So the crew members were awake. Maybe I wrong above and someone was starting breakfast at that time? What roles would the crew do awake so early? Does someone have to be awake during the night on a chartered trip like this? Do they sleep during the day?

I'm not thinking it had anything to do with the kitchen. Maybe, but it's being reported that the crew who jumped off were on the bridge of the boat. MOO

Yes. It's my hunch is they were on the deck doing whatever and something happened below deck that was sudden and so fast and strong that it was beyond them being able to help the passengers. They survived because they could jump overboard.

At least 30 people feared dead on burning boat off California coast

33 passengers vs 34 clear-up, possibly. Amazing photo with this link off the fire.

It is believed that five crew members were on deck when the fire started and were able to get off the boat. However, all 33 passengers were below deck and become trapped. It was earlier reported that 34 people were missing but this was revised when it was found that a crew member who was on the manifest was not actually on the boat

Not cool that a ship manifest isn't right. I know that happens, but in an emergency, it can cause big problems. Glad this was figured out.

There was an interview with someone who knew a survivor, and his statement was that there was an explosion whose force blew them off the ship. He did not say anything about jumping, so we'll have to wait to learn what really happened until there's further confirmation. That makes more sense to me than all the crew just abandoned ship and saved themselves, leaving all the passengers onboard to fend for themselves. Seems like there would be some effort to make sure there was no possibility of rescue or assistance before jumping.

I think the only thing that saved them was being up top, and perhaps getting thrown from the ship. It wouldn't surprise me if those below died instantaneously, and the whole boat was basically engulfed from a sudden explosion, and if the crew hadn't been thrown from the deck, they too would be dead.

All speculation on my part, but when they only mentioned the crew being found initially, I had a bad feeling, and it's probably true. Nobody else survived.

"I can't breathe," one passenger aboard a boat engulfed in flames near Santa Cruz Island, California, Monday morning said while making a mayday call.
'I can't breathe': 4 bodies recovered, 29 people missing after boat fire
Daily Mail has an update saying that it was the Captain who made the call, and it was made while he was in the water.

In a chilling recording of the mayday call, the Conception captain can be heard telling a Coast Guard dispatcher that all of his passengers are trapped below deck 'with no escape hatch'.

'There's 33 people on board the vessel on fire. They can't get off,' the captain says.

The dispatcher responds: 'Roger. Are they locked inside the boat? Roger. Can you get back on board and unlock the doors so they can get off? Roger. You don't have any firefighter gear at all, no fire extinguishers or anything?'

Most of the captain's responses are unintelligible, except for the words: 'I can't breathe.'

From the early news articles, I noticed this comment:

He said: "It keeps being extinguished and re-flashing, possibly due to the amount of fuel on board. Unsure why, but it's consistently being put out and re-flashing."

Oxygen cylinders exploding could have caused that. Larger boats have caught fire, with bigger fuel tanks. Fuel usually burns out or leaves a large slick around the wreck.

I wonder if they had injuries leading to drowning, or maybe the fire was above them blocking escape when the burning boat started taking on water... one could assume they are all excellent swimmers, although hypothermia in sea water is a problem year round. :(

The FBI was assisting with the investigation into the deadly fire, CBS News chief Justice and Homeland Security correspondent Jeff Pegues reports. The bureau has an underwater search and evidence recovery team available to authorities

Just coincidences, but FBI at Santa Barbara and FBI at Odessa/Midland reminded me of Reagan/Bush.

George HW Bush family lived in a tiny apartment in Odessa with toddler George W, before purchasing their home in Midland's Ohio Avenue.

The specs on their website say 1600 gallons of fuel. It would think it would be diesel. But they were scheduled to return from the islands to Santa Barbara this afternoon, end of trip, so most of the fuel would already have been spent getting to the islands and puttering around the islands.

They seem to have cut off access to the specs on their website, but I remember reading the 1600 gallons earlier this morning.
