"Funds raised by the February hockey game will be directed towards a number of Alberta charities...."

This fundraiser is to benefit children in need in Calgary: http://calgary.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=534049

Are there so many children in Calgary in need that the man behind the scenes (in NC) felt that that Calgary children needed something extra? Calgary supports the province of Alberta through oil, and the province of Alberta supports Canada through equalization payments: "Equalization payments happen via the federal treasury. As an example, a wealthy citizen in New Brunswick, a so-called "have not" province, pays more into equalization than a poorer citizen in Alberta, a so-called "have" province. However, because of Alberta's greater population and wealth, the citizens of Alberta as a whole are net contributors to Equalization, while the citizens of New Brunswick are net receivers of Equalization payments."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equalization_payments_in_Canada

"The game will be raising money for three local charities helping kids in need — the Flames Even-Strength Program, which helps families pay the rising cost of playing hockey; the Children’s Cottage, which supports parents at risk; as well as Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids Society, which provides free lunches to school-aged kids in need."

http://calgaryherald.com/news/local...e-planned-to-support-nathan-obrien-foundation

The Flames program makes sure that well fed children have extra money for sports, the Children's Cottage provides support to parents, and the Brown Bag business somewhat duplicates what is already in place in the schools. That is, schools identify children in low income families and provide free lunch through the cafeteria.

It seems to me that adding more money to what Calgarians already have, when they already have so much extra that they help support the entire country, seems like a joke, or a completely misdirected good intention. Surely there are people in every other part of the world that could benefit more.

Perhaps I am mistaken, but when I read about this fundraiser coming up, before it happened, it seemed to me that 'sponsors' were obtained, and they were 'fundraising' to support these various things. So how does this fundraising event tie in with the other thing that was given to the family, which was money to find causes for? I'm confused.

I think that the money from the NC man is the seed money that's used to book the hockey arena. The $5 tickets to watch the senior hockey players must be for paying off the arena rent and then the proceeds go back into the fund. The profit must then be split between costs (like a salary perhaps), and the three organizations that have been selected to receive the money. There must be some upside for the man in NC ... perhaps there's a special tax benefit for people that create funds for children in need in foreign countries. I'm completely speculating here, because I don't really understand how a NC fund to help children is needed in Calgary, and I don't understand how everyone profits ... but I suspect that everyone in the organization profits somehow.

The NC donor is also heavily invested with his church. He along with his siblings are on the Board of Trustees with the church. I wonder if the church funds are intermingled with this and what the congregation knows and feels about the donation. I hope the Donor family gives back to their community as much as they have to Calgary.

If the 'Nathan Foundation' monies which were donated by the NC fellow were to be used to fund fundraisers, to have the funds available to get them off the ground, even though the fundraisers are in fact also raising funds.. then I wonder why the amount donated would have been so large?

Was there any word after the fundraiser in regard to how much money was raised for the recipients?

In the interviews the OB's did when announcing the foundation, they said that the donor had followed their story and realized they were of deep faith and thus identified with the family and wanted to do something to help them. Despite wanting to remain anonymous, people quickly and easily figured out who he was and I believe it's been determined he's a philanthropist in his own community as well.

The hockey game has been an event that has been done in the past on a smaller scale by industry workers for various charitable intiatives, and JO mentioned in one of the interviews when the game was announced, that it was their coworkers at Cenovus that suggested they do it Nathan's honor this year. Cenovus is a title sponsor of the event. She also explained why they chose the recipients they did, as they related to Nathan and since it's his legacy they are preserving, I personally don't find it strange the money is being kept in the Calgary area.

People in this city were drawn to this story, and continue to be, (articles/interviews always top most read list) but that said, in light of Chief Hansen's admission to CBC that the likelihood of bodies being recovered is very small, I think maybe it's time for this thread to be closed until this case is at prelim hearing/trial or any significant development occurs. The family was quickly scrutinized on here for not doing more memorial initiatives imediately following the disappearance and now that they are, they are being criticized for how and questioned on disbursement. They can't win...which is sad when they've already lost SO much.

All MOO.

I work in major gifts and I like your post here beyond noting a thanks at the bottom. Alberta ranks as the highest donor in Canada averaging in at $2000 per every citizen. We have many great programs, organizations and foundations that fund smaller orgs beyond our municipal/provincial borders.

As for organisations profiting, well, that can occur beyond a monetary form,,, think services in kind, or better yet look at what Websleuths does. Non-profs like money yes, but pooling talent in whatever regard is of a value that money can't buy. There is a likelihood that the arena agreed to donate it's use and all other talents may have done the same for a charitable receipt acknowledging the value, or not. Not everybody does something for an exchange, sometimes people do things just to help.

I think all that is laid out about the hockey game and the local sponsorshipis is truly remarkable and a great gift for Calgary and Nathan and his family. I commend and support that 100%.

My comments were about the church and donor etc. are just me thinking out loud about how that may or may not be a questionable donation. It does not mean to snub what the foundation represents or the family. I would just hate to hear down the road that there was some other financial motive on behalf of the private donor, the donor's family finances, or church. If that did come to light it would be yet another blow to the family.

I didn't think the family was being scruitinized for how they are disbursing funds. I will have to read the posts again to understand that.

It's nice that the man in NC decided that children in Calgary needed something extra. What doesn't add up for me is that there are so many children all over the world in need. In terms of choosing a city where children need extra help, Calgary should be at the bottom of the list. Not only is Calgary the city responsible for providing Canada's equalization payments (supporting the entire country), but "Calgary listed as top Canadian city in ranking of economies worldwide".

There has to be something more to this than having religious beliefs because, in my humble opinion, religious beliefs would dictate that children that are genuinely in need should benefit, and that children that want sports equipment are not really in need.

research an employee of the man from NC and you will get your answer.

sports is an all inclusive type of play, and it is very expensive - even in Calgary - to equip kids to play with their friends.

hmm, for those thinking of things from this angle;

"“Their whole business plan... it seemed to have a lot of holes in it,” said Jim Nevada, whose family has owned land in the area for more than a century.

Nevada later stated when he asked questions of the developers “the info coming back... was a friggin' insult.”"

(IIRC Nevada was one of the neigbours of the Garlands who spoke with the media)

Found it...

I see a few new visitors to this forum. I am curious if you are discussing this case on another thread?

Lala, the trial in the Bosma case hasn't happened yet. The tiny bit of remains that were recovered were returned to the family. I think LE is not able to divulge much more to the family than they are to MSM, however if everything is to come out at trial, you would *hope* that for the sake of remaining family, LE would be able to break news to them gently, rather than having them hear about it publicly during trial in the same way that everyone else hears about it. Seems so cruel.

As bad as the details are or will be in any of these trials, I believe typically, even the most gruesome details are heard during trials. The jurors need to hear this information in order to know what happened and to garner the full impact of the heinous crimes and the suffering of the victims. Although it can be very traumatic for the jurors to hear the details, it's important IMO to assist them in rendering a verdict against the criminal being charged. Typically the Crown will let the families and loved ones present in the courtroom know what is about to be presented and it is up to the them whether they want to remain during testimony.

Sad but true.

MOO.
