With all respect, my last name reflects only part of my heritage. You couldn't guess my ethnicity based on my name.

Well, can you find any mention of all that he is aboriginal? I've never read or heard anything to suggest it. And I live in Winnipeg, and the media has been saturated with discussion of his case.

I will defer to local knowledge, but not to assumptions based on his last name.

Well, with respect, you opened the discussion of his being aboriginal. Surely you must have read something somewhere -- or was it just an assumption? (If so, on what basis?)

See post above this one, plus I also posted earlier today about the smudging.

I come from an indigenous family and am a bit sensitive about people discounting it because "you can't tell" from my name.

Oh geez, came on to see where this story was and saw deceased. Sad, very sad.

Xanax is not on the "triplicate" prescription system in Manitoba. If your insurance is paying for the meds there is no way a pharmacy would be able to put through large quantities or have them filled too early. If paying cash...I think it's harder to double doctor now but maybe not if you go to different pharmacies and different doctors.
Hopefully the police can follow the trail of where this stuff was coming from and take down a source.

Xanax (alprazolam) is not part of the triplicate drug program, however every prescription filled for a Manitoba resident with a health card is "captured" to a central database. It checks for double doctoring, double pharmacy, duplicate drug, interactions, etc. He would not have been able to fill multiple prescriptions without this system giving the pharmacist an MY (duplicate drug) code which would need to be addressed before the pharmacist could fill it. FWIW.....

I assume a guilty plea from the accused, but I've been wrong on that before.

Memorial at the school for CN was put on hold after a fight between students http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manit...legiate-arrest-memorial-put-on-hold-1.3460941 Plans to put up a commemorative display for slain 17-year-old Cooper Nemeth at River East Collegiate were put on hold today after a knife was pulled on someone in front of the school.

Winnipeg police were called to the school Tuesday morning after two males, one with a knife, got into a fight. A 16-year-old was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon. No one was injured, police added.

Kelsey Schneider and a group of Nemeth's other closest friends were involved in the fight. The group was outdoors in front of the building when two teenage boys and one teenage girl stared them down and approached, according to Schneider.

I feared this case was going to result in something like this once I learned about the Rx drug use. I think some secrets are going to be exposed, and that does not bring out the best in people. Instead of pulling together in a time of mourning, the dark secrets make people pull apart, unless they are willing to face the secrets. I hope the adults in the community have the guts to delve deeper into what is happening in their schools and neighborhoods. It's going to hurt.

JMOpinion.

Very true. There's probably some parents cracking down on their kids. At least I hope so. There's probably a whole bunch that are paranoid that they are getting ratted out. I imagine there is some high tension. It's not like CN was the only kid dealing or using in the school.

I know this case well since I live in the area. Young males his age are very protective of each other
and generally do not tell on each other, even when they should. Also, there is a justified fear that drug dealers
will get revenge on anyone who talks.

Cooper was naïve and got in way over his head. He started dealing drugs, going into territory owned by other drug dealers.
He owed them money for drugs he had bought, but was not paying them back... saying he had no money. This ticked them
off. I heard more than one person was involved in his murder, and Cooper was made an example of ... of what happens when
you don't pay your drug dealer, double cross him or want to take away some of his clients. The police could only pin it on
one guy who dumped the body.

Will these evil drug dealers kill someone for a measly $500? Yes, they will!

Is this just rumour? I doubt it since I heard this story the day after Cooper disappeared,
before most people even knew he was dead.

I wish I could get more info (names of drug dealers) as I would definitely tell police.
The East Kildonan and Elmwood areas have more than their fair share of these
low-life dealers and gang members. However, I don't blame Cooper's friends and
teammates for not saying more because they are genuinely afraid for their lives if they squeal.
Also, some of these kids grew up together in the same grade since Grade 1 and on the same
teams. There is a fierce loyalty they share.
However, I would encourage them to give tips on Crime Stoppers, which is anonymous.
The others responsible for Cooper's death should be brought to justice too.

Yes, parents in the area, have a serious talk with your kids when they are 12 or 13 already.
Stay in touch with and know their friends and their parent/s. Give them curfews and only
give them more freedom as they mature. Have them read stories like those of Cooper.
Encourage your schools to do more teaching on the danger of drinking and drugs.

It might not hurt to get them involved in a church Kids Club when they are young so they
are open to a church Youth Group when they are older. There are churches that are progressive
and fun, and a whole church family will love your children and help them mature in morals and character.
When I look at the churched kids in the area, honestly, as adults now, they are doing a lot better than many of those
who never learned that there is a purpose in life greater than oneself.

Not that you have to be a Christian to lead a good life!! I'm just saying give your child a chance at
a supportive community, a place to belong, whatever the faith. There are other clubs too that can help
your child grow.
