GUILTY Canada - Joanne MacKenzie, 23, Peterborough ON, 02 July 2011

This article debunks a few myths surrounding the case. I don't know for sure, but, I do not think it was JM's remains that were discovered on Tuesday. I thought it was Wednesday. It was something else LE discovered at noon on Tuesday, I think.

I suspect that it was electronic information, via phones/video/computers that the OPP had quick access to, that broke the case open. Pure speculation.

When she still hadn’t turned up by Monday morning the service’s criminal investigations branch took over.

Things started to change Tuesday, at 12:30 p.m., he said.

“We started to gather evidence that there was something criminal that had taken place,” he said.

There was also some indication that MacKenzie had travelled outside city limits, and Farquharson said they decided to call in the OPP.

“If there’s any feeling at all that this person has left our jurisdiction, we call the OPP,” he said.

That increased the resources available to police, he said, and it also brought the provincial police on board during the earliest stages of the investigation.

Farquharson said it’s likely police wouldn't have discovered what happened without the help from both agencies.

Both services are still working the case, though the OPP have taken the lead on the criminal prosecution.

Farquharson said at least 27 officers have been involved in the case since MacKenzie was first reported missing.

Wondergirl, you are absolutely right about her being found Wed. and not Tuesday...my bad. :)
As you said, it could have been electronic information (video surveillance, phone, etc) that LE discovered at noon on Tuesday. We have been told very few details; we don't even know if she was carrying a cellphone with her neither. It could have been an eye witness or just the fact that lots of people knew who she was going to meet that day. From what I read on FB today, he grew up in the area close to where she was found, but now I am not sure if that is where he lives now
So it could just have been LE being very thorough, like leaving no stone unturned, that prompted them to want to 'search' that area/property?:
“If there’s any feeling at all that this person has left our jurisdiction, we call the OPP,” he said.

In any case, I'm so glad the OPP was called in, and that both forces worked together and found her and got the perp to confess.

What intrigues me the most is the "two crime scenes" . They are already mentioning a 'bungalow' so I am wondering if the location she was found is considered the second crime scene :waitasec:

Also, how did she get to Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield Township? A car? could the car be the other crime scene?

I sure hope the little girl did not witness anything; I believe she is 6 yo. :(

all just my speculation, MOO

I'm not sure if they are two separate crime scenes.. The Youngs Point & Preston road intersection is in the township posted in the first article..

I dont know if this is the right bungalow, but this is a bungalow at the intersection listed above.

Thanks Ella, that's the exact same location I also got. Found these images of the 'bungalow' and there is also a video clip (which for some reason I cannot view :( )

I am so sorry for Joanne's family and friends.

Not too far from Peterborough in Uxbridge, another woman's body has been found. Does anyone know who is also missing from that area? This is scary.

Police believe it was the body of 18-year-old Margarita Shumakova of Toronto that was discovered Friday night by a resident walking along Concession Road #8 between Wagg Road and Reid Road, a sparsely populated area surrounded by fields.

Someone in the FB group posted a link to the news video with McGregor in it and I managed to pull off these two images. Cleaned them up a bit in PSP but they're not the greatest. I thought you would appreciate them. RIP joanne.

Thanks RavensTears

On the 00:39 mark they show LE looking inside that outhouse? shed? shack? (don't know how to call that). IMO that could be where Joanne's body was found :( or perhaps where the murder took place?

Margarita Shumakova , 18, was last seen July 3rd. at approx. 1 am in Toronto ~ her mother (who doesn't speak much English) reported her missing to Toronto Police after five days had passed without any word from her daughter.
Haight said the distraught woman wasn’t sure how long she was suppose to wait.
“And she had called a bunch of her daughter’s friends and they weren’t overly concerned,” he said.

very sad :( ~~~ Just made a thread for Margarita ~~~

This happened down the street from me - about 2 miles in the country! Unfortunately, I was not able to come here and post any comments. The police were at the scene for many days - hubby noticed them there early Wednesday morning (around 5 am) on his way home from work and then on Thursday, he had a heart attack so my time was spent at the hospital for several days. They were still there the following Tuesday when I last drove by.

My daughter and I dropped off some bottled water to the officers on duty there on the Saturday following the discovery - it was very hot and I remember my Dad having to suffer through these investigations (he was a policeman in Toronto). Some locals complained about the detour but I was thankful for them being so thorough. It was quite a large area that they had cordoned off and the property does back onto farmland.

Glad they were able to make an arrest so fast! FYI, Lakefield is a beautiful small town and policing duties are covered by the Lakefield/Peterborough OPP.

From April 2015:

http://www.mykawartha.com/news-stor...ing-to-jail-for-life-for-first-degree-murder/

Robert McGregor has been found guilty of first-degree murder and will spend life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years for killing his ex-girlfriend, Joanne MacKenzie...

In the end, all 12 jurors believed the story presented to them by Crown attorney Lisa Wannamaker. Mr. McGregor planned the murder of Ms MacKenzie and lured her to a field near his home on 10th line in Selywn on July 2, 2011, before stabbing her 15 times, including a fatal wound to the neck...

In her closing statements, Ms Wannamaker highlighted that Ms MacKenzie had cut and changed her hair colour so Mr. McGregor wouldn’t be obsessed with her. She rarely responded to multiple text messages from Mr. McGregor in the months leading up to her death. She even wrote in her journal that McGregor would hurt her and take their daughter if she started dating someone else.
