I'll try to reply to everything once I'm home from the hospital later today.

In the mean time for those talking about cell towers, you need to look at more than just Valley Center - and include Hidden Meadows, Escondido, San Marcos, Fallbrook, Rincon, etc. as possible ones that would play in to things.

And I'm not sure how well marked some of the ones on places like the reservations (which there are many of in the relevant area) are marked - or if some of the funny private ones on other places are very public.

HTH for now!

Forager, I will be able to study your map in a couple hours and will see if I can get anything from it.

FindHG and Forager, THANK YOU for the maps and any future follow ups.

FindHG, when you mentioned pinging programmed parts, did you mean other than the GPS antenna? Like, motor parts?

If so, that's an extraordinary idea and could be used on so many cases like this.

GPS, if they were signed in, but especially the motor parts. Engine check programs the dealer would know right away one way or another.

We know the antenna is not getting picked up. This indicates it could be in a garage (some other casino garage?), removed, or buried (such as if the car was on its roof).

Other motor part pings is certainly worth looking in to. How do we relay that idea to the family/LE?

FindHG asked me to post a Google map with a few markers related to the Knutson search.

The map shows selected cell towers around the area of the Casino. One of the towers is labeled ""Last Ping" from this cell tower - the tower near the intersection of I15 and Deer Springs Rd.

Here's a screenshot of what the map looks like at the moment:

The map is set for anyone with the URL to open and edit it.

Forager as usual, your map is brilliant. Thank you. Here is my theory. I'm an amateur at this, so take it for what it's worth.

This couple started heading to their destination when one of them starting feeling very ill. They detoured to head in to Escondido to go to the hospital. That is a windy, dangerous road. I've been down it many times as I have friends in Valley Center. They did not call the son as not to worry him.
Whomever was driving had a medical emergency, or they attempted to aide the passenger. In doing so, they went over the road and will be found within range of the last ping.

There is a chance one could still be alive. I pray foiks are scouring the last ping area. My prayers for this couple.

This area has lots of horse people. It would be great to get people out on horseback in this area ASAP. I checked the weather, it's going to rain tomorrow. There is still 4 or so hours of sunlight. Hope people are out looking.

Editing to add, everyone should take their dogs too.

I have to run to the hospital for a bit shortly so this will have to be short.

Yes, yesterday I wrote quite a bit about why I thought they could go to Deer Springs instead.

Frankly I don't really see it as THAT out of the way, and I absolutely (and very strongly) think it's far, far, far more likely they did NOT intend to go the back way to La Quinta (again, no restroom stops possible for Dianna as has been said she needed, more desolate, a "harder" drive, etc)

I think it's far more likely they were going to take the major route - which really is NOT much longer because you can drive at freeway speeds, don't have the frequent issue of getting stuck behind a slow car on the winding one lane road, etc. - and were going to take 15 to 215 to 60 to 10 - especially since THOSE are the roads they'd know more from driving out their normally from home!

As far as pinging at Deer Springs instead of going north to Gopher Canyon, like I wrote in GREAT DETAIL yesterday, I am quite sure that much of coming down Lilac / Old Castle that you could ping the Deer Springs tower - and so if they went off the road coming down, that wouldn't surprise me.

There are other reasons Deer Springs wouldn't surprise me - YES it's 4.2 miles from the Old Castle Road they could have taken down from Valley View vs. .2 to Gopher Canyon - but there are many reasons they could have done that that I don't see as odd, especially since you can drive quite quickly on Champagne Blvd, so speed wise it wouldn't be very low and it's really only like 4 minutes from Old Castle to the Deer Springs entrance, it's not like a 10 mile detour that I think some are seeing it as.

Things like taking a different turn coming down from Valley Center Road (assuming they actually went left instead at the intersection where the white cars went right) is a very easy one, especially since there are SO many options from up at the top of the hill over to the freeway.

Deer Springs is also more of a "main" entrance/exit to 15 than Gopher Canyon is, in that it's the more main route to go to things like the Lawrence Welk Resort and other attractions over on that side of the freeway.

It's also got "services" at that exit, which many others don't on the ones immediately north of it.

That can be a HUGE thing and absolutely make it a more memorable exit than something else would be. And when you've got a couple who already spent 2+ hours in the car driving there, and then had another 2+ hour drive to the desert (with a lot of that also having stretches with minimal services) they might have known that was an easy gas option from passing it.

Like I said, many of the few options further north end up with huge delays getting off the freeway (the one at the south end of Temecula, and absolutely if you wait until you're nearer to Temecula proper, etc.) and without a doubt I'd stop at that Arco / AM/PM at Deer Springs if I needed gas or even a bathroom break.

More on Champagne in another post revisiting my highlights from when I wrote (and included pictures) about the specifics of the terrain and what they'd pass briefly before I go to the hospital, then I'm out of here for now.

Eyes on the ground can never be replaced. You must spend way too much time in a car, TravellingBug! I've added that alternative route you describe involving Old Castle Rd. Did I get it right?:

I also saw your post suggesting adding more cell tower locations, but I'm flinching at the prospect of copying all of those cell tower locations over to this map from the one that Steelman had posted earlier:

http://find.mapmuse.com/share/cell-tower-locations--valley-center-area

Let me know if you think it's important to.

I just wanted to mention that...my mom once locked her keys in her car. She called On Star to have them unlock the car. It was a cloudy day and they could not transmit to the car to do that because of interference.

Surely...their GPS provider is still currently trying to locate them periodically instead of just that one initial time???

Makes sense to me. You Californians talk roads the way some people talk football. I've added the route to Escondido to the map.

LOL!! I'm on the east coast and while it's fun to get a peek into the California driving culture, but I'm totally turned around on this thread! :)

Dang it. I feel the sands of the hour glass on this one. Anyone know what search efforts are going on? I really feel tremendous urgency on this one. Hope there are feet and hooves in action

It's storming pretty nasty in Nor Cal tonight. Black skies, thunder, lightening, wind, and c c c c cold. :(

Yes, I'm up here too. Saw lightening! Big deal for us. Woo hoo!

Drats -- The storm is south of me, heading to San Jose. Not a drop here; even partly sunny skies.

The storm according to the local TV stations is on its way to Southern California.

I would like the So Cal rain to wait until after we find these lovely people.

Maybe the rain is a godsend for them.

Praying real hard for them to be found safe.

Now I'm gonna catch up.
