Christine, where is Mr. Van Norman the Supervising Deputy Coroner? I hope he's not with SF... if I had known, I wouldn't have also sent a letter to them. Thanks for the great work. It sure does seem rather dazzling what we will need to produce. Right now there even seems to be confusion on Rose's dental records (in that the ones produced might actually belong to her adopted/stepsister). I feel certain there are no fingerprints. If we can't eventually determine whose dental records are whose, we might only have DNA to rely on.

Wow People!

You have been very busy! You are all amazing! I don't have much to report. Wisconsin clearance house contacted me, I passed on all the info I have on Rose.

I sent an e-mail about the dental records but have not heard from anyone at this time. The first time it took a while to get back to me. But the wait was all worth it, they found records, over 30 years old records. That is very impressive that they have saved those for so long. So there is hope that they have Norma's or any of the other siblings.

I read all your postings about clinics and churches in California. Do I contact all of them? Has anyone else contacted them?

I sent an e-mail to

" Wisconsin clearance house contacted me, I passed on all the info I have on Rose."

IsabellaPR,
Are they going to list Rose on their site for the missing now?

Here's a little more information re Isabela's contact with the Wisconsin Clearinghouse from her morning email to me... don't know if it will help clarify things any better, but it might help:

I also got a phone call from WI clearance house. They have all the information. She called me twice and last time she was going to talk to her supervisor about the DNA test.

When she brought up the DNA to her boss the first time he/she said that only criminals could be added to CODIS. I asked her if I needed to send Jesse on a crime spree! I explained how CA Jane Doe was an open criminal case and DNA needed to be labeled as evidence. How this was the perfect way to add it to CODIS. I also sent her Darrel's e-mail in this matter.

In the early to mid 1970s it seemed like you couldn't go anywhere in California without being "witnessed to" by what we called "Jesus Freaks". I wonder if Rose found her way into The Family/Children of God? I have been looking at ex-members sites, but no luck so far. After her experience at Synanon, some other cult might seem like rescue.

Here's another cult with members who travel throughout America, it was founded in 1971 by an ex-Marine, Jim Roberts

... I spent a couple of hours yesterday reading personal acounts of ex-Family/Children of God members (fanscinating read btw) and many of them stayed with the organization for a significant number of years, traveling all over the world! I had no idea how large a group it was (and still is to some degree).

Do you have any URLs? It sounds fascinating. I had NO idea how many secretive cults are around and were so active during the 60s/70s, until I started out to do a bit of research on Rainbow Family Gatherings but then got side-tracked into learning about the Brethren.

The rainbow people are NOT part of a cult, but seem to be very underground, not really tracable or identifiable. Very interesting, but I've not read much at all, yet - keep getting side-tracked.

OK...sorry if this is a stupid question...but, one of ya'll may know this...maybe not..may not be an answer....

but, can't blame a girl fer tryin'......

say Rose was making her way from Oakland home (MI)...would there be a 'most likely' traveled route...like for example, from Philly to FL, 95 south all the way.

Anyone?

Christine, presuming the same routes existed then that exist today, I would guess taking 80 West out of San Francisco/Oakland and taking 80's jagged path thru a lot of states until 80 was running almost on the Michigan/Indiana border... and then taking 69 north to Flint. The states 80 ran thru were: CA, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana (and then north thru Michigan to Flint). Michigan and Indiana share a border.

Almost any religious cult (with "cult" being the key word) that existed back in the 70's (with many of them still existing today) would have totally discouraged Rose from contacting her family, as most cults saw family as outsiders who would try to undo the thorough brainwashing the cult had accomplished. Thus, belonging to a cult could mean Rose was still alive but believed so strongly in what the cult dictated that she never tried to contact her family. That's about the only reason I can see for Rose never contacting her family because the letters she wrote home when she was 15 and 16 screamed of a need for love and approval from her family. Were the Hare Krishnas active in SF in the early 70's?

From Dhanistha Dasi’s book- “Prabhupada Guide Dreams to Rock My Soul."
Walking along Market Street in downtown San Francisco, 1973, I saw them. This time there were maybe eight devotees dancing, chanting, and playing, drums and cymbals. The person leading was a tall strong man with the kindest face, childlike innocence, and an intensity that took me to a higher level. He closed his eyes, tightly in total concentration as he sang and stepped side to side with the rhythms of the mantra… Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama … I followed, recognizing the words from my favorite song and stayed glued to them until they turned to go back to the temple. This was it … all paths crossed here. … I often see in my mind’s eye that tall strong man with the kindest face and childlike innocence who was leading the hari-nama sankirtan party down Market Street the first time I saw devotees chanting … that gentle soul was Jayananda Prabhu.
Market Street in downtown SF is very close to China Town, which is the last known location for Rose.

I'm trying to read this entire thread, but it's going to take a long time, I only got to page 4 yesterday, and am unsure when I can resume, and obviously it's going to take me some time.

Can those posters who have been active since the very beginning please each post a summary of Rose's story to date?

AND, in the summaries, please post all links to all the photographs.

ALSO, why isn't Rose in the Charley Project, or at Doe - and are there any plans to submit her info to those websites?

Thanks.

Summary:

Rose Lena Cole, born 12-23-56 (if alive, she will turn 50 in December of this year) was born in Flint, Michigan. Rose was one of 3 siblings (Jesse, Pose and Rose). Her parents were divorced when she was young and, at some point, her father remarried a woman named Opal who also had 3 children. Rose's father adopted those children. Rose's real mother and father are now deceased. Her stepmother Opal is still alive. Rose's brother Jesse, and his wife (known here as Isabela) are the ones who initiated the search for Rose.

I am not clear on many of the dates involved but generally Rose started getting in trouble at home and then running away some time around the age of 14 or 15. She was accused of doing drugs and was called before a Judge where she apparently smarted off to the Judge and said she would "quit doing drugs but she wouldn't quit selling them". Two of Rose's sisters say she definitely was doing drugs, but one of her school friends said she wasn't. It's not known whether or not Rose was actually selling drugs. The Judge sent her (from Flint, MI) to Synanon in Oakland, CA. (for drug treatment) in either late May or early June of 1972, when Rose was 15 years old. At some point around November or December of 1972, Rose ran away from Synanon. In December of 1972, Rose turned 16.

Rose wrote home while at Synanon, or in the aftermath of running away, 5 times... 4 letters and 1 postcard. Isabela has copies of 3 of the letters, one letter (the last one) has been lost over the years, and the stepmother may have possession of the postcard. The last letter Isabela has was written on Rose's 16th birthday but not mailed until February of 1973 because Rose didn't have a stamp.

Rose has never been heard from again. In one of her last letters home, Rose mentions being in China Town (in San Francisco we presume) and having a bad kidney infection. In a previous letter she mentioned that she was pretending she was 19 years old.

Later, Opal and Rose's father divorced and the remaining family split up. Nothing was done to locate Rose until her brother Jesse's wife (Isabela) realized a few years ago that her husband had a missing sister. Isabela put up a website with two pictures of Rose and asked anyone to contact her if they knew her whereabouts. I found the picture of Rose when she was about 2 years old and thought she might be Sharon Marshall, so contacted Isabela. At that point we realized Rose was much older when she disappeared, so her file was put here on the Cold Case forum.

Isabela is working with Jerry Nance at NCMEC to have her listed; however, there are many complications in jurisdiction in the case due to her living in Flint, MI, being missing in California, and her brother living in Wisconsin. Every attempt is being made in Wisconsin to have her officially listed as missing. Once that is accomplished, Mr. Nance can list her on NCMEC. And until the Wisconsin missing report is officially filed, nothing else can be done.

Isabela is working with the Coroner from Marin County, CA (across the bridge from San Francisco) on a possible Jane Doe. Right now it looks like that Jane Doe isn't Rose, but again there are snags due to dental work.

We also assume Rose was penniless and living on the streets of San Francisco after she ran away from the Oakland Synanon (across the Oakland Bay Bridge from San Francisco).

Rose had no driver's license and no Social Security number. There may be dental records for Rose but right now we think they are mixed up with her stepsister's dental records. Trying to obtain records from the early 70's has been tedious, at best.

At this point, we presume Rose is no longer living. All of her letters to her family scream of wanting to be loved and to be forgiven and wanting to come home. She vowed she would call her stepmother Opal when she turned 18, but that call never came.

Rose had dark brown wavy hair, amber eyes and I don't remember how tall she was. If I find out how tall she was, I'll post it here. However, she was probably still growing at age 15, so we probably will never know how tall she was. Everyone describes her as having beautiful porcelain skin. She may have had a few freckles on her nose, but not many other freckles. We don't know of any tatoos. I don't recall any scars.

Pictures of Rose, comments from Rose's sister-in-law, and the letters Rose wrote home can be found at this url:

Great job HOT! :woohoo:

Thank you....for all the newbies on the thread, this is great!

Thank you so much for taking the time to do that summery HoT. You did a fantastic job.

Thanks, Shadow and Christine. I was interrupted several times by my little boy while writing it, so forgot a few things and just went back and added hair color, eye color, etc. If anyone remembers other pertinent info that should be added, please email or PM me today while the post can still be edited.

Let's try to remember the post number for the summary of Rose's case so we can refer any other new members to it.

I finally got a response to my post at the Cult Education Forum. Here it is:

"I was in Synanon (Santa Monica) in 1971/72. I WISH I knew with certainty exactly when.
Although I can say quite honestly that my experience there has never left my heart or mind, in the last few days I have in been especially preoccupied with the matter. That's how I came to find this forum; a search on Google.
I've even taken to jotting down names of people that have been part of this "flood" of thoughts/information.
Considering the poster who I am responding to mentioned a 15 year old girl's name I'd have to say that there's little likelihood we're going to share more than a general common experience. A 15 year old girl (or boy) would have been considered "a highschooler", and thus off-limits (even casually) to a "dopefiend" in "the newcomer program" such as I was. I was part of a large intake process that took place at that point in time.
A "cult"? Yeah, sure- I suppose so. I loved it, and wish I had stayed longer."

Thank you ever so much, HeartofTexas!

This is simply a superb summary, and so finely written, you must be a professional author.

I do intend to read the entire thread, but it's gonna take some good long while; meantime, I certainly will remember and will refer others to your stellar Post # 715

I hope that Rose is located soon.

When doing searches, I hope that people are also using, "Rosie" .... you never know....
