Synopsis: On August 31, 2000, Sergio Sprandel was killed with a gunshot to the head in a deserted area of the parking lot of the La Jolla Village Square shopping center. Customers leaving the mall at about 10:20 p.m. saw his body lying on the ground next to his Chevrolet Blazer and called 911.

Sprandel was last seen alive by his girlfriend earlier that evening at the apartment they shared on Nobel Drive, as Sprandel was leaving to meet an acquaintance. At the time, Sprandel was carrying a large amount of money; however, the money was missing when his body was found.

A Minnesota father determined to find justice for his son killed in La Jolla 10 years ago is making an extreme statement to San Diego authorities at City Hall.
On Thursday, Hans Sprandel began his first day of a hunger strike against the San Diego Police Department for not making an arrest in the murder of his son, Sergio.

"He went to the La Jolla shopping center and he was shot there," said Hans Sprandel.

On the night of August 31, 2000, Sergio Sprandel, a student at the time with dreams of becoming a Navy SEAL, left his home on Nobel Drive to meet someone at La Jolla Village Square. He was later found shot to death. Hans Sprandel said the meeting was a steroid deal for which his son carried $15,000 in cash.

"He went to the shopping center with a substantial amount of money and they murdered him for the money," said Hans Sprandel.

SDPD homicide detectives did not return 10News phone calls, but Sprandel said police told him despite having a suspect they did not have enough evidence to make an arrest.

"The DA thinks they don't have enough on this case so I really don't know what the problem is. They know who done it, they know all the circumstances," said Sprandel.

According to witnesses, two men were seen running through the parking lot following the shooting and left in a black sport utility vehicle.

One of the men suspected in the incident was described as Asian, 6 feet 1 inches tall, with long hair in the back but shaved sides.

"Our entire family fell apart because of that case and it's been a drama," said Sprandel. "I'm bound and determined to stay here; whatever it takes to get some answers this time."

Bump! I hope this case is solved and the killers are brought to justice some day!

This case has been solved.
I knew one suspect but had no knowledge of this case until last year when SDPD called me for a character reference.
I’m glad he is locked away, he is truly a and literally destroys everything he comes into contact with.
I hope Sergio’s family can have some closure.

The irony that the “asian” suspect was transferred to prison on the day before Sergio’s death.
