The remains of Rachel Elizabeth Imani Bucker, 27, were found dismembered and wrapped in plastic and duct tape along the shoreline near the Bay Farm Island Bridge on July 20, Alameda police said.

Her head, feet and hands had all been removed — and have not yet been located,KTVU reported.

The body of the 27-year-old, whose identity was confirmed through an Aug. 30 DNA test, was found between a walking path and the water by a hiker, KRON reported.

Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged the woman’s fiancé, 42-year-old Joseph C. Roberts, with her murder.

Roberts’ DNA was found on the duct tape used to encase her body, authorities said.

Buckner, a young mother and spoken word poet, met Roberts at San Francisco’s Golden Gate University School of Law. The law school classmates eventually struck up a tumultuous romance. In 2022, Buckner and Roberts allegedly broke into a residence owned by the woman’s family and assaulted her relatives.

Joseph Roberts was found guilty of second degree murder. He faces 15-life and is expected to be sentenced next month.

The Pleasanton man accused of killing, dismembering and dumping the body of his girlfriend near an Alameda shoreline is now facing life in prison after a jury found him guilty Monday.

 
A Pleasanton man who was found guilty of second-degree murder for killing his girlfriend almost a full year ago and dismembering her body was formally sentenced to 15 years to life in a state prison without the possibility of probation Tuesday morning in a packed courtroom in Oakland.

Around 50 people, including family and friends of the victim Rachel Elizabeth Imani Buckner, watched as others read their victim impact statements before Joseph Roberts, 43, was read his fate.

“Mr. Roberts, in my decades working in the criminal justice system I have seen a lot of heinous crime and also a lot of tragedy,” Alameda County Superior Court Judge Scott Patton said during the July 2 sentencing hearing. “Imani’s killing is a heartbreaking tragedy … your crime is one of the most heinous crimes I have ever seen.”
 
In a statement Tuesday, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office said Joseph Roberts, 43, was also ordered to pay $19,818 in restitution for the murder of Rachel Elizabeth Imani Buckner, 27.
