I haven't read up on the reason but my thinking is that he killed Black when he was on the run after Susan's murder and if he had nothing to do with killing Susan what was he suddenly running from and why would he kill Black - IF it really wasn't self defence?I don't understand "why" are they going thru Black's trial?? Why aren't they focusing on Susan??
I think this jury is getting to hear the details Black's jury heard as like an unbiased recounting of the evidence, rather than just being given the verdict (because it was so perverse IMO) and assuming Durst was just defending himself and therefore that wouldn't be anything to do with Susan's murder.
