Teen Couple, Sophie Edwards And Ethan Manzano, Missing In Angeles National Forest

July 5, 2021
A teen couple has been missing in the Angeles National Forest for four days as of Monday afternoon.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department was asking for the public’s help in locating 19-year-old Sophie Rayanne Edwards and her boyfriend, 19-year-old Ethan Manzano.

Edwards and Manzano were last seen at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 51 of Angeles Crest Highway, according to the LASD.

The two were inside a silver 2007 Isuzu Ascender with California plates 6BFA756.

Anyone with information of their whereabouts was asked to call 911 or the LASD at 323-890-5500.

Post, the family is requesting volunteers for a search effort.
They specifically need rock climbers with equipment.
Hoping this results in the discovery of this young couple.

Why is the family the one trying to organize a search party? Hopefully the authorities are also searching, with established experienced SAR groups, making a serious effort to find this young couple.

I live in So Cal, and I don't see anything on the news, when usually media follows and reports on many other missing people in wilderness areas, hikers, climbers etc.

The vehicle has not been found, that winding road has had many accidents, these young people could very well have gone off the road and may need help asap.

I keep checking....the only info I see is from VVNG three days ago.

sorry, maybe there is a thorough ongoing search going on...just frustrated....reminds me too much of my friend's best friend, who police searched for 2 days only, until a private group took matters into their own hands, and was lucky to have a helicopter pilot among them.

While I certainly hope the couple is found soon, as far as I know, the car has not yet been found. In news reports, the mother of the missing Sophia Edwards, Michelle Edwards said “Sheriffs say that they got a ping off a cell tower in Wrightwood…so we know that they made it off the mountain.”

It sounds like she may think a ping in Wrightwood means the couple were in or around Wrightwood, but actually they could have been quite far away. While she of course may know something we don't know, it seems dangerous to arrange a search and call for volunteers and rock climbers without better info about a specific area.

If a specific area in the mountains were identified, well-trained local search and rescue teams would be all over it. If a less remote area was identified, a search by volunteers might make more sense.

Maybe they just want to examine places a car might have gone off the edge of a road. That might make sense, though presumably LE has already done a lot of that. I hope that the people organizing the search understand the limitations of cell phone localization and that any searchers stay safe.

Without trying to sound insensitive, why is the family appealing to the public for such specialized help? Why isn't a SAR team or something leading the way?

I don't know why the family has decided to go ahead and make the search requests.
They asked for volunteers to meet at a Hardware Store this morning at 8AM.
I am trying to get to Facebook so that I can see anymore updates, but it seems to be down for me.
The down detector isn't showing any widespread problems, so maybe it's a temporary glitch?

I was able to log in to Facebook.
The request for volunteers was on ME page. (She is mom to Sophia)
I believe it is one of Sophia's sisters that posted .
She has asked for questions to be directed at ME.

Here is a small portion of the post~

"HELP NEEDED! We are asking for volunteers to help with a search. We specifically need volunteers who have rock climbing experience with their own gear for repelling (including helmets), and volunteers who own drones. If you or someone you know has this experience and equipment please direct them to this post." KC

My guess is that the family is desperate and doesn't know much about cell phone localization or about the dangers of volunteer searches in remote areas and that use technical skills.

A Wrightwood local using a drone found the wreckage.

Oh such sad news. I was really hoping it wouldn't turn out this way. JMO that local is a hero for using his drone to assist in this case.

There are many cases on WS that I wish someone would do the same by following the route of a car with a missing person. Maybe drone owner volunteers could be organized with LE into a missing person drone patrol. I know if I owned a drone I would rather do something helpful like that than just always take it up for an "ordinary" flight.

Yes he is. He said he had seen some reflections off glass but couldn't tell what it was until he was about 25 feet over. The pic the news was showing of the vehicle was horrendous.

There's an organization in Canada - DRONESAR - that has been doing that exact thing since 2019 or so. I remember following them on some case where someone had gone missing in the mountains <somewhere>, and the amount and quality of video footage was amazing. There were hordes of volunteers scrutinizing the video - unfortunately, I don't remember whether the individual was found.
