The preliminary hearing for Lampley and his co-defendants is scheduled to begin May 9 before Judge Kelly Simmons. The preliminary hearing is expected to last about two weeks.

Simmons denied news cameras at earlier hearings but has said she is inclined to allow them at the preliminary hearing.

As if murder trials aren’t salacious enough, legal maneuverings are turning one local case into a First Amendment skirmish.

The preliminary hearing for three suspects in two murders is scheduled to begin May 9 and defense lawyers are trying to restrict media coverage. Duffy Carolan — an attorney who specializes in such cases and who represents two media clients — is fighting back with her own motions.

“All court proceedings should be open to the public,” she said, adding that the First Amendment promises public access to most preliminary hearings.

Sean Angold, one of three defendants charged with homicides in Fairfax and San Francisco last year, took a plea deal Monday for a second-degree murder conviction.

Angold, 24, agreed to testify for the prosecution against his codefendants, Morrison Lampley and Lila Alligood. Under the plea deal, Angold accepted a prison sentence of 15 years to life...

The early guilty plea could force a delay in the preliminary hearing, which is scheduled to begin next week in Marin Superior Court.

In light of Angold’s plea, the preliminary hearing was set to be delayed, but Carter was called to the stand Monday to accommodate her travel schedule.

The three killers of a Canadian tourist and a yoga teacher were told point blank exactly what they are: “unspeakable monsters.”

She trusted you, you three unspeakable monsters,” said Isabelle Tremblay, Carey’s mother, in a statement read by a prosecutor. “And you stole her from me. You are proof that evil exists.”
