Numerous hearings have been held over the past year to set a trial date, but each time the proceedings have been pushed back. This past September, Judge Daniel Nishigaya granted another extension to Velasquez’s attorney but stated that a trial date should be set for some time in January.
Ultimately that date was pushed back yet again, with a new trial setting date now scheduled for Feb. 14.
If convicted on all charges, Velasquez faces the potential of life in prison.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is headed to trial. Velasquez is at the center of an attempted murder case heading to Santa Clara County (California) court on Sept. 9.

Judge Elizabeth C. Petersen ruled the scheduling at a trial setting on Wednesday, according to MMA Junkie. Velasquez and his attorney, Renee Hessling, were present at the hearing. Several timelines precede the trial date: a trial readiness hearing on June 26, motion filings must be filed by Aug. 12 and completed by Aug. 26, and witness lists must be submitted by Sept. 4.

Would-be ‘judge, jury, and executioner’ Cain Velasquez avoids trial, but retired UFC star still faces prison after hunting down accused child molester

Prosecutors in Santa Clara County, California, dubbed Cain Velasquez a would-be “judge, jury, and executioner” and said he still faces prison time after the retired UFC star pleaded no contest on Friday to attempted murder and other charges for engaging in a 100 mph pursuit and shooting at a truck in 2022 in search of the man accused of molesting his then 4-year-old son at a day care.

Velasquez, now 42, had faced possible mandatory life behind bars, albeit with potential parole, if he went forward with a September trial and ended up convicted in the case, but according the Mercury News, he has avoided both the trial and likely the theoretical worst case scenario given the plea, even though the judge will retain discretion under a negotiated disposition between the state and the defense over whether to dole out probation, a prison sentence, or life, whenever that sentencing proceeding occurs.
