"According to an ICE official, Carlos Alejandro Reales-Dominguez is from El Salvador and entered the United States in April 2009. He crossed into the country near Galveston, Texas, as an unaccompanied minor."

"According to UC Davis, Dominguez was in his third year at UC Davis until April 25 when he was separated for academic reasons."

"He was charged with the deaths of David Breaux and Karim Abou Najm and for the attempted murder of Kimberlee Guillory. He is now in the Yolo County jail.
Police didn't know if Dominguez had a criminal record prior to this arrest or if he knew the victims. Police also didn't disclose a motive for the attacks."

"
The pair were both from the Bay Area and Dominguez took his roommate home to meet his family in Oakland. He was close to his younger siblings and called or FaceTimed them most days. He'd talk to his parents often, too, according to his former roommate and had friends from Oakland visit that'd known him since childhood.

"In my opinion, it makes me question: what does it take to make a murderer?" said the former roommate.

Dominguez would often share stories of violence he saw or experienced in Oakland growing up, according to his former roommate. In multiple stories about his teen years, Dominguez allegedly shared stories of fights he was involved in or saw.

Photos shared with CBS13 by the pair of friends show Dominguez at his own birthday party in 2021 with cake on his face. In another, on Halloween the same year, he is pictured with their group of friends. He "wasn't a loner," his former roommate said, and was social within a fraternity and a STEM program on campus at UC Davis. "

"Dominguez had a temper and in the summer of 2022, when he punched a hole in a shared door, it was a sign to his former roommate that it was time to move on and away from Dominguez. The friends believe he had deep-rooted anger issues, but at last check, thought he was working through it. "

""He was happy-go-lucky," said the former roommate, in describing Dominguez a few months before the series of stabbings, "Or so we thought.""

A trial to decide on Dominguez’s mental health is slated to start on July 24 at 9 a.m.

If a jury finds Dominguez is competent, then the criminal proceedings will pick up where they left off. If not, then he would likely be sent to a state hospital for treatment.

Dominguez is being represented by a public defender, Dan Hutchinson, who determined that the man dubbed the "Serial Stabber" has not yet showered since he was arrested and often goes days without eating. A student at the University of California in Davis, the 21-year-old murder suspect also believes he will return to class soon.

Hutchinson stated that he will present evidence that his client has been showing "outward signs of schizophrenia toward the end of his freshman year."

"He sits there each day in his empty cell, unclothed, unmedicated, untreated for his mental illness," the public defender stated. "He has not showered a single time, and if he ever has brushed his teeth, nobody appears to have seen that." However, prosecutors think Carlos Dominguez is "toying with the system" and should face a criminal trial.

Accused Davis serial killer Carlos Dominguez is not competent to stand trial, the Yolo County District Attorney's Office said, conceding to arguments that he is not mentally well.

Dominguez is due back in court on August 17 for a review hearing, during which the court is expected to formally order him to be committed to a state hospital. The hospital system will then likely take 60 or more days to place him in a facility, according to Hutchinson.

Found competent to stand trial.
A former college student accused of stabbing two people to death and wounding a third in Northern California was found competent to stand trial, a prosecutor said Thursday.

Carlos Reales Dominguez will return to court on Jan. 5 and criminal proceedings will be reinstated if there isn't any challenge to his mental state, according to Yolo County assistant chief deputy district attorney Melinda Aiello, the Sacramento Bee reported.

[...]

Dominguez was sent to the state hospital in Atascadero until he was found competent to understand court proceedings and take part in his defense.

A doctor there submitted a Dec. 20 report declaring him competent, Aiello said.

Dominguez will stand trial for murder. His arraignment is set for March 13 with the trial at a later date.

Davis serial stabbing suspect Carlos Dominguez will stand trial

wow he looks completely different with shorter hair & may have gained some weight too
I imagine he's medicated now which could've helped in finding him competent?
if he really has schizophrenia, and was unmedicated at the time, how does that affect his eventual sentence?

Mar. 13: Pleads not guilty
The hearing was held in Yolo County Court in Woodland. Dominguez was told what charges he is facing: two counts of premeditated murder with deadly weapon enhancements, a third court of attempted murder with a deadly weapon enhancement, and two other case enhancements for special circumstances.

Dominguez entered a plea of "not guilty" to all of the counts, the district attorney's office says.

Dominguez is scheduled to return to court on June 18 for a trial-setting conference, the district attorney's office says.
