It bothers me that anyone is focusing on the fact that Dan and Stephanie chose to live at Olive Dell Ranch. They had an adorable little home and a fun active community to enjoy their retirement years. The fact that it’s a nudist community is completely irrelevant to the case. It’s so sad and tragic that their lives were cut short by a mentally unstable neighbor. Unfortunately events like this can happen anywhere.
I have not seen that focus here on WS, fwiw.

Lots of info in this article.

Rodriguez said the Menards complained that management was demanding membership fees from them and restricting the couple’s pool privileges.

”When they would go to the pool someone would harass them for money,” Rodriguez said. “People started poking around their RV and their mobile home, so what we did is we opened up our home to them. They would come every Friday, and if I had extra food, I would share it with them. They were good people. All they wanted to do was sing karaoke and hang out by the pool.”

In March, Storm, the eight-year resident, said management began serving eviction notices and raising rents. Stephanie Menard was one of the more engaged residents, attending meetings they had about the dispute.

In June, residents Wayne and Sandy Marinelli filed a lawsuit against the resort owners, alleging they improperly imposed fees, raised rents and issued eviction notices, said their attorney, Robert Williams of the BWA Law Group in Santa Ana. The next month, a judge issued a temporary restraining order blocking evictions of residents at the resort who refuse to pay certain fees, court records show.

The owners’ attorney responded to the request for the restraining order by filing a document with the court that said the fees and evictions were appropriate.

Pardon me if this has already been speculated on, but what do you all think he used to (allegedly) kill them? Or, did he use that gun and when he turned it on himself, it no longer worked? [Asking for a friend.]
ETA: GRAPHIC DISCUSSION.

LE said he tried to shoot himself but failed so I'm assuming he shot them, though that is not confirmed. I don't think they would be difficult for a 62yo man to overcome the couple so it wouldn't necessarily have to be a gun, imo.

If it were a gun, I'm guessing the underground area muffled the sound??? I don't know if that would be the case. The houses are so close to each other, the neighbors would hear gunshots otherwise.

edited to add: since they were found in bags, it's possible they were suffocated with bags.

I guess the perp didn’t like the Menards cutting the “shade tree” branches. It must have riled him up.
I think we give homicidal people too much credit for being 'rational'. Also, not sure why anyone would believe a man who murdered an innocent couple and their dog.

IMO, a deeply disturbed person like this man could not explain why he loathed and despised and wanted to kill his nice neighbours. So when asked why, he came up with a stupid excuse about tree trimming.

The real answer he should have given, when asked why he hated and wanted to kill them should have been "because there is something very wrong and twisted in me". But no one says that, do they?

IMO, he killed them because he hated people and wanted to kill, and they were close neighbours and highly vulnerable, ie not capable of fighting back.

To my understanding the issue with the tree trimming comes from a neighbour that hinted he hated the Menards for that. To LE he has not given a motive and the last news were saying he was not speaking to Detectives
If he is proven guilty and the motive is stupid neighbour fights, I hope justice will be fully served. All this is crazy, damn crazy

I'm not clear on what could ever be a non-stupid, non-crazy motive for killing anyone...

Like, if it was stealing something from them, that would be understandable and not crazy? We can all understand killing people for money...? Or, rising up against the unfairness of the new management by murdering his fellow victimized neighbours? Sure, that's completely understandable, I'd react the same way under such unfairness...(irony).

If nothing else, the severe consequences and likelihood of being caught, shows this guy seriously lost connection with reality back before he built his 5 foot tall concrete bunker.

Seems like it was a fairly recent build too. Started it about two and half years ago.
(Sorry, wasn't able to remove the amp link.)

Neighbors said they knew the 62-year-old as “Sparky,” and some described him as a loner, but also a nice person.

One neighbor, John Hills, said he remembers when Sparks started digging underneath his home.

“About two and a half years ago, he borrowed my mule in order to excavate a basement under his trailer,” Hills told KTLA’s Shelby Nelson. “He told me he needed to build a space that would keep him cool during summer because he was having a hard time affording the electricity.”

"What else is buried under that house?".....

AND.... perhaps...

WHO else?!?
Because Lani Uribes disappeared in 2020 and Sparks apparently started digging under his trailer around 2 1/2 years ago, I think it's unlikely that she's buried in that space.

I hope no other bodies were found besides those of the Menards (and possibly of their dog).

But perhaps Sparks is a procrastinator? ("I really must get around to that one day.")

I haven’t seen confirmation of murder weapon only that he barricaded himself in the bunker armed.
I don’t believe for a moment the rifle jammed would imagine it’s a whole lot harder to turn it on yourself. Sounds like he didn’t want to admit that to his own macho ego or LE JMO…

"It means a lot," he said. "To show that we have such a strong community here in Reche Canyon and Redlands. A lot of times, in our community, living in a nudist resort, we feel very isolated because we get judged. People do assume things about our lifestyle, and we're just people. We hurt just like everybody else, and this is a time where everybody's hurting."

In one of the many stories shared about the Menards, one community member came forward and said Stephanie loved playing bingo in the community.

They said from now, they plan on leaving an empty seat for the couple, right in the front row where Stephanie loved to sit.

This CNN article said the Michael Sparks will appear in court on Tuesday. Does anyone know if police will have to present evidence that he committed the crime? Last I heard police said he was Not co-operating with the investigation. Does anyone think there will be significant media coverage on Tuesday?
More on this neighbor IE.

Irene Engkraf, who identified herself as the concerned neighbor who called police, told reporters ahead of the Friday news conference that she and the couple usually attended Sunday church service together.

But last Sunday, the couple didn’t turn up for church and she saw their car sitting “abandoned.”

Using a spare key to enter the Menards’ home, Engkraf saw Stephanie Menard’s purse and both of the Menards’ phones. Then she called 911 and started calling hospitals, searching for news of her friends.

“It felt so odd not to have them sitting right next to me” at their usual Wednesday Bible study, she said. “But I know God’s with them. He’s with them wherever they are.”

I imagine Tuesday will just be his arraignment. No cooperation needed for that step of things.
