Youth centre planned to honour Hilary Bonnell

A group of teens from the Esgeoopetitj First Nation in northeastern New Brunswick have started raising money to build a youth centre in memory of Hilary Bonnell.

Bonnell, 16, was killed after she disappeared Sept. 5, 2009, from the Esgenoopetitj First Nation, commonly known as Burnt Church. She had attended a party on the reserve with friends the night before and was last seen walking along Highway 11 at about 7:30 a.m. AT.

Two months later, her body was found in a heavily wooded area in Tracadie-Sheila. Her cousin, Curtis Bonnell, 29, has been charged with first-degree murder in her death.

Shortly after the teen's death, her mother Pamela Fillier said she wanted to open a youth centre in memory of her daughter. Now, some of Hilary's friends are taking steps to make that happen.

Dance to benefit Hilary Bonnell fund

Proceeds to go toward establishing 'Hilary's House' youth centre in Esgenoopetitj First Nation

ESGENOOPETITJ - A benefit dance in memory of a slain Miramichi teenager is being held this weekend in the First Nations community where she went missing.

Shortly after Pamela Fillier received word that her daughter, 16-year-old Hilary Bonnell, was found dead in a wooded area outside of Tabusintac in November, the grieving mother insisted she wanted her daughter's name to live on.

Fillier said her vision was to arrange for the creation of a youth centre in Esgenoopetitj First Nation where children could go to socialize in a safe, secure environment and receive advice from counsellors on staff.

That process starts tomorrow night at the Esgenoopetitj Band Hall, where a benefit dance will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight, with all proceeds going toward the youth centre, which will be known as 'Hilary's House.'

The push for a youth centre has the full support of District 8 RCMP, with Insp. Roch Fortin noting that the agonizing three-month search for Hilary resulted in a closer relationship between law enforcement officials and the First Nation community.

Burnt Church slaying gets hearing date

Last Updated: Monday, March 22, 2010 | 3:46 PM AT

A preliminary inquiry for a northern New Brunswick man accused of killing his 16-year-old cousin has been set for September — a year after the teenager disappeared.

Curtis Bonnell, 29, of the Esgenoopetitj First Nation will return to Miramichi provincial court on Sept. 21. Three days have been set aside for the hearing.

Bonnell is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Hilary Bonnell, who disappeared Sept. 5 from Esgenoopetitj, commonly known as Burnt Church.

Bonnell was charged Dec. 8 and has remained in custody at the Moncton Detention Centre.

His case had been adjourned twice to give the defence more time to review the evidence.

Bonnell is also facing charges of sexual assault, unlawful confinement and resisting arrest in connection with an unrelated incident involving a 17-year-old girl, identified only as MAWS. The alleged assault took place just days before police found Hilary's body.

A preliminary hearing was held in that case on March 18 and Bonnell was committed to stand trial in Court of Queen's Bench. A date has not yet been set.

The trial is beginning now. Finally. Justice is coming Hilary. Apparently Curtis Bonnell grabbed her at around 8 a.m. on Sept 5th 2009. Hilary had sent out three texts to her cousin at around the same time telling her that she was very scared.

Bonnell travelled down Micmac Road to visit his sister at about the same time Hilary was walking there, said Richards.

Hilary was about 30 minutes from her destination, Richards said. Her last communication were the three text messages to Haley's cell phone, which was seized by police.

The jury will see some graphic pictures, Richards warned during his opening remarks.

The trial is expected to last four to six weeks.

About 45 witnesses will be called, including Hilary Bonnell's parents, Pam Fillier and Boyd Bonnell.

The jury was then shown surveillance video from a local gas station that showed a girl enter and leave the store between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. that day. Fillier identified the girl as Hilary.
The video also showed a man arrive at the station about three minutes later and drive off in a red pickup truck. Fillier identified him as Curtis Bonnell.

Hilary's cousin only got her texts five days after they were sent because her phone needed to be recharged. :(

WTF???

He didn't choke her, hack her up or unclothe her, he said on Nov. 9, 2009, after leading police to a remote wooded area near Tabusintac, where they later discovered Hilary's buried body.
He couldn't remember how she died, he said during the videotaped police statement, which was played Monday for the jury at his first-degree murder trial.

He doesn't know how he killed her? He didn't raper her? He has already raped other girls as posted earlier in this thread. This guy is a liar and such a danger to any community. Lock him up indefinitely please, he's a dangerous offender. JMO

He didn't even tell his elder what he did to her.

Curtis Bonnell continues to say things like "I don't know" and "I can't remember". He also has talked of spiritually, often in a confusing way.

RCMP did get a spiritual elder to meet with Bonnell in person and that elder is trying to convince Bonnell to give police the details they want to hear. At one point the elder even asked Curtis Bonnell to "stop playing the drama game."

This guy is a piece of work and a piece of ****. I will also add liar.

Curtis Bonnell told police he killed his first cousin Hilary Bonnell in his backyard after they had sex on the ground, a jury heard on Tuesday.

Bonnell said they fought because Hilary, 16, wanted $100 in exchange for the sex and he refused.

He said he covered her mouth to stop her from yelling and the next thing he knew, she was dead.

He goes from not remembering to this pitiful scenario which has Hilary as a prostitute and deserving to his anger to be killed???? Putting the blame on the victim sucks Curtis. Shame on you.

Hilary Bonnell's body was encased in a "clay cocoon" in the fetal position, the jury at Curtis Bonnell's murder trial heard on Thursday.
Police found blood at Bonnell's house, Gould told the Miramichi courtroom. He also collected a blood sample from Bonnell's truck, he said.

She has a cut near her eyebrow, below a piercing.

And while she is clothed, wearing a black hoodie, flowered blouse, blue bra and a jean shirt, she does not have on any panties or shoes.
