Details of Disappearance:
Small was last seen at his office at the Grand Opera House in Toronto on December 2, 1919. He had met with his lawyer who left Small's office at approximately 5:30 pm. Small has never been seen since. No one who testified for the police claimed to have seen him leave his office, nor saw him in the surrounding area. The day before his disappearance, Small sold all his theatre holdings at a profit of CA$1.7 million.
Small's former secretary, John Doughty, disappeared on the same day as Small. Doughty was later seen at a bank in Canada where he was observed cashing in $100,000 in bonds. He was eventually located in the United States and extradited back to Canada to stand trial. He was convicted only of the theft of the bonds. No evidence was ever found he was responsible or had any knowledge of the disappearance of his boss, Ambrose Small.
