. :(
