Youth centre planned to honour Hilary Bonnell
A group of teens from the Esgeoopetitj First Nation in northeastern New Brunswick have started raising money to build a youth centre in memory of Hilary Bonnell.
Bonnell, 16, was killed after she disappeared Sept. 5, 2009, from the Esgenoopetitj First Nation, commonly known as Burnt Church. She had attended a party on the reserve with friends the night before and was last seen walking along Highway 11 at about 7:30 a.m. AT.
Two months later, her body was found in a heavily wooded area in Tracadie-Sheila. Her cousin, Curtis Bonnell, 29, has been charged with first-degree murder in her death.
Shortly after the teen's death, her mother Pamela Fillier said she wanted to open a youth centre in memory of her daughter. Now, some of Hilary's friends are taking steps to make that happen.
