"Mia was a really good kid," her godmother Noemí López told the station. "She was the light of my home. She didn't deserve this."

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner lists Mia's manner of death as a homicide, caused by strangulation and sharp force injury of the wrist

The family told KABC that the investigators said Avalos could have been driving around with Mia's body for days before she was found.

LOS ANGELES - A woman was charged Tuesday with murder and assault in connection with the death of her 4-year-old daughter, who was found unresponsive last week in a vehicle in East Los Angeles.

Maria Del Refugio Avalos, 38, was set to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom on one count each of murder and assault on a child causing death.

A woman later determined to be the girl's mother was detained at the scene and subsequently arrested for suspicion of murder, sheriff's officials said.

"The initial autopsy from the Department of Medical Examiner determined the cause of death as homicide," sheriff's officials said in a statement.

Avalos was arrested Friday, 1/28/24 for allegedly killing her 4-year-old daughter in Southern California, authorities said. Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. responded to a business parking lot late Thursday night [1/27/24] in East Los Angeles. The child, who has been identified as Mia Gonzalez, was found unresponsive inside a vehicle. She was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead. According to the Los Angeles County autopsy report released Saturday, the child's death has been ruled a homicide. The case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for review on Tuesday, Jan. 30. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner lists Mia's manner of death as a homicide, caused by strangulation & sharp force injury of the wrist.
