Does anyone think that the reason no reward has been offered in this case is that LE and the victims' families believe that LE is on the trail of someone whom they are pretty sure was responsible for this horrendous crime?

Apparently the name of the owner -- or location -- of the boat that was searched has not been released.

Any ideas?

I appreciate recent posters returning this case to a more prominent place in the Forum line-up!

The Ventura County Star is reporting another stabbing -- this one of a 61-year-old woman, who lived with her aged parents. No one heard or saw anything since she was seen the night before (I believe it was Monday or Tuesday night, but no hour given) and then her parents tried to look into her room about 3 p.m. the next day and the door was locked from the inside. As I understand it, the Ventura PD has called in the LE agency/ies investigating the Faria Beach murders.

Also, there is a comment on the Ventura County Star.com article about this latest crime by a poster who says the Husteds owned a second home not too far from the site of the latest crime....that is new information, I believe.

Even gated communities that don't have beach access are easy to get into. IMHO, the 'gates' give people a false sense of security. Most of those gates can be climbed by just about anyone.

Athough we didn't live in a gated community ourselves at the beach, many of our children's friends did. It's not that hard to get in. You just wait for another 'authorized' vehicle to enter and follow behind them. ;)

Oh........also, anyone or type of business that needs to enter the gated community for business, ie mailman, UPS, FedEX, real estate person, pizza delivery, etc., etc., etc., quite often knows a code to enter.

I agree with you completely Fran. Can't figure why people pay all this money to live in a "secure" community, when there is really no such thing

My grown son used to be a security guard at a gate of a gated community in the Detroit area and on one of his nights off (this was about five years ago) one of his co workers was working and at the gate, they basically check to see if people coming in are residents or have permission of residents (they called to check). One night a woman let her boyfriend in, who in turn killed her in a domestic abuse case, and the gated community got rid of the contract for my son's security company because of this. It was so stupid. The woman let the guy in. There is no way the security guards were responsible!!!

And then there was a case in Phoenix in 2006, where a guy got into a gated community and killed a whole family, including children. It turned out to be a guy who wanted to silence an employee of his in an upcoming fraud case, so he killed the whole family. I think his name was William Miller (the suspect) and I am not sure whether he was convicted or not yet.

Thanks for the link Track ... SCARY! LE delays release of any info for over 20 hours and calls in VCSO to look at their crime scene?! Sounds like they immediately saw something in that bedroom that make them feel the two cases may be linked.

Few interesting details;
Sailor Ave. is in the Ventura Keys less than 400 feet from the H's neighborhood.
The H's own a rental in that area.
The bedroom door was locked from the inside.

If there is no personal connection, there is at least a geographic one. LE is not releasing any details, i.e., evidence of forced entry, weapon left behind, whether the parents were gone during the day, etc. The body was discovered around 3:00 pm when the parents tried to open the door to check on her and discovered it was locked. Next door neighbor said the family had dogs that barked at everything. He did not hear any barking or anything unusual. Possible SK in the area?

Does anyone know how to do an APN search by street only? Would that yield the name of property owners? Curious to see if this was the H's rental.

yes I can do that. I will see what I can find out without revealing any private information.

ETA: I looked it up, the Husted rental is on another street. The murdered woman's parents are the owners on title of the home she was killed in.
The 2 houses are .78 miles apart. That is driving distance. As the crow flies they are actually much closer maybe about .2 of a mile apart or less.

This second stabbing is scary......

The news just said that there was more than one entrance to her bedroom.

She was an energetic woman who worked as some sort of counselor. She moved in with her parents 10 years ago after a divorce.

The parents have caregivers that come to the home each day.

The way the perp acted - invided their home, stabbed to death two people, incl a pregnant woman in front of their son, I suggest the perp is mentally ill.
Hard to say whether the couple was targeted, but it's possible a hitman was hired by some business partner, a personal revenge, an angry employee..

But to me it looks like 'a crime of opportunity'..

There were obviously a lot of blood on the scene, the perp must have been covered with blood also..But no witnesses so far, who may have seen him, running away from the murder scene?

Hopefully the killer will be arrested soon.

At least this time they're not giving the neighbors a false sense of well being. Now they're telling them to keep their doors locked, per one article I read this a.m. It'll be interesting IF they're able to link these murders.

FWIW, nine miles of coastline separated these crimes. :(

Two weeks after a couple were stabbed to death in their beachfront home near Ventura, a 61-year-old woman was fatally stabbed at her home in an upscale waterfront neighborhood nine miles down the coast.

The body of Wendy DiRodio was found in her locked first-floor bedroom in Ventura Keys about 3 p.m. Wednesday. There was more than one entry into the room, said Sgt. Jack Richards, a spokesman for the Ventura Police Department. Richards would not elaborate.

These seem connected to me given the randomness, proximity of crimes, and method (i.e., stabbing) used by the criminal. I'm sure the PD is now checking out other nearby, unsolved stabbing crimes which occurred within the last year or two.

Today's on-line edition of the Ventura County Star -- www.venturacountystar.com -- has an article about the latest stabbing death in Ventura that says Ms. DiRodio, the victim, had just purchased a home in Santa Barbara, where much of her social activity took place.

Interestingly, the Husteds' business is in Santa Barbara, which may mean there could be a Santa Barbara connection between the two incidents. Also, it says she had been searching for a home (that would accommmodate her dogs) for some time...and I imagine the Husteds were also searching because their Faria Beach home is on the market.

JMO, of course.

This is pretty interesting, IMO. I keep thinking there may be a connection in the realtors they used. If both victims (the Husteds' and Ms. DiRodio) were using the same realtor to look for their homes, that could be a very good lead. If they weren't using the same- I know realtors often connect with each other, and that could be a lead as well.

I agree that there is a connection. I had the feeling from the beginning that this was a crime of opportunity. There's a nut on the loose. It's scary. But, LE at the beginning stated firmly that the incident with the neighbor of the Husteds who heard someone walking around his house, was not related and that it seemed the Husteds were targeted. This could have given people a false sense of security. I questioned whether they were trying to keep people from panicking, but if they had nothing to suggest this wasn't a random crime of opportunity, I feel LE did the public a disservice.

My heart goes out to the Husted children. Hoping they are with loving family and getting all the help they need to cope with this horrible tragedy. Praying that LE will arrest this murderer very soon. They must be very fearful that the perp is still at large.

I'm going to try to post a map showing the proximity between the two stabbings:

moz-screenshot-2.jpg

I'm not good at this. It's annoying!

Well, here's a link to an LA Times article about it with the map I'm trying to post. But, you have to click on the map in the article to see the distance between the two killings:

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-ventura-murders6-2009jun06,0,6909094.story

The article states that Wendy had a "new boyfriend," so I guess that probably brings into consideration the idea that someone might have been jealous/envious of her "moving on with her life," i.e., having a new boyfriend AND buying a new home in Goleta.

One more angle to consider in this already mysterious case.

Much abbreviated version of the post I lost earlier today. Initially I thought there may be a connection between this case and the H's. But after reading the article Track gave us the link to in VCS, not so sure. Too many other factors that could play in. She was a marriage/family therapist, maybe a client with mental issues? She was moving to SB, a "friend" who felt left behind? The "ex", she filed for divorce in 2002, finaled in 2006. Long time coming for a marriage with no children, maybe he did not agree with the division of assets? She was a sought after dance partner in the classes she loved to attend, maybe someone wanted more than a dance lesson?

One intriguing thought though ... One of the features she was looking for in the new SB home was a backyard for her two dogs. What if she had contacted the H's ironworks biz to discuss a WI gate or fence. Someone could have come out to view the location in order to make design specifications. Long shot at best, but that's what this is all about, possible theories.
