Follow-up to above: Cary's father wrote about his son's death as definitive in a forward for another son's book (screenshot also attached). He states that Cary died at the age of 19 in Mexico. No mention of cause of death, but age would make it seem that he died the same year that he and Miller were reported missing.

The embassy files make no mention of repatriation of remains for a person that matches Kristal's age/description, but the electronic records uploaded to Wikileaks are not entirely complete. Repatriated remains records are usually pretty accurate, in my experience. The 1970s collection has not been entirely declassified, so Kristal's file could still be in a box somewhere, but the Mexicanist historian crowd has filed tons of FOIAs in relation to the activities of American citizens during this time frame. I'll check my photos from NARA's index files.

First of all, I think it's obvious LE lost the original file of this case; that would explain the lack of information and the 2001 report by Linda's sister; their families, Miller and Kristal, informed the authorities about their disappearance in 1973, there's no way to deny that: LE sent the dental records to Mexico and the newspapers informed about the case.
Maybe, eventually, LE lost the file or even decided to leave it be (due to the political situation). So sad.
