Details of Disappearance
Schafer was last seen driving his grandmother's vehicle in El Cajon, California on August 6, 1997. He has never been heard from again.

On September 12, Schafer's grandmother's gray four-door 1989 Chevrolet Celebrity was found vandalized and parked on private property on the Sycuan Indian Reservation. The tribal member who owned the land where it was found has refused to cooperate with police in Schafer's case.

Schafer's disappearance may be drug-related. There have been allegations that he owed money and/or drugs to some Hispanic individuals in August 1997 and may have met with foul play. His case remains unsolved.

A cold case remains unsolved even after DNA links skeletal remains to a missing El Cajon man, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said Friday.

Fast-forward to 2012, skeletal remains were discovered in an area of Sloane Canyon in Alpine, the department explained. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office used familial DNA to identify the remains years later in 2022, linking them to Schafer.

With the cold case still unsolved, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is now asking for the public’s help. Anyone who may have information about Schafer and what may have happened to him is encouraged to call Detective Jessica Kuehn at (858) 285-6361.
