Death toll following Saskatchewan bus crash rises to 15: RCMP

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Curtis Zablocki says the investigation will be looking at all aspects of the crash to figure out what happened.

“This is a very involved investigation and due to the large amount of evidence, information and the number of victims this work will take some time. It’s too early to comment on the cause of the collision and we will continue to provide updates as this investigation progresses.”

He adds the initial investigation has determined the tractor trailer was going westbound on Highway 335 and the bus was travelling northbound on Highway 35.

Zablocki adds the truck driver was not injured and was detained by police before being released.

Streetview gives a good idea of how flat and wide open the area is. Roads are all straight, no sharp curves or blind turns.

it looks like such a nice drive.... :tears: the stop signs are on 335 (tractor trailer). bus was on 35.

There was a moment of silence at the start of the Rangers - Flyers game today. I think every game will start the same way tonight.

Darren Opp, president of the Hawks, said the semi T-boned the players’ bus, but police have not confirmed that.

Saskatchewan RCMP say it may be a long time before investigators can determine what caused the collision. The truck driver was not injured, was detained by oilice before being released.

Family of Ryan Straschnitzki confirmed the 18-year old survived but broke his back and can’t feel his lower extremities.

Scenes from the arena where they were supposed to play; it is deserted, with signs of support on the doors:

Trucks are the biggest hazard on the roads in Saskatchewan.

Moose are 2nd.

The land is pretty much flat - you know the joke, we can see the dog running away for days??? THAT'S SK.

ETA: I should add the roads are TARABULL, pot holes galore, and it is pretty scary considering how many BIG things (trucks, equipment) move around at highway speed.

I thought of that when I looked at streetview: "You can tell me that your dog ran away, then tell me that it took three days."

OMG

I think I see what could have happened.

First my sincere condolences for all victims and families. :(

I think I see what could have happened,

This is assuming if the accident occurred right at the intersection area of 335 and 35. If it happened somewhere else then disregard.

Ive been trying to determine exactly where the truck ended up.

Use the 2nd link and use Satellite view on it and start on 335 going East and start back before the intersection with 35.

Get down at street level like you are driving East on 335 and you first see a small stop sign "warning sign" which is hard to see. Then what follows is what I think is the real problem IMO.

They took the inexpensive way out and attached the actual stop sign to the street light pole which is practically right at the intersection instead of on its own pole and would normally be back some before the intersection some. Instead they took the inexpensive way out and attached the actual stop sign to a street light pole that happened to be there at the intersection. The problem with that is the light pole is right at the intersection with no time to stop if that is the only sign you spotted and had missed the warning sign. But more importantly is without its own pole I think it is harder to notice the stop sign.

Anyway I do think one of the vehicles was driving East on 335 because of where the Semi ended up on that curved little road that ties the 35 to 335 intersection.

Just guessing as to what I think may have contributed to the accident and guessing as to what could have happened.

I think when signs dont have their own poles it is harder to see them and they dont stand out as much. Sharing the light pole to use it as a stop sign pole is not a good idea imo.

No matter how it happened it is such a tragedy and my prayers are with the victims and families. :(

Here in Ontario on country roads ( I think I would call them this maybe someone can correct me) when speed limits are higher prior to stop signs approaching their are tractions or bumps? In the road a few times ahead of the signs. Is this common out west? I hope I make sense.

Rumble strips...yes they are lots of places in the west but I don't see any visible on google before that stop sign unfortunately, i could be wrong, only human and all.

ETA: i do see an amber flashing light with each stop sign at hwy #35

ETA2: if the trucker was coming from the east he maybe could have had sun in his eyes around 5pm...fwiw.

ETA3: 7:40 p.m.

Hockey world reacts to Humboldt Broncos tragedy
NHL teams are coming together in a show of support towards the junior hockey team. The Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets, Vegas Golden Knights, and Chicago Blackhawks have announced they will wear the Broncos nicknames on their jerseys or helmets Saturday night.

The team president lost his son. He's speaking on HNIC right now and fighting back tears. :(

And now Sheldon Kennedy IS crying. I shouldn't be watching.

I think I need to swear now. (Stepping aside.)

Damn. Sometimes life sucks. Sometimes life isn't fair!
