‘Somebody knows’: New call for witnesses in case of missing Covelo woman

Kendall said there are too many conflicts in first and second statements taken by detectives for everyone to be telling the whole truth. The remote community of Covelo, population 1,140, is the kind of place where family relationships are complex and intertwined, and secrets hard to keep.

Kendall said he believes there are people who are covering for whoever is responsible and who may be afraid to come forward. He suspects there are accessories, as well.

“Here’s the thing. We know that there are people who know what happened, and I’m certain that with the correct enticement, they will tell us,” Kendall said in an interview.

“Everybody has different things that drive them,” he said. “Some people, it’s money. Some people, it’s just the goodness of their heart. We just need to keep reaching out.”

Khadijah Britton, 23, a Round Valley tribal member, was last seen at a residence in Covelo, California, on Friday, February 8, 2018, when witnesses say she was abducted and forced into a car at gunpoint by her ex-boyfriend, Negie Fallis.

Fallis has never been formally charged in connection to Khadijah’s disappearance, but Mendocino County Sheriff Matthew Randall says he is considered a person of interest. He is currently serving time at a state prison on unrelated charges.

In February 2021, Mendocino County Sheriff Matthew Kendall, along with the San Francisco Division of the FBI announced a renewed effort to seek information from the public. A reward of $120,000 is being offered for information that leads to Khadijah’s whereabouts.

Khadijah’s grandfather, Ronnie Hostler, is 79 years old and continues to search for her as he pleads with the public to come forward, hoping to one day bring peace and closure to their family.

Anyone with information about Khadijah’s whereabouts is urged to call the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office at 707-234-2100.

Round Valley and its people share a history marked by hardship. The ubiquity of historical trauma and the hard living of Indian Country forges a people gifted at finding the grace in darkness, the laughter in tough times.

Almost two years ago, on July 18, 2020, an unknown arsonist lit a fire in downtown Covelo that spread through the historic downtown and left three buildings destroyed. In Round Valley fashion, residents found ways to rise from the ashes. One of the businesses has reopened in another location. .

Most recently, Shane Grammar, a world-renowned muralist and advocate for Missing and Murdered Indigenous women, partnered with community members to paint a mural of Round Valley’s very own Khadijah Britton, missing since February 8, 2018. Grammar would install the mural on the smoke-stained walls of the former Round Valley Center for the Arts that was destroyed in the arson fire.

Khadijah graduated Round Valley High School in 2012, which was no small feat. The reservation suffered from a statistically low graduation rate, but Khadijah defied the odds and had hopes of going to college and pursuing a sports-related career. Her family was sure she could do it. However, after graduation, Khadijah's life took a turn and she started partying, using drugs on a regular basis, and spending time with people older than her.

One such person was Negie Fallis, a convicted felon, who Khadijah Britton met and started dating shortly after graduating. He had a long record of domestic violence, a kidnapping, and drug-related charges. Over the years leading up to her disappearance, Khadijah and Negie's relationship grew increasingly violent and abusive, though at first, Khadijah assured her mom that he didn’t hit her. This all changed on January 29, 2018, when Negie violently assaulted Khadijah with a hammer. Khadijah dropped the charges 10 days later on February 7. On February 10, when her family members hadn't heard from Khadijah for a few days, they filed a missing persons report to the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office.

During their investigation, a witness told officers that on the night of February 7, 2018, Khadijah was kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend, Negie Fallis, and his accomplice, Antonia Bautista Dalson. According to this same witness, Fallis drove to the house where Khadijah was, and demanded that she get into his black Mercedes sedan while holding a gun to her head and assaulting her. He and his accomplice, were both apprehended after this incident, but nobody has seen or heard from Khadijah since this night. Law enforcement did not have enough evidence to charge Fallis, though they believe he is responsible for endangering Khadijah.

Her family believes people know more about what happened, but are afraid to come forward for fear of retribution from within the Round Valley Tribe community.

Khadijah Britton was 23-years- old at the time of her disappearance. She is 5'8-5'9" tall, and weighed between 150-180 pounds. Khadijah has a tattoo on her right forearm of the word "Wailacki, " and she is sometimes referred to by her nickname, Dij. She was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, black t-shirt, and blue stretch pants.

There is currently a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individuals involved with Khadijah's disappearance.

Britton’s grandfather Ronnie Hostler told us that after four years, he wants his granddaughter’s case solved “We have three law enforcement agencies that know what happened to Khadijah,” Hostler said. He requested the public come forward to assist them in their investigation.

Connie Hostler, Khadijah’s mother, remembered her daughter fondly for her “stubborn attitude and crazy but annoying laugh.” She said, “I appreciate all the love and support for Khadijah!” Hoslter reflected that “Not a second of my day goes by without thoughts and tears for my child” and said that it is “time my daughter to be brought home and it is time for justice for my girl.”

Negie Fallis was on the loose again. He has exited prison, apparently without public notice...but not for long. He seems to have served a whopping eight (8) months on a four year (48 month) sentence. Now he's been caught doing a few things verboten for felons...and he's being charged with eight (yay, 8!) felonies. BTW, the clip linked below has links in its comments sections, yet. Special treat for the astute reader.

And he is out again. He's been arrested several times since her kidnapping and for the amount of criminal history and activity that he's been caught doing, he has spent no substantial amount of time being incarcerated for any single one of these.
She was due to testify against him for the hammer assault the day after she was forcibly removed. They need to go to the property out there where everyone complains on Facebook about all the garbage the one that his sister is half owner of , or so she claimed on more than one occasion while aggressively physically threatening the innocent people who have been offering to assist in the labor and financial aspect of getting it cleaned up. Apparently there's some reason why she's not in any way happy with the idea of people cleaning it up and I have discussed this with one of her immediate family members to get an idea of what kind of mess this is and to make sure they were seeing the comments she was making in case that area hadn't been searched before, and was told that it's not a regular size personal or even community dumping ground, but it's a pretty gigantic one which had so much trash there that they have not been able to get it searched by law enforcement, or the family because they would like to but probably won't be allowed to do that seeing the way it was being discussed over social media and I will just assume that law enforcement either has no desire to dig through the landfill on the piece of property in which the sister was violently protesting to protect for some reason unknown or even understandable.
So it sits there just sitting.
Disgusting the residents of covelo and probably hiding more secrets than just one.
