They REALLY need a big push and search effort to get them found today!

Ignoring the fact that it's been several days and they were planning on a day trip, and ignoring they are diabetic and all that goes along with that (and it's not like they have a car stocked with a a bunch of Girl Scout cookies and some cheese puffs, etc. for a long drive like the two ladies missing in MI survived on when they were stuck in their car for 2 weeks!) we're about to get more bad weather.

It's been an odd last few weeks here and we're not only getting rain (that we've hardly had in ages) but the temperature is swinging from nearly summer-like temps to early spring-like temps all in a matter of days for almost a month.

And the temperatures have been quite cool with the rain (to the point that we got snow in the mountains last week, which is rare...and especially so in May!) and now they're saying more rain than they predicted and likely thunderstorms.

That's going to put a big damper on being able to search and it's likely to wash away evidence of a car possibly going off the road, as well :(

If not for LE refusing to release the video from the casino, my guess would be a car accident. But it sure is sounding like LE suspects foul play.

So do you think that means someone was in their car? Or how/where would it have happened?

I guess where I get hung up on that is it seems like they would change how they're searching or something if they saw someone on video in the car - and since they know what time they came and know he went and got the car, etc. - it seems almost certain they'd have seen someone get into the car since they presumably went back to look at any/all footage.

Or I'd think they would do that?

And if someone else was in the car and it's evident on casino footage, it seems like that'd necessitate something happening virtually immediately - meaning essentially in plain site of any casino traffic (which could have allowed them to signal for help or make a ruckus honking or something) since the cameras obviously only capture so far around the property.

Plus that almost necessitates TWO other people involved, no? Because if the person was in their car, how'd they dispose of both the car and them, all while getting themselves away from the scene?

Or are you thinking maybe they saw a car following them?

I could see them maybe not releasing that since they probably wouldn't be able to determine from the casino footage alone if another car just happened to be leaving at the same time going the same way. It's not like there are that many options initially leaving the casino, so it could be perfectly innocent and maybe they'd not want to release that until they knew more?

Short of running them off the road somehow it seems it'd be hard for someone to do something to them from another vehicle and it not be seen or them not have been found by now.

"San Diego County Sheriff’s Department May 12, 2015 Page 2"

"At this time, any surveillance video that has captured the couple leaving the casino will not be released to the public."

"A parallel investigation is ongoing and specific details cannot be discussed at this time."

This is from the Press Release, under Update:Missing Couple-Valley Center
http://apps.sdsheriff.net/press/default.aspx

This could have nothing to do with our missing couple. It's possible there was a crime or other incident at the casino and the video would show suspects for THAT incident, which might not have anything to do with the missing couple. It's possible LE doesn't want to release the video because they want to control THAT evidence, ykwim ??

At this point, I'm still leaning toward accident. I do hope they are found soon.

Hoping they are ok somewhere. I would hope if a person of interest was on the camera, LE has either tracked them down or would asked for help from the public. Maybe it will be release today, maybe another car followed them out... Possible flashed lights to pull over. From what I read from the kids, this couple would probably help anyone.

The gps tracker built onto the car... It was mentioned it could be removed. Would it have been visible from casino cameras that it was missing? If so, maybe neighbors would recall if they noticed it there, or missing, just to get an idea of when it was removed.

I'm curious why this thread doesn't have ACTIVE SEARCH on the title.

ACTIVE SEARCH is part of the pull-down menu when someone starts a thread. After a while, the OP cannot edit their post and you will need to alert a mod to update the title if need be.

As far as the GPS, I thought I read upthread that it doesn't work in multi-level car garages or if the antenna is missing, removed or damaged.

Right. So is it visible in the casino videos? Obviously we don't know, but if it's clearly missing it would be good to know when it became missing.

Would they help someone in distress on the roadside, maybe someone holding a gas can, or a hitchhiker?

Reading on the Hyundai page about the Blue Link thing built into Sonatas and a few others now, it appears it's subscription based (I believe OnStar is the same way?) and that it's technically installed on the car automatically.

There's a year free when you get a new Hyundai:

Complimentary for one year on most new Hyundai vehicles, this comprehensive safety and car care package offers peace of mind. In the event of an accident, no matter where you are, trained operators are standing by to provide assistance and emergency help.

It seems like unless you have an active subscription it doesn't transmit, so I'm wondering if they just never activated that feature and no one in the family knew either way?

https://www.hyundaiusa.com/bluelink/

I did some googling and there's apparently only one way to disable it completely and you'd have to know how to do that, and even still, unless you do something else after disabling it, it apparently can still have the data.

So it seems like it would NOT be something most people would randomly know and/or be able to do.

If they did have an active BlueLink subscription it seems like either the car is in a parking garage (as had been suggested as one possibly way it'd not transmit) or else crashed enough to disable it, but somehow not enough to set off the auto-alert thing for airbag deployment, would be far more likely than someone managing to know how to disable that exact feature in a car without it being pre-meditated.

After digging around on a number of places besides just the Blue Link and Hyundai sites, it seems far more likely to me that they didn't have an active subscription, but...that may just be my take :)

Knowing when the GPS tracker stopped sending signals in relation to when his phone stopped pinging is key in this search. None of us know that.

LE does know that. They also know which route they would have taken because his phone would have pinged along the entire distance.

I wish they would furnish that information publicly so the private sector could get out and do some searching on their own, I'm sure there are plenty of people that would volunteer to do just that.

The 2014 White Hyundai Sonata they’re driving is equipped with a tracking device but the company says they are getting no signal.

“They said as result of them not getting a reading the antenna has either been completely severed from the vehicle or buried in something like a parking garage,” Said Acosta.

This article leaves you with the impression that the company could have and should have been receiving a signal. Otherwise, I would have expected some sort of a clarification about whether they had a subscription or not.

Just throwing this out there-If their car went down a ravine and Dianna's cell was damaged, then 10 minutes later, Cecil cell stopped working, it could mean the car, IMO, the car was resting on a tree branch and the branch snapped causing the car to go further down the hill and Cecil phone to turn off.

Investigators with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, Orange County Sheriff's Department or Riverside County Sheriff's Department are helping in the search. Helicopter crews followed the roads that Knutson, 79 and Bedwell, 67 would have taken from the casino to their son's home in La Quinta.

Great, now go search along the roads you DON'T think they would have taken.......you know, a Sunday afternoon drive just to see what you can see..........you're unfamiliar with the road....you get yourself in a jam.

Family of girl murdered 50 years ago in 'most terrible crime in Indiana history' reliving the nightmare as her sister and her husband vanish after casino trip

The family of an Indiana girl who was brutally murdered after being tortured 50 years ago when she was just 16 is being forced to relive the nightmare as her sister has gone missing in California.
Sylvia Likens was found dead in Indianapolis on October 26, 1965, with massive brain swelling and hemorrhaging in what was called 'the most terrible crime ever committed in the state of Indiana.'

Now her sister Dianna Bedwell has vanished about five months before the anniversary of her death.

* Sylvia Likens was 16 when she was tortured and killed in Indianapolis
* Mother Gertrude Baniszewski did deed with daughter, son and other kids
* Carved 'I'm a prostitute and I'm proud of it!' on the young girl's stomach
* Dead body found in October 1965 with brain swelling and hemorrhaging
* Likens' sister Dianna Bedwell and her husband Cecil Knutson are missing
* Last seen in California leaving the Valley View Casino in Valley Center

Valley View Casino where couple last seen.

Interesting article with a detailed history about the death of her sister and the convictions of the people responsible.

Here is some background on Dianna's sister's murder:

Slyvia Likens was killed in October of 1965 after repeated abuse at the hands of her caretaker, Gertrude Baniszewski, some of Baniszewski's children and other neighborhood children.

Likens' father, impoverished and traveling to make a meager living for his family, placed the girl and her sister, Jenny, in the care of Baniszewski.

Likens' older sister, Dianna, was grown and married at the time. Her brothers, Danny and Bennie, lived with their grandparents.

A jury in May of 1966 found mother and daughter Gertrude and Paula Baniszewski guilty of first-degree murder and second-degree murder, respectively.

John Baniszewski, a son, was convicted of manslaughter, along with neighborhood boys Coy Hubbard and Richard Hobbs.

This could be true, that the parallel investigation has nothing to do with them, but yet, what kind of coincidences and bad luck keep occurring to them? There has been Lots, for sure!! From them not calling family, from them having their phones turned off at different times, from the GPS not working, from their route out of the casino, from the video not being released, etc.
IMOO.

If you do Lake Wolford Road, which is what the media has been saying they did, it'd be the turquoise route to Deer Springs Road - but there are many variations between the end of Lake Wolford Rd and actually getting to Deer Springs.

Like I said in another post, MOST people I know would NOT go the route on Old Castle b/c it's windier, narrower, and there tend to be issues because it's sort of a more local road and more something locals use.

I personally would also have done Lake Wolford - it's a bigger road through most of it, plus if they're known to make bathroom stops frequently (per their kids) it puts you on a route with many more stop options even just the bit to the freeway.

Also, I think if you put in "Deer Springs Road, San Marcos, CA" as the destination, vs. actually putting it as the freeway entrance, you get the route option of Lake Wolford - or at least that's what I got actually mapping to the 15 that way.

But as I've actually driven it, maybe it shows up that way from the one time I did map it? Now I just drive it.

Thank you for this map. Since they been there before I wonder if they went to pick up something for Mothers Day. There is a near by General store at 31034 Valley Center road then maybe they got gas and someone got into the car? Or they made a wrong turn leaving the store or gas station?
