I would like to know the time that passed between ER sending the email the therapist opening the email, the mother reading the email, the father getting a call from the mother, and when the LE were called. IIRC the shooting was reported to have started/called in at 9:27.

Therapist had 24 hours to report per CA law. My guess it was considerably less time than 24 hours.

The LA Times spoke to a family friend who said Chin Rodger's therapist told her to check her email just after 9 p.m, "Have you gotten Elliot’s email? I think you should see it." After seeing the email, Rodger then "immediately checked Elliot’s YouTube channel, where he had posted bizarre videos about how alienated he felt, particularly from women" (transcript of the "Retribution" video) and called her ex-husband to alert him. The friend, Simon Astaire, told the Times that both Chin Rodger and Peter Rodger rushed to Isla Vista, with Chin Rodger "call[ing] either 911 or the sheriff directly, and arranged to meet with authorities when they arrived."

BBM - I sure hope the Rs did more than just set-up an appointment to see LE! I hope the Rs gave LE a sense of their suspicion/concern/fear about what their son intended to do - not that the LE would have had much, if any, time to do anything about it since it appears ER emailed the drivel doc minutes before leaving his apartment and probably after having already destroyed three innocents. JMO

At 9:17PM on May 23, Lichin Rodger, the mother of Elliot Rodger, received an email from her son with his manifesto, “My Twisted World.” This lead her to his extremely disturbing “Retribution” YouTube video. At that time, she called her estranged husband, Peter Rodger, then 911, and the two went searching for their son.

Here's one time:

9:17p Chin Rodger got the call from her son Elliot’s therapist at 9:17 p.m. Friday – 13 minutes before authorities say he opened fire outside a sorority house. "Have you gotten Elliot’s email?” he said. “I think you should see it.” http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-frantic-parents-isla-vista-shootings-20140525-story.html

9:17p Rodger’s mother, Lichin, who saw the e-mail at 9.17pm, immediately went to Rodger’s YouTube page ... saw her son’s latest video, called “Retribution,” ... called Rodger’s father, Peter, and said he had to watch the YouTube video ... Lichin Rodger called 911, and the parents set off for Santa Barbara from Los Angeles, ... http://www.news.com.au/world/inside...driveby-shooting/story-fndir2ev-1226930461475

I read his manifesto. He was a hateful person. He hated women and he hated sexually successfully men [modsnip].

Nail meet hammer on all points.

He apparently hated any perceived or real form of rejection. He seemed to loathe and pity himself almost like he somehow thinks he received the wrong body. He believed everyone else is the cause of his problems or that he is just an unrecognized mythological God that is "owed" worship by his mere mortal subjects, etc.

I find it manufactured self pity that even with money, and living in Cali that he's whining about the fact he couldn't get laid? I don't think that's even a believable possibility.

It doesn't sound that he actually approached women. He expected them to fawn over him. And not just any women, but tall gorgeous blondes. For whatever reason, that method didn't work. Go figure.

They thought he might take his own life, thought he was vulnerable...and left him at college. Sorry but that is revolting, to me. My child would be home and under my supervision, if I had such thoughts. They were providing his rent and expenses...it could have been done. IMO

Mr. Rodger's parents "thought that he was vulnerable and that he might take his life or hurt himself, but not that he would hurt others," said Simon Astaire, a writer and family friend. "They are so unbearably, deeply in grief." Mr. Rodger's family couldn't be reached for comment, but a family lawyer and other family friends said Mr. Astaire had been appointed to speak for the family.

That's kind of unrealistic, because a large part of the population has depression and suicidal thoughts. You are suggesting that all these young people should be sitting at home under strict supervision? And never mind that Adam Lanza was sitting at home-that didn't stop him.

I don't find it unrealistic whatsoever. Look at the alternative.

I think this one was dealing with more than just depression and suicidal thoughts.

And, YES, this one should have been under close supervision. JMO, and yes hind-sight is 20/20 but I believe his parents and therapist/s had a pretty strong fear of what this one could have been capable of. All JMO.

So you think if the guy like this is sitting in his parents basement, he won't go out and kill people? Somebody forgot to tell Adam Lanza.

Someone forgot to get AL's mother's head on straight! JMO

Oh Absolutely I believe this to be true, they knew. jmo

I didn't say that. I said I would not leave my suicidal child at college, I'd bring him home and call everyone I could for help, while providing love and support. Seems pretty simple to me.

ETA: And he may still kill people or himself...but I would have done EVERYTHING I could to prevent it....and bringing him home is a start.

Once they are an adult, you can not force them to come home, for one thing.

He hated Asians, but he was an Asian.

Thank goodness he didn't get a girlfriend. He wouldn't stand a breakup.
If I were to take my son on the red carpet, I'd get him a suit to wear. Father and stepm were dolled up.
Such a horrid ending.

People with Aspergers are as different as any people are.

One of the characteristics is intense focus on things of interest. Temple Grandin used her focus in positive ways.

His focus was on his needs. Focusing on blonde can be just as much of a focus as focusing on vacuum cleaners. He did not have the capability to understand about people, so he extrapolated what he thought people were about. Dating and sex. It is to him a focus just like a vacuum cleaner may be to someone else.

Why does someone focus on a vacuum cleaner as opposed to something else? His focus was all about him. He had no boundaries on his focus because people are just things

Well, I think she's saying they could've forced him because they paid for everything and he had no means of supporting himself.

But honestly, I don't think anything about this was simple. Being a parent is hard sometimes with a mentally healthy kid. I can't imagine if my son was so disturbed that I had him in therapy by age 8. That would be devestating. I think they probably did their best over the years. Even though it was fairly obvious he was never going to be right, it would be hard to give up that hope as a parent. Plus he was most likely a master of manipulation when it came to his parents, even if he couldn't figure out the rest of the "human species", he had them pegged.

To be honest, I believe that if he were staying at home, the only thing it would change that his parent would be the first to go. Just like Adam Lanza's mother.
