yea I couldn't rule out that they did whatever they thought they could get away with. There are fire cameras all over our area but they might have a harder time detecting small amounts of smoke at night. A huge bonfire on the beach IMO would be too likely to attract attention. Then again, these kids didn't seem to have a whole lot of respect for rules of any kind so who knows?
Your last sentence is based on the fact that they were all at a party and drinking?

One big question I have is why the front window is broken and the back windows are rolled down? What broke the window, and why do that if the back ones are already down? Two people in the car, one in back, car flips, the person in front doesn't know the windows in back are down? IDK? My mind running in circles.
Would the front windshield break from the pressure of going into the water? (I'm positive this has already been discussed in the past threads but I've missed them.)

Wait...were BOTH rear windows rolled down?

I thought only the rear driver's side was down? (To the child safety limits, in addition to the driver's front window being smashed) I hate to send everyone back to examine the NY Post series again, but I'm reasonably certain the tint in the rear passenger window was clearly visible?

Moo....most party people keep keep their booze and smoke in their vehicle. You want to share with your friends not the whole party :) My windows are always down somewhat, no matter the season, unless it is raining hard. I just like frest air.....moo

I always crack my driver's window a bit too, but having just one rear window down creates that awful sound when you drive at speed. You guys know the one I mean? It sounds almost like you have a bad tire? twunktwhwapthwunkthwap

Window-breaking tool

A driver used a window-breaking tool to escape her car after she drove into the Delaware and Raritan Canal in Franklin, Somerset County, on Thursday, July 21, 2022.

I think a fire extinguisher/respirator is probably a good idea.

Unless you live in an area with a lot of water and roads that may lead you into it I don't think having something that would break out the windows is particularly useful.

No items that could potentially lead to your safety are a bad idea.

Thanks for this post. If the EDR is only activated by airbag deployment, I am not certain that we will get that infomation that they can provide. I do think that an airbag deployment at some point perhaps took place. I also found this, which indicates that airbag deployment is not required to trigger a EDR to begin recording data. I also found corroborating statements in many other links. Let's hope that her EDR did record much info. JMO

The algorithm that sets off the capturing of EDR data can be triggered without deploying an airbag. On the EDR report of data there is generally a line that states “Events Recovered" and next to that it will state either Deployment Event or Non-deployment Event. Deployment events, obviously deployed an airbag component, such as an airbag, seat belt pretensioner or some combination. A non-deployment event records the same information a deployment event would but there was no airbag system component deployment.

I'm glad there is a discussion about the EDR. I hope it provides some details about what happened to Kiely. If those running the CHP investigation will read it and include the readings in their findings it may provide some clues. Less accurate true crime YouTubers like Grizzly reported Kiely's CR-V didn't have one (after stating hers was a 2011 when it is in fact a 2013) which may have given some people the idea there was no EDR in her vehicle. If it did record all the parameters that they are able to lots of info could possibly shed light on how she ended up on the reservoir.

Nice article.

“To improve safety, more vehicles are being equipped with laminated side windows — but a majority also have at least one window made of tempered glass,” John Nielsen, managing director of Automotive Engineering and Repair for AAA, said after the 2019 story.”

Good to know most cars have at least one window with the much easier to break tempered glass.

A new AAA report lists 21 pages' worth of cars and trucks that have laminated side or rear glass that, during the organization's tests, were impenetrable by consumer glass-breaking tools. Some of these vehicles date back to the 1970s, although the majority were built within the past five to 10 years. One in three 2018 models have such glass, AAA claims, which means that if you are trapped in a vehicle and the glass is your only escape route, surviving may depend on knowing exactly which windows are most easily broken.

Speaking of airbag deployments just gave me a thought. It may sound crazy, but there has been considerable discussion centered around what many consider the "likely" path that Kiely's car took to wind up in water. I say "likely" because none of us knows. It was stated by our local poster that drove it, that the dirt road, described as little more than a path, was riddled with bumps and ruts and potholes, so plentiful and severe that the driver feared their car may be damaged. If Kiely was impaired enough to somehow end up on that path when trying to leave, it is quite possible that she could have hit a hole hard enough or at enough speed to cause her airbag to deploy, completely blocking her vision in what was already a very dark night, and causing her to drive into the water before the airbag deflated enough for her to regain control. JMO
IMO I'd think she's apply the brake. And it's hard for me to imagine someone continuing to drive on like that with an airbag in their face, no matter how messed up they were.

I also can't imagine driving more than a snail's pace on that road. @Truckeeite has described it, as well as the woman in that one vid upthread that drove it in the dark. What they relayed makes it hard for me to imagine someone speeding on it. MOO

If this was like a Rorschach inkblot test, and I had limited time to answer your question... the first thing that came to my mind is someone rolled the windows down so that the car would not only sink, but sink quickly. All MOO.

Good question! I think about that too. Could have happened when trying to get out of the car, or if she were sleeping it off in the back seat for awhile with the windows down so it wouldn’t get all foggy, or because the booze in the car was stashed there and they could have been reaching in through the window to grab up the bottle/can, etc.

I used to do this to get airflow without getting dust in my vehicle. If she was following a car on her way to the site, this is a great way to not get coated in dust, but still have airflow...

Totally agree. Air bag didn't deploy on that road. That is a bumpy road, but not a overly challenging road. It is a road one would expect going "around" a camp ground area trying to find the main road. I have driven many roads like that. I can absolutely see her stirring up dust on that road, then missing the dead end and going down the embankment in the lake. Any one could do that in the dark. Even the lady who filmed it was creeping towards the edge, not totally certain where it was.

One week ago today, KR's parents learned the very sad fate of their daughter.

Thinking of all the parents still waiting for any news about their missing child. 16 yr old Karlie Guse comes to mind, missing from her home since Oct 2018, following an early evening HS Party where she became very paranoid after smoking weed. In this case, she called her parents for a ride home at 8 pm but disappeared from the family home sometime after 7 AM the following morning.

Another benefit of a complete autopsy by the ME will be to determine if KR suffered a medical episode such as a seizure that resulted in her entering the water. IMO, many teens are not aware of or do not take seriously the Rx warning label of mixing alcohol (i.e., large volume) with their regular medication.

To be clear, there's been no report of KR taking any Rx but something I don't think we can't rule out. MOO

Reposting the video made by Adventures with Purpose to educate the public on how to escape from a car that is submerged in water. The AWP website also sells the escape tool that they use to break tempered glass and cut the seat belt, it is about $6.95 (IIRC) and is small and can be attached to your key chain or hung on your rearview mirror.

The video is very detailed and is about 37 minutes or so, so if you don't have time to watch it right now, you may want to save it on your computer somewhere and go back to it when you have time. It is well worth it, and can save a life in an emergency.

Also gives details about where not to store the escape tool, such as glove compartment, etc. as they show how hard it would be to find it in the precious seconds that you have to get out of the car alive before drowning.

They also stress that it can be used if a car is on fire, or any crash that could lead to noxious fumes that are dangerous before a fire, and they simulate several scenarios.

A highly recommended video by AWP, a search and rescue group that we have all come to trust for their expertise and organizational character.

"Adventures with Purpose does not accept rewards," said Linda Luchetti, a spokesperson for the Rodni family.

She said the reward was partially funded by a *** account set up for Linda Nieman, Kiely's mother that has raised nearly $63,000.

Larger donations pledged to the reward have been returned, Luchetti said.

Adventures with Purpose is expected to stream an episode on finding Kiely in the coming weeks on their YouTube channel, which has millions of followers.
SBM. IIRC, in one of the news videos on this case, Doug Bishop of AWP states that if they were given the reward they would honor it.

The video in question:

That's a broad brush ... I did some pretty dumb things as a teen, thank God no one lost their life.

IMO, the sad takeaway/awareness - these kids will be more aware of watching out for each other and if partying, will stay put or have a DD, which evidently they did. The details of why Kiely got in her car and drove away aren't clear. But I am leaning towards this being a tragic accident. The details when made public, will be a sobering moment and likely something the teens will remember well into their adulthood.

Respectfully, presumably, they both drove it sober. While we do not know for certain that Kiely was impaired, we likewise do not know that she wasn't. JMO

Perhaps I can help. This is not akin to The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking who enjoyed being a thingfinder while walking down the street and became excited to find an empty spool of thread.

Instead think: In 2018, 12 young boys on a soccer team called the Wild Boars became trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand. All were stuck for over two weeks before they were miraculously rescued by a team of Thai Navy Seals and specialist cave divers.

Adventures with Purpose is an underwater scuba diving team who rely upon a breathing apparatus commonly referred to as air tanks. Scuba is an acronym for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. Their methodical work serves a beneficial purpose for humanity.

Source: Wiki [edited for clarity]

An adventure is an exciting experience or undertaking that is typically bold, sometimes risky. Adventures may be activities with danger such as scuba diving, or other extreme sports. Adventures are often undertaken in order to achieve a greater goal such as the pursuit of knowledge that can only be obtained by such activities.

According to adventurer André Malraux, who served France's President Charles de Gaulle, wrote in his La Condition Humaine, "If a man is not ready to risk his life, where is his dignity?".

Author Jon Levy suggests that an experience should meet several criteria to be considered an adventure
:
  1. Be remarkable—that is, worth talking about
  2. Involve adversity or perceived risk
  3. Bring about personal growth
Thanks for this perspective. I wonder what percentage of AWP’s YT subscribers would define “adventure” in language similar to that used by Levy or Malraux… but it’s a fair point (and I think I did own my curmudgeonliness when I said I’m uncomfortable with the glib tone of that part of the moniker)…

I do know what SCUBA stands for (didn’t need a PhD for that, just some low-key NAUI diver certs). So that’s something, anyway.

It's true that smoking weed is smelly. But what if they were vaping?

Short answer: Yes. Longer answer: Vaping does smell of weed but that smell doesn’t linger the way it does with weed smoke. Rather, weed vapor dissipates very quickly, so the scent is gone almost as soon as it appears.

It doesn’t stick around and incriminate you either. Whereas, weed smoke sticks to hair and clothing fibers, letting everyone within a fifty-foot radius know what you’ve been up to, weed vapor doesn’t linger.

Teen vaping of marijuana doubled between 2013 and 2020, indicating that young people may be swapping out joints, pipes or bongs for vape pens, according to a new study.
We don’t even know if they were using pot at all, but any/all methods would probably have been at a party of that size. Mags referred to guys trying to get them to do bong rips, but there were also social media pics of the same teens (not at the party) holding vape pens, so anything is possible until we have facts confirmed.
