A reminder to new members.

If you post something as fact you must post a link.

Yes, and even public facts about victims are off limits. RT is still considered a victim and can’t be sleuthed.

The "victim friendly" rule extends to the family members of victims and suspects. Sleuthing family members, friends, and others who have not been designated as suspects is not allowed. Don't make random accusations, suggest their involvement, nor bash and attack them. Posting their personal information, including names, addresses, and background data -- even if it is public -- is not allowed. That does not mean, however, that statements made by family members and other third parties cannot come into discussion as the facts of the case are reported in the media.

Statement to Media by the Family of Barbara Thomas Aug 30, 2019

The Hong Kong based family of Barbara Thomas would like to issue the following statement: On July 12th, 2019, Barbara Thomas was reported to police as missing. Following a walk in the Mojave desert with her husband Robert Thomas, 69 year old Barbara vanished without a trace. Barbara is a mother of one son, and has two young grandchildren, as well as her puppy Lexi. On July 16th Barbara’s brother, sister in-law, two nephews, and niece in Hong Kong were informed of her disappearance.

At this time we are working with case detectives to locate Barbara, though they report they cannot release any information to us or the public, as the investigation is ongoing.

Barbara and her husband were avid and regular desert explorers, and the chances she became lost or disoriented in the five minutes between her husband reporting last seeing her, and him realising she was missing, are highly improbable. Though police do not suspect she was abducted, husband Robert does. An exhaustive nine day search in blistering Mojave heat, including Search and Rescue specialists, search dogs and helicopters, turned up no sign of her.

Barbara was scheduled to visit her ailing brother in Hong Kong, arriving on July 23rd. Her family here are devastated at her disappearance, and especially the lack of any new information regarding the investigation. Her brother, who has been in hospital, is extremely distressed at the unbelievable nature of her disappearance.

We would like to express extreme gratitude to multiple online communities of amateur detectives who have been instrumental in helping us better understand the nature of this disappearance. Despite long stretches of media and law enforcement silence, those dedicated groups of complete strangers have been keeping Barbara’s story and our hopes alive. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to all Search and Rescue members who offered their time to look for Barbara under such difficult conditions.

Barbara does not have a history of any illness that we know of. We have no reason to believe Barbara would walk away from her husband, or disappear in the manner she has. Especially not so near to a trip to Hong Kong to visit her younger brother in hospital.

We appeal to the public to please take a look at the pictures of Barbara included. If you have seen Barbara, or know ANYTHING which could help us find her, please contact San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office, Special Investigations Division, Homicide Detail, Detective Nicholas Clark at 909-387-3572, or the anonymous we-tip hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME.

To Barbara, we love you and will never give up in searching to find you. There are hundreds of people actively working to help us. We miss you dearly and remain hopeful you will be found soon.

This statement hits the nail on the head.

I hope media outlets pick up on this, if only to turn up the heat, and keep Barb’s disappearance in the news.

Time has passed, and the public has likely let this slip from their minds.

That can’t happen.

Perfect!

Shouldn't that have been for her to decide? Her brother's health was very uncertain at the time. JMO
Flights can be rebooked. I just don't see anything suspicious in cancelling the bookings, and I believe most people would do the same in those circumstances. It may not even have been his idea; someone else might have given him a nudge.

Is “prime suspect” = person of interest?

Missing Hiker's Husband Says Police Are Eyeing Him As Suspect
He said authorities have told him the polygraph test he took showed deception, however, he claimed he had not had any sleep before he took the test.

I can understand that. If someone I loved had gone missing while we were out and about and I didn't know what happened, I would not be able to sleep or sleep well at all, maybe for days at a time. But, also this:

If I were administered a polygraph test, and LE were to tell me the test showed I was being "deceptive" and I then were to participate and be interviewed for a news story I would be adamant in my response: 'I was not being deceptive; I answered all questions truthfully and gave law enforcement all the information and knowledge I had'. I would not proclaim 'lack of sleep' was why I was being 'deceptive' and leave it at that.

If that were me.

This is very clear and straightforward; perfect statement to get out to the public @dbdb11 and family. Your message to Barbara at the end is touching and heartbreaking. May she be found soon.

@dbdb11, this is an excellent statement. Is your family posting it anywhere along with contact info, or should we just include it in emails to media people? It looks like y'all will be including pictures of Barbara when you email this to media people. Maybe this can be the centerpiece of a small media package that others of us could send or link to? In the meantime, would it be okay if we linked to the post on Websleuths quoted here and say that you're Barbara's nephew?

(I realize that many here, using resources from @PommyMommy and others, have created and sent out media packages of their own about Barbara!)

ETA: In a comment on the HLN piece, I linked to your post.

You can see the parking area in the MSM video PommyMommy posted above when they do a satellite zoom in to the location RT said she went missing.

At approximately the 3:52 mark, HLN zooms in on a satellite picture showing the intersection of Kelbaker and Kelso Dunes Road. That's almost 8 miles north of the Kelbaker/Hidden Hill intersection where RT & BT's walk was said to have begun and where the search was ultimately centered. I don't know why HLN did that -- my guess is that was just an error.

CA - CA - Barbara Thomas, 69, from Bullhead City AZ, disappeared in Mojave desert, 12 July 2019 #8

HLN's Kelbaker/Hidden Hill satellite picture including the facility noted by @10ofRods and discussed by myself and others. It is not a parking lot, but rather a cleared area containing buildings, pipes, and some blacktop driveways. Here's a screenshot: Screen Shot 2019-08-30 at 10.25.42 AM.png

Thanks. We were posting at the same time -- please see the post before yours. That appears to be an error on the part of HLN. It isn't where RT said she went missing, nor is it a parking area. JMO

Is there any chance that Barbara has disappeared by choice?
I don't know if this was discussed earlier.
Having been near that area once, it is so desolate. Nothing but sand and scrub brush, as far as the eye can see.

Yes, except that they zero in on the Google marker for Kelbaker Road (which is about 8 miles north of where Barbara is said to have gone missing).

I think WSleuths on this forum have narrowed the "parking lot" down to one of two places just north and just south of Kelbaker/Hidden Hills.

It's strange to me that RT implies abduction and points to those cars as suspicious (so...total stranger abduction, probably by nefarious locals or Vegas-bound hoodlums) and another member of Barbara's family has a different abduction theory (at least seems to be working on that in his notebook as seen in his interview).

Both theories require amazing timing such that RT does not see or hear it happen. In both theories, no one could have predicted when Barbara would emerge onto the road by herself and precisely at that time. If she was being watched from down the road, the watchers wouldn't have seen her until she was near the road.

Since RT says they captured a picture earlier (an hour earlier?), that's a long time for people to sit by the side of the road waiting for an opportunity to kidnap someone.
