Man to stand trial for 1973 cold-case murder at Stanford

Wed, Feb 5, 2020, 9:56 am
Accused serial killer John Arthur Getreu claims he didn't have contact with Leslie Marie Perlov, the woman he allegedly strangled to death on the Stanford campus nearly 47 years ago, but his statements appeared to be contradicted during a court hearing on Tuesday by DNA evidence found under her fingernails.
[.....]
During the hearing, Santa Clara County sheriff's investigators described how they reopened the cold case in November 2016 and sent fingernail clippings taken from Perlov's body to the sheriff's office's crime lab to look for DNA evidence. Kevin Kellogg, a lab criminalist, testified that he sampled debris under the clippings and extracted DNA from two individuals: Perlov and an unidentified male.
[.....]
After Kellogg established the DNA profiles for Perlov and the unknown male, investigators identified Getreu as a potential suspect. Investigators have previously stated they used an outside firm to seek a match through familial DNA databases.
[.....]
The probability of the DNA found under Perlov's right hand nails coming from anyone else other than Getreu is 1 in 65 septillion, he said. The probability of the DNA found under Perlov's left hand nails coming from another contributor other than Getreu is 1 in 10 billion. He found no evidence of a third contributor, he added.
[.....]
Compelling testimony during the preliminary hearing also came from a 62-year-old woman. She told the court that Getreu had raped and strangled her when she was a teenager living in Palo Alto.
[.....]
At Tuesday's preliminary hearing, Presiding Judge Linda Clark ruled there was enough evidence to hold Getreu for trial for Perlov's murder. Because her body was found partially undressed and her stockings and undergarments were stuffed into her throat, Clark also found there was sufficient evidence to try Getreu for committing murder with the intent of perpetrating a rape or sexual assault.
[.....]
Getreu pleaded not guilty to the charges in December. He remains in the county's Main Jail in San Jose without bail. His next court date is Feb. 18, when he will appear for arraignment on the charges.

Leslie Marie Perlov was last seen at her job in Palo Alto on the afternoon of Feb. 13, 1973, the sheriff's office stated in a press release. Her orange 1972 Chevrolet Nova was discovered later that day, parked at the gate of an old quarry in Los Altos Hills, shortly off the exit from Interstate 280 and about a 5 mile drive from Perlov's place of work, authorities said...

Genetic genealogy leads to arrest in 1973 cold case murder of 21-year-old California woman Leslie Perlov, authorities say

Janet Ann Taylor, 21, was found dead on Sand Hill Road and Manzanita Way near the Stanford University campus on March 25, 1974. John Arthur Getreu has been arrested in connection with her death, San Mateo County sheriff's investigators announced at a press conference on May 16, 2019.

A person who would kill two young women back in 1974 and who wasn't caught until decades later (by DNA evidence) was no doubt responsible for other murders as well. Who were his victims?

John Arthur Getreu is now in prison. Perhaps finding another murder which he committed and holding the death penalty over his head will get him to give up his other victims.
