This appears to be written by the father.

Meet the Stephan family; this is their story of grief, faith in God and fighting for what is right.

This blog is absolutely disgusting. Boohoo we have to sell our quads to pay for a lawyer. And of course nothing is ever their fault. Ezekiel was doing just fine with all those herbs. It was totally the ambulances fault. And even after being brain dead, they let us try herbs in the hospital! He was on his way to supposedly making a full recovery until the anti-natural agenda made them pull his life support unnecessarily. Call me skeptical. [emoji849]

The father wrote a letter addressed to the jury....

"The floodgates have now been opened and if we do not fall in line with parenting as seen fit by the government, we all stand in risk of criminal prosecution.
"May heaven help us all!"

oh, and crown resorted to "deception" and "trickery".

Talk about blaming others. Talk about being paranoid. Talk about ignoring common sense. Talk about not taking responsibility for the death of your child. I think they hate authority more than they love their children.

These people don't deserve to have children! grrrr!!!! :banghead:

It seems that this couple believes that they know better than medical doctors and medicine, and even after the guilty verdict they refuse to accept that they made a bad choice that resulted in a child's death. They are trying to make a human rights argument where they should be allowed to do whatever they want regardless of consequences.

Clearly they need more time to really think this through, so jail is probably the best sentence for them.

These two are still in denial despite the guilty verdicts. I hope they both get the maximum sentence, but I doubt that will happen.

Sentencing arguments for a southern Alberta couple found guilty of failing to provide the necessaries of life to their toddler, who died of bacterial meningitis four years ago, were temporarily halted today after the mother claimed the boy's autopsy report had been falsified.

The Crown interrupted part of Collet Stephan's testimony Thursday in Lethbridge Court of Queen's Bench when she made reference to the document.
Her lawyer, Shawn Buckley, said he had no idea she had planned to make such a statement.

I hope the presence of these misguided anti-vaxxer people (see BBM) will weigh in the judge's decision to give both parents jail time. Ezekial's parents are in denial and using his death to advance their misguided and unscientific cause. Maybe a couple of years in jail will put things into perspective for them. :moo:

A southern Alberta couple found guilty of failing to provide the necessaries of life for their 19-month-old son will be sentenced today, more than four years after his death from bacterial meningitis.

On Thursday, the court heard a video interview between David Stephan and the producers of the documentary "Vaxxed," in which he criticized the justice system for targeting his family.

He called it a "parental rights issue," blamed the media and called for public support at a rally outside the courthouse today.

I'm trying to include the tweets, but I'm having issues. He gets 4 months in jail, 2 years probation. She gets 3 months house arrest, 3 years probation. At least he is going to jail, but I consider these sentences to be too lenient. I'm glad that the Judge could see that he was more interested in blaming everybody else for his son's death, instead of showing remorse and taking responsibility for his poor choices and negligence. Hopefully after this ordeal, we'll never hear from the Stephan family ever again.

These are some of the tweets from Erin Collins (CBC News):
David #Stephan receives stiffer sentence than his wife due to greater moral culpability.

Judge says David #stephan has deflected responsibility and has demonstrated a complete lack of remorse for his actions.

Agreed the sentences are too lenient - it's rather amazing imo, that if one kills a family member how much more lenient the sentence is - jmo from reading such cases over the years.

Abhorrence to a parent neglecting their child in such a manner is missing - don't get the thinking at all on sentencing - hardly a deterrent for the future with other parents - or even the same parents.

snippets of remorse from the parents, probably because they did get sentenced, but it's something:
"Looking back at it, had I known that it could possibly end up in this situation I would not have put my child at risk," he told court Thursday in the pre-sentence statements.
"There is nothing I wouldn't give up to bring him back."
Collet Stephan said her only purpose in life is to be a mother.
"My children are everything to me and I'm everything to my children," she said, sobbing. "I am incredibly sorry I did not take him to the hospital. I just loved him so much."

JMO but it's really easy to know it could end up like this. It's also super easy to know what you're supposed to do instead.

Yeah, I think even small children realize that maple syrup and sandwich ingredients are not medicine.

New trial set for couple who appealed their conviction in son’s meningitis death

A new trial has been set for an Alberta couple who successfully appealed their conviction in the meningitis death of their son to the Supreme Court.

A four-week trial by judge alone for David and Collet Stephan will begin June 3, 2019 in Lethbridge.

The Stephans were found guilty in 2016 of failing to provide the necessaries of life to 19-month-old Ezekiel, who died in 2012.

Their trial heard evidence that they treated the boy with garlic, onion and horseradish rather than take him to a doctor.

The father was quoted as saying that he was hoping that a new trial would bring out the 'real criminals'. When the reporter asked him who he thought were the 'real criminals' he replied, "We'll have to wait and watch."

Again, taking no personal responsibility for the death of his child.

He also said they were vindicated. Just because they have a new trial doesn't mean they are vindicated.

I agree- he's kind of an arrogant man and thinks he knows what's best, feeling superior even, if I may say that ,IMO. Maybe like father, like son? blaming everyone else, because, my God, they couldn't be wrong- look at how wonderful they are.......please

Grandfather of dead toddler speaks out.

Feb 28, 2018

"Tony Stephan speaks out about the charging of his son and daughter in law in the death of his 19 month old grandson Ezekial last March. Authorities allege that David and Collet Stephan did not provide the necessities of life. Tony Stephan argues that a sudden unforeseeable illness and problems with the ambulance service led to the toddler’s death and that David and Collet were excellent parents."
