this makes sense. BBM, there was a case not too long ago, I cant remember the names but some teen guys killed this homeless guy for standing up for another homeless guy they were shooting w an airsoft gun. they came back LATER and killed him. I don't live there so I don't know the "climate" regarding homeless, but I do know they have a large homeless population and also a large conservatively political population. idk could that be related?

George Lowery is the homeless gentleman who was recently beaten to death for standing up for another homeless man who was being harassed.

The houseless are dehumanized in our society and in mainstream media throughout the country, so I'm not sure how much local anti-homeless sentiment could play into this (although it certainly could be a contributing factor!).

The horrible NYPost has relentlessly stalked homeless, likely disturbed, people and shamed them with front page articles and there's some understandable fear here that this kind of continued campaign will lead to increased violence against that population in the NYC area.

Two recent examples (sorry for the gawker links):

Anyway, there have been a number of killers who specifically targeted homeless and transient people in the last decade.

There is train hopper Michael Elijah Adams who is probably responsible for a number of murders of transient and homeless people: http://www.richmond.com/news/article_ec296178-3912-5097-bf3c-b746c789a96e.html

And once-homeless aspiring actor Aeman Presley: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/bloodlust-drove-georgia-man-charged-with-killing-four-police-say/

And in Moscow a couple decided to "cleanse" (shudder) the capital: https://www.rt.com/news/234043-moscow-homeless-killer-gang/

this is horrible. the crime this morning happened next to where i work. there has been word around downtown that the city is trying to move the homeless out of the east village because of the all-star game. homelessness is a real problem in san diego, and it doesn't seem like anyone has any answers. it must be terrifying to be on the street right now. i hope they catch this monster, and i'm sure keeping my eyes out for him.

The guy in the video doesn't really look middle aged. More like 30ish. I hope it's not more than one person.

agree carbuff. I thought in the video he looked and moved like someone in their late twenties or thirties.

Woe to this despicable monster moving around the city setting human beings on fire.

I feel deeply emotional and helpless as I hear the count going up. As I'm sitting here safe inside my home typing away, he's out there planning to take another life of a person who has no place to go to be safe. I imagine LE may get the best clues by showing his pic to the homeless. Praying he is from around here and stays in the area. Praying that someone recognizes this killer and will turn him in. I want so badly for this evil man to be brought down.

MOO, I hope the mayor is starting to realize hiding the homeless is not an answer. The news said there's maybe 5,000 homeless here! It's time the city work towards more affordable housing, rent-control, more shelters and programs that really address solutions.

In any case, the Mayor says finding suspect in homeless killings is top priority

okay, I viewed the video about ten more times and stopped it frame by frame. I guess it's possible that the POI is middle-aged since his face looks slightly angular or gaunt for a much younger person (of course that younger person might just be lean in the same way for all kinds of genetic or lifestyle reasons)

Analyzing the video a little-
Are these snippets in order by time? If so it seems a little odd.
In the first snippet he looks like he's tapping something (a candy bar or similar?) on the counter nervously or to make some noise?
He goes to the cooler cases and gets a can out and walks to the front with it.
He also appears to be looking outside the store from inside as though he's checking for someone or something. I wonder if this is why the police have left the possibility of there being more than one person involved.

Clothing:

His pants look a little long but otherwise things appear to fit.
He has a few things hanging from his back- what is the item attached to his back belt loop or pocket? Does it look like a light colored bandana or towel? It almost looks like a pair of light colored work gloves to me, which makes no sense given he's already wearing dark gloves.
About those gloves- do they look like motorcycle gloves or industrial warehouse gloves or something else? They appear to be rather tight fitting for plain old generic winter gloves.
There's a long very thin chain that's swinging down behind him - it's hard to tell what this might be and whether it's attached to the back pack. It's almost like a wallet chain without a wallet attached.
His hat appears to be bright green but I think everything in the video clip that's full color is over-saturated and shot through with bright yellow, so I'm thinking it may actually be an army hat or hunter green. His over shirt or jacket also has an Army Navy/Hunting feel to it. In fact his dress style reminds me of some survivalists I've seen encountered on the East Coast.

Interested in what other people think after watching the store camera footage again.

I think he looks to be in his late twenties to very early thirties. For a moment there in the video, I thought his face wasn't very masculine looking. Is that a chain, or what is it, hanging from his back pocket?

Thank You marble for watching that video ten or more times and describing what you noticed.
It chills me to think "maybe more than one person doing these attacks" as carbuff mentioned.

This still image seems brighter, but I wouldn't describe his hat as Hunter Green. It's been driving me nuts, what does he have in his hand?

An interview with the clerk from the store here:

"Elliot told NBC 7, the man in the surveillance video bought a gas can, one gallon of fuel, a lighter and gum.
“He was kind of nervous and a fast talker so I made a joke with him. Kind of like, 'you talk too fast' but he was kind of looking at me funny,” Elliott said.

I watched the videos a couple of times but they're too blurry for me to make out much. That's a good point about the face. Is the walk maybe not masculine either? I'm terrible at that kind of thing.

I wonder if the older age was what was reported by the witness who saw him near the crime scene with the gas can, and that's led to some confusion given the POI looks much younger than that in the video clips. Could be why police thought there may be more than one person involved.

I hesitated thinking maybe this killer looked feminine, and I see others commenting on that. For some reason though, the size of the ears just makes me think it's a young male.

https://www.facebook.com/sandiegopolicedepartment/posts/1060204410735202

Yeah, and that would fit the restless body language. Lots of young guys have trouble holding in the energy.

He looks like he's used to wearing gloves. He doesn't fumble the things he picks up.

He really does have large ears, doesn't he?

Eta: after looking at the other enhanced photos, he may be older than he looks. There's a softness to the jaw and lines around the eyes.

OMG, I didn't know he bought the fire starting supplies there! I didn't know what he bought or how they were linking him for sure to the fire. I guess at first I wanted to block out some of the horrifying details.

Poor Elliot, store clerk, sounds like a nice person and is probably blaming himself needlessly because who would think someone would buy those supplies for such evil purposes.

SDPD said a person of interest in the attacks was recorded on a gas station surveillance camera just a few blocks from the Moreno Boulevard attack, allegedly buying things to lights a fire.

“This guy walked in and asked me if we have gas cans here and we do. So I kind of reached for one,” Elliott said.

About 15 minutes later, after firefighters extinguished a fire under an overpass near the Interstate 5, they discovered the charred remains of a homeless man.
