The school would however have at least a couple of communities plus the children from the reserve attending would it not. A town of 3000 people would not have a school with 900 children.

That is possible, and I think probably not uncommon. That would be about two adults to every child. Unfortunately poor people tend to have a lot of children. It wouldn’t surprise me of some communities might have two children to every adult.

“Her smile will light up the room on the darkest day,” said Sandie Janvier in a Facebook message, calling her the “sweetest caring person … We lost a loving sister today.”

La Loche Community School is for pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12, and houses approximately 900 students in two buildings

The annual suicide rate in the Keewatin Yatthe Regional Health Authority is the highest of any health authority in Saskatchewan. The area, which includes La Loche, Buffalo Narrows, Ile a la Crosse and other communities in the province’s northwest, averaged 43.4 suicide deaths per 100,000 people between 2008 and 2012. That’s more than triple the average annual provincial rate of 12.7 suicide deaths per 100,000

sorry I didn't see this earlier.... unfortunately, I would have to agree. It's such a remote community and it has had some issues before, just not to this degree. I cannot even imagine how they were able to handle this situation today, do they even have enough medical staff? Thank goodness for STAR's.

You have been here for 10 years..... are you a Rider fan yet? lol
Yes I bleed green lol

Deceased identified as Marie Janvier, Adam Wood and brothers Dayne and Drayden Fontaine

Don Herman, an uncle of Dayne and Drayden Fontaine, confirmed his nephews had been killed as he stopped by La Loche Community School Saturday morning to pray for his family.

"This is going to be in our hearts and in our life for the rest of our lives," Herman said, clutching a rosary. "They were quiet kids, loving kids.

"It's hard to talk about it. I thought I'd never see my family go through anything like this."

Adam was the best man in my co-workers wedding. He is described as a grand adventurer and gleefully mischievous. He lived life to the full.

The shooter is 17 years old and can not be named under the youth justice act. He is charged with 4 counts of first degree murder and 7 counts of attempted murder. http://thestarphoenix.com/news/local-news/right-now-la-loche-is-devastated-2 The article identifies Dayne as being 17 I believe this is incorrect. His FB pg says he was born in 95, his age would be 20.

If he can't be named, it's because he is a minor. So he is under probably under 18. I wonder if they will ask to try him as an adult though, and in that case, they will release his name.

A lot of kids lied about their age on FB so they could sign up before they were 13! (source: I'm a parent of brats, and I see a lot of their friends have the wrong age LOL)

The reporting is quite confusing. Some say he shot two brothers (i.e. not necessarily his brothers) but others say he shot his two younger siblings. That wouldn't tally with Dayne being 20, but then both the killer and victim being 17 seems odd too. No-one's saying anything about the shooter in family posts on FB so maybe the former wording is correct?

I am also wondering whether he is a brother to the 2. I have noticed no 1 is talking on fb.

A 17-year-old male suspect has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder. The suspect will make a court appearance next week. He cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He has also been charged with one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm.

"Right when he walked in he took that shot, no second thoughts — he just shot him. Then I started running. I heard like five more shots before I got out of the school," he said.

Jackson said he told people to run, telling them there was a person with a gun.

"I'm guessing people didn't want to believe me so they stood there. I told a lot of people to run. Only two [listened]: my brother and one teacher," he said.

He described the suspect as "a silent guy."

"You barely see him around. He went for school or would go for bike rides with us at times. He was just a silent quiet guy. He doesn't talk about anything. He just sits there or walks around with us."

Has anyone noticed that the Fontaine's seem to be related to a lot of Janvier's on SM? I know in native communities most people are related.... So were they cousins with Marie? Or is this just a common last name and a coincidence with no actual blood relation? In a native community this small I wouldn't be surprised if they were cousins.

I've also noticed two students interviewed in different news articles both had the last name "Janvier" but there was no mention of them being related to Marie. Mind you, I read those articles before the victims names were released. May just be an incredibly common last name there, but that usually means people are related and know each other.

“To have the lives and the futures of these students and staff cut short by this unspeakably horrible event is really, simply unimaginable. It’s unimaginable anywhere. It’s, obviously for us in Saskatchewan, it’s very much hard to believe and surreal right here in our province,” said Wall.

The province says flags have been lowered at the Saskatchewan legislative building and all other government buildings.

The mayor said the RCMP told him the 17 year old had shot 2 of his own siblings .Kevin Janvier said his 23-year old daughter, Marie, a teacher, was one of the victims.

RCMP told him the gunman is believed to have first shot two of his own siblings before killing Janvier’s daughter. He didn’t know if the shooter personally knew his daughter.

“He shot two of his brothers at his home and made his way to the school,” http://aptn.ca/news/2016/01/23/it-a...atchewan-community-devastated-after-shooting/

This may have been stated already but this is the first chance I have had to read closely about this very sad case.

So the two brothers were killed before he went to the school?

Could the shooter have lived in the same home as the two brothers? Could the two brothers be family members of the shooter?

During some of these school shootings the shooter would first murder some of his family members before coming to the school is why I wonder if the same could have happened here?

tia

It such a tragedy no matter the dynamics.

IMO

This is sort of O/T trivia but I thought it was interesting.

In the US one of the first mass shootings that happened at a school was done by a female back in 1979. I found this information while looking for information on this mass shooting case. Its interesting to me because many are under the impression that school shooters have been males.

Here are a few examples of female school shooters. In 1979, 16-year-old Brenda Spencer committed a sniper attack at Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego.

In 1988, Laurie Dann, age 30, shot young children in Hubbard Woods Elementary School in Winnetka, Illinois.

At Penn State University in 1996, 19-year-old Jillian Spencer, who was trained in the Army Reserve as a sharpshooter, opened fire on random students.

Latina Williams, a 23-year-old nursing student at Louisiana Technical Institute, killed two classmates in 2008.

Finally, in 2010, Professor Amy Bishop shot six colleagues in the biology department at the University of Alabama.
