“Yeah, that was a false story. Because I wasn’t – it was a lie about checking in on Karlie. Because it was in the beginning, and I didn’t know what to say and – I shouldn’t have even done the interview.” ~ Melissa Guse

Even had I not been immersed in this case, that quote alone would've sent up a major red flag.
The truth isn't confusing and certainly doesn't make you lie.

Translation- as time went on I became better at subterfuge and untruths. In the beginning I wasn't as skilled.

There are very few people I have a visceral reaction too. She is one of them. Poor Karlie :(

Karlie, circa 2018; Age-progression to age 20 (circa 2022)

Details of Disappearance

Karlie was last seen walking towards Highway 6 after leaving her residence in the White Mountain Estates area of Chalfant, California on October 13, 2018. Her stepmother saw her lying awake at 5:48 a.m., and went to sleep in the same room. Between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m., she woke up, and realized Karlie was gone.

There were no indications of forced entry to the home. She left all her belongings behind, including her cellular phone, eyeglasses and money. Witnesses saw her walking down the road towards U.S. 6, and a passing motorist saw her at the intersection. This is the last sighting of her; she has never been heard from again.

The night before her disappearance, Karlie came home after an evening out with friends and admitted to her parents that she had smoked marijuana. She seemed anxious and paranoid, and in her final text to her boyfriend she said the marijuana had been laced. It's possible she was still disoriented from the effects of the drug at the time she went missing.

Karlie and her father and stepmother had only recently moved to Chalfant, and she has relatives in Yerington, Nevada, 160 miles away. Her biological mother fears she may have had an overdose on the night of her disappearance, while her stepmother says she thinks Karlie was abducted.

Her case is being investigated as a simple missing person due to lack of evidence of a crime.

I saw something about this yesterday
idk...looks like she was served laced drugs..her bf might be involved in this.. he is just a kid with something weird going on..sure deception is present in this case but idk if it amounts to foul play
after that.. it could be anything...it depends on how reliable those alleged sightings are ...so no CCTV caught her ?
again why kids this young cant be aware of drugs dangers

After multiple years removed from posting in Karlie's thread and reviewing everything related to this case, I still can't come up with any other solution than Karlie left on her own and the most likely scenario is given where her stepmother and father lived is she walked off the beaten path not wanting to be seen by her stepmom.

At that point, she likely got lost trying to find her next destination or return home and had no phone or means to communicate with anyone and IMO it's probable she succumbed to the elements and/or starvation. I have never believed she was abducted, nor do I believe the stepmother harmed her.

Sadly and tragically, I think Karlie was scared and still under the influence of whatever drugs she consumed the previous night at the party - which I think included something much more than just marijuana/THC. Maybe she knew that, maybe she didn't but she consumed it and was dealing with the coming down/after effects.

I think in her inebriated state, she thought she'd be in huge trouble and tried to run away. Perhaps she was trying to 'scare' her stepmom and father so they wouldn't discipline her as much. Or perhaps her logical brain just wasn't working properly because of the drugs. In any event, I think she wandered off voluntarily and got lost. Most tragically, I don't think this is one that will ever be solved. :(

I agree with this but I do think it can be solved if her body is found and cause of death is determined.

Most definitely and I hope that happens. My concern is if she did wander off and got lost and succumbed to the elements, there might not be much, if anything left to find. It's morbid but happens frequently when for example hikers get lost.

On the day Karlie vanished, the temperature near where she lived got up into the mid-60's during the day, however at night dipped down near freezing. When you take into account it's a vast desert like area and little place to find shelter, winds and any other elements would've hit a teenager wearing no protective clothing hard.

If that's what happened to Karlie, then it's highly likely she wouldn't have lasted long - probably a few days to a week.

Gusé is now out of jail after posting a $50,000 bond. After posting the arrest details on February 12, the arrest record and mugshot were removed from the sheriff’s office website.

I remember this case and I remember Karlie's bio mom's theory that Karlie may have died that morning of an overdose.
But now that I'm seeing her father has a record of violence, is it possible that Karlie was punished for doing drugs and it went too far?

IMO, one of the reasons that KG was refused medical care by her parents was because there was permissive drug use in her home and as I recall, SM thought it silly to go to ER for tripping on weed. So no, I don't think KG was being punished for doing drugs. I think it more likely she walked out to remove herself from the violence happening inside between the adults. Maybe somebody wanted to silence KG.... MOO

While some reports cite KG was attending Bishop HS, I recall when the story first broke that KG was attending an alternate school due to a zero tolerance program at Bishop for drug use (smoking weed in the bathroom). The alternate school story soon disappeared but I see a missing person site is reporting as we first learned:

Karlie had been experiencing problems prior to disappearing. Her father and stepmother acknowledged Karlie’s history of experimenting with drugs and attending alternative education in order to improve her grades. Despite these factors, there appeared to be nothing that would have prompted Karlie to leave the house that morning. Investigators, both in law enforcement and independent firms continue to search for Karlie, while her father, stepmother, biological mother, and the rest of her family wait anxiously for Karlie to come home.

Missing since 2018, this case has always been painful to visit-- especially because I believe KG would still be here today -- an adult thriving in her artful world had she received medical attention on the evening she called for a ride home. KG knew she was not right and nobody listened. And in the event KG walked out of the family home sometime after 7 AM on 10/13/18, she was very vulnerable. :(

As adults and parents, we have a responsibility to do better when we know better. If one child is saved by learning from the mistakes made here, that will be something to celebrate. MOO
