The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) is keeping hope alive that a key member of their staff and her son will be found safe.

The Saskatoon Police Service said 48-year-old Dawn Dumont Walker’s red Ford F-150 and personal belongings were found near Chief Whitecap Park, just south of the city around 9 a.m. on Monday.

Walker is the executive operating officer at the FSIN and has been missing along with her 7-year-old son Vincent Jansen.

FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron said Walker is diligent in her communication with them and her staff, so they knew something was wrong.

The FSIN have issued their own Amber Alert, designed for dissemination amongst Native communities as the case didn’t meet the criteria for a police Amber Alert. Evidently Ms Walker was scheduled to attend the Pope’s address yesterday, and when she wasn’t heard from it raised alarm bells.

By Monday, police had uncovered her red Ford F150 truck, her purse and a blanket laid out on the riverbank at Chief Whitecap Park south of Saskatoon.

On Tuesday morning, Walker’s sister Patricia Dorion made an emotional plea along with her family, asking for anyone with information on the pair’s whereabouts to come forward.

“This may not even be the location. But if anyone’s seen anything at all, please call and let us know (and) the RCMP know,” she said.

He added that police officers haven’t found indication of foul play so far, though the investigation is ongoing.

Walker has experienced domestic violence, FSIN Vice-Chief Heather Bear said. However, Bear declined to make any allegations.

“It’s just not about going fishing one day and going missing,” she said.

This is a really popular dog beach very close to the city (5 min out). I would be very surprised if nobody else saw them there. On a nice day there will be 50-100 people there, especially on the weekends. to get to the beach you have to hike through the forest for about 10 min. The river is flowing and many people drown in it every year. It’s also quite deep near this beach and it can tow you under.

Yes, her purse was found and turned in on Saturday, which I assume is typically busy. Hopefully that means someone saw them there.

Dawn Dumont Walker, on top of serving as the Executive Operating Officer for the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations for the last nine years, is also an accomplished author, journalist, and comedian.

As an MP for the Liberal Party in Saskatoon-University, she said she would take a 'family first' approach.

“I'm a single mom, and I really appreciate the investment (the federal government) made into daycare and supporting families, and making sure women can continue working,” said Dumont Walker.

“I think it's really important that all of the COVID benefits that we put in place are going to be kept in place. When you invest in families, you invest in the economy.”

Dawn Walker said moving to a position as a Liberal MP would give her an opportunity to impact meaningful change, as more Indigenous need to be represented in government. One of the issues she's most passionate about is climate change.

“It's very important to me. We've gone through a summer of plus 34 degrees – the hottest summer on record. I think it needs to be addressed in a serious way, and I think the Liberals have the ability to do that,” she said.

Dumont Walker said the carbon tax is a good step, but Canada needs to start investing in and transitioning to more green jobs.

She also believes the Liberals are in a good position based on how leadership navigated the constant challenges during the pandemic.

“Most people are really happy with how Trudeau handled the pandemic, with daily news briefings, keeping us informed every day. And people like the way Dr. Theresa Tam was forthright and direct. She made things simple. And they kept children in the loop, who were scared during the pandemic. That's what I've been hearing from people I've been talking to.”

''Last night, south of Saskatoon, a candlelight vigil was held for missing Federation of Sovereign Indian Nations CEO Dawn Dumont, also known as Dawn Dumont Walker, and her seven year old son Vincent. They have been missing for five days.

Dumont was last seen at a business in Saskatoon, last Friday. It’s been reported by members of the FSIN that Dumont was traveling to Edmonton to see Pope Francis. Her suitcase, and personal affects were found at her home, and her Red F150 truck was found in Chief Whitecap Park along the bank of the South Saskatchewan river.

At a news conference yesterday Dumont’s Sister Patricia Dorian gave an passionate plea for more information from the public.

“If anyone has seen anything at all, please let us know, or let the RCMP know”

RCMP Staff SGT Greg Abbott said the search is focused on the area near where the truck was located – using water and air search teams. Though no evidence of foul play has been found – the FSIN is not ruling it out.''

''A very active figure for the rights of First Nations in Saskatchewan (she is chief of operations at the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations of Saskatchewan), Dawn Walker is also a well-known author whose novels are translated in Quebec by Daniel Grenier and published by Hannenorak . The translation of his novel Rose’s Race (Rose’s Run) was nominated for the Governor General’s Award in 2019.''

Saskatoon police are asking the public for video or dash-camera footage as they intensify the search for Dawn Walker and her seven-year-old son, Vinnie Jansen.

Walker, 48, who is well known in the Indigenous and literary communities, was last seen on Friday evening at a business on the 300 block of Owen Manor.

On Monday, RCMP located Walker's truck at Chief Whitecap Park, near the Riverside Country Club. Some of Walker's personal items were found nearby, but there was no trace of her or her child.

Police said Wednesday they are seeking video of the park area from 6:30 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday.
