Father arrested in vicious near-fatal attack on infant

LOS ANGELES -- An infant boy is near death after his father allegedly beat, strangled and tried to drown him, stopping only when officers burst in on him at a Los Angeles apartment, Eyewitness News has learned.

The suspect was identified as the boy's father, Michael Freeman, 29, who recently got out of prison in Tennessee.

Police allege Freeman punched, strangled, slammed and tried to drown his 9-month-old child. Officers got into the apartment as the alleged assault was happening.

The child was transported to a local hospital and was considered in critical condition.

Police were called to the scene on the 800 block of South Hill Street by the child's mother early Thursday shortly after midnight. Freeman followed the children's mother to the apartment, police said.

She reported that Freeman had first threatened her and their other child, a 7-year-old, then grabbed their baby and fled.

He then went to a nearby vacant apartment where he tried to kill the child, police allege. Officers used a Taser multiple times to get him to stop the attack.

Officers said they saved the child's life, and he was taken to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center. He was in critical condition Thursday.
Another person, 25 years old, was taken to the hospital by paramedics.

Freeman is now behind bars and booked for attempted murder. His bail has been set to $1 million.

Detectives from the abused child unit took over the case.

Freeman, who recently got out of prison in Tennessee, is charged with one count each of attempted murder and child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to cause great bodily injury or death, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said.

Prosecutors say he was visiting L.A. from Nashville.

Police said the incident was caught on an officer's body camera.

If convicted as charged, Freeman faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison. The case remains under investigation by Los Angeles police.

Man Ordered to Stand Trial for Trying to Kill 8-Month-Old Son in LA Apartment

A parolee charged with trying to kill his 8-month-old son in a vacant Los Angeles apartment was ordered Monday to stand trial on attempted murder and child abuse charges.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge M.L. Villar found sufficient evidence against Michael Freeman, 30, of Nashville, Tennessee, to proceed to trial on the charges of attempted murder and child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to cause great bodily injury or death. Villar ordered Freeman, who is being held without bail, to return to court for arraignment on Sept. 23.

Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Hatami alleged when Freeman was first arraigned that the defendant forcibly took his son from the baby's mother following an argument, ran to an unoccupied room of an apartment in the 800 block of South Hill Street and punched him. The infant's injuries were also consistent with attempted strangulation and attempted drowning, according to the prosecutor, who told the judge that the baby may have permanent neurological injuries.

Police allegedly found Freeman beating the baby and reportedly had to use a Taser to subdue and arrest him on April 18.

Freeman was on parole and supervised release in Tennessee following his conviction in a federal drug case, and was allegedly involved in two incidents of domestic violence involving his baby's mother and two of her other children since his release, according to Hatami.

Michael Freeman pleaded no contest, and was sentenced to nine years in state prison in June 2023. The child has fully recovered.

Not enough time, it needs to be 20 years so the little boy can feel safe growing up. That baby won’t remember what was done to him. But this sicko, he will always be a threat.
