I don't feel that the Canadian Forces owe us any explaination! RW was a mastermind at hiding his double life. Absolutly NO ONE suspected anything to suggest such a 2nd life was occuring. What do you expect the Canadian Forces to do? What could they have done to detect this? No one can prevent this from happening, it has happened in the past and Im sure it will continue to happen in our future.

The Canadian Forces is not at fault just because one twisted soul was in a uniform! We could blame this on society, why did no one catch him, why were neighbours not watching out for each other, why did people not lock their doors/windows, why why why, the list could go on and on, but we get nowhere putting blame on others.

Society did not place Russell Williams in the position of being a colonel and commander of CFB Trenton, home of the Canadian Forces Air Warfare Centre. I am interested in what will be done in the future by the Canadian Forces. No information is forthcoming. No explanations have been made. So the question remains.

We are all entitled to our opinions. I'm stating mine.

DO NOT BICKER!

It is fine for one to think the armed forces should address the issue and it is fine for one to think there is nothing to address. Don't bicker about it. State your opinion, make your suggestions, move on.

In the meantime, Deschamps said the Canadian Forces will continue to reassess how they recruit and test military personnel.

"But in the end, we feel this individual is an aberration. It truly was, and therefore our system is still sound, and we will keep looking for improvements, but at this moment, there is nothing fundamental that we are going to change."

I couldn't agree with you more FF. The only person to blame for what happened is RW himself, as he was the one who committed the crimes.

His own wife didn't see it coming, his best friend of 30 years was completely, and utterly shocked, his co-workers were shocked.

Not really sure that there is any kind of testing (nor will there ever be) to ensure this doesn't happen again. There is NO way of predicting this. This man would easily pass a psych test, I'm sure of it.

How could there be?! He was a master. The best shrinks in the world will be clamouring to see if they can figure him out, and they won't. No one knows why except RW himself - and I'm betting he doesn't know himself. We will never know why he did what he did.

This isn't related to Rw but I thought some of you might find it interesting and I guess this guy is hoping for a Hybristophiliac.

I thought inmates didn't have access to the internet!!!

My guess is that the answer lies in Wondergirl's quote:

Prisoners in the segregation unit get an hour outside their cell for exercise. For the other 23 hours a day, they are locked in their cells. They can watch television — if they buy a television. They can read and have writing materials. But there’s no access to computers or the Internet.

So, access to computers is either denied only to those being in the segregation unit, or the distinction arises between a maximum security prison (Kingston Pen.) and a medium security one, such as Warkworth.

Just speculating here.

Russell Williams and the question of evil

The experts, as we are repeatedly told, are baffled when they come across somebody like Williams, a man who defies the existing categories and analysis.

He didn't start to "act out" his fantasies until his forties. No killing of animals when he was a teenager, no aberrant behaviours.

He effectively led a double life, which only Robert Louis Stevenson's 19th-century fiction about a split personality — the rational Dr. Jekyll and murderous Mr. Hyde — could foretell

I'd like to know how they know this. Is it because he told someone so? My personal opinion is that there probably were aberrant behaviours that were ignored/covered up. JMO though.

For the immense shame that Williams brought to his uniform, he cannot be allowed to sully its public meaning, to rub his filth off on it. He does not deserve that kind of influence or victory.

It is Comeau whose memory should be the one to define what the uniform represents, not the depravity of her killer.

Comeau defines the values and the very best of the Canadian Forces in so many ways, and she exhibited those qualities in what were undoubtedly the absolute worst moments of her life.

Her bravery is breathtaking; she was filled with courage in the face of indescribable terror.

Even in the face of certain death, Comeau refused to give up, or give in. Her sheer will to live and defy the darkness that was enveloping her is truly incredible.

She fought her killer bloodied and battered, yet no matter how badly Williams beat her, he could not crush her strength of character.

Jessica Lloyd grew up in a military family, knowing the uniform as a symbol of protection and honour. Lloyd was so loved that she was saturated in warmth and her tenderness breaks through even the most wretched moments of her ordeal.

It is not Williams' abuse that defined who Lloyd was, or our memory of her. And it is not his right to take away the honour and pride her family should feel for their service.

The uniform did not commit these crimes -- the man in the uniform did.

Who knows? It's hard to say. All we can go by is what he says, right?

But judging by his treatment of his cats (they were apparently their "babies") I'd be hard pressed to believe he terrorized animals.

Does anyone know if he killed or injured any of his victims pets? I don't remember seeing it mentioned anywhere - except that MFC's cat was looking at him when he was hiding by her furnace...

I don't know what if anything could have been done by his employer to prevent these atrocities -- however,

I recall having to take a written psychological evaluation / assessment / test as part of an interview to work in a grocery store. I passed. My best friend, did not. She has never committed a single offence and leads a life so dull that turtles would probably pass her in a race without trying (lol). I'd be flabbergasted if she ever did anything strange, let alone illegal! In fact, of the two of us, despite my passing the evaluation, I would describe myself as more of a risk taker than her!!

This makes me wonder though, if I had to take a test and pass it just to stock shelves and operate the cash machine -- then what testing if any was RW or other members in high ranking positions subjected to prior to being hired?

I would find it amusing if there were NO testing in place for these higher up positions, which are mandatory parts of entry level interviews in some grocery stores. LOL.

I don't recall there ever being any mention of victims' pets other tha MFC's cat.

Also, it was reported

Neighbours say Williams loves animals and likes holding his cat Rose in his arms. While mowing the lawn, he would reportedly examine the lawn for frogs, dragging his feet through the grass so he wouldn't harm them."

I suspect that any psychological evaluations rw had ,he would have been well prepared for and "pass" with flying colours.Put it this way, considering his computer savvy and connections, I doubt it would have been too hard for him to discover the best responses to give. Also, if it turns out that he has a "split personality",the "good russ" might have all the right answers.I wonder if his initial applying for the RCMP, was a case of rw dipping his toes in the water to see if there are any ripples, before approaching a military career. I guess he underestimated his opponent in LE.

This has been the largest Canadian crime story since PB and KH. It may even have surpassed that case in notoriety and press coverage and will forever be documented in the history of this country.

Over the past eight months, there have been thousands upon thousands of articles written about RW and his crimes. While I don’t fully trust the media, I have to believe that at least some of those reports were thoroughly researched and accurately reported. There have been several erroneous “facts” published, but far more had been verified by LE and by people who knew RW personally.

In these many reports, we have heard from LE (past and present); military representatives (past and present); lawyers; several psychological experts; media pundits; victims; families of victims; RW’s ex-friends, neighbours, and co-workers; and just about everyone else willing to speak to the media. A wealth of information is out there for us.

It is very hard for me to believe that any stone has been left unturned in trying to uncover anything regarding this monster, especially if it were scandalous and incriminating. The media has sources, resources, time, and motivation to dig deeply into this man’s past. Any reporter worth his salt would consider it a major feather in his cap to find even the most minor, previously-undiscovered fact. It would be unrealistic to think that at least some of them have not done their utmost to do so and to publish those findings.

And yet, all reports (from LE, from shrinks, from previous acquaintances and friends) maintain steadfastly that RW’s crimes began three years ago. Not one shred of evidence, or even speculation, has suggested that he had committed crimes before those revealed by LE. All agree that while this is highly unusual, anomalies exist and that this case is unique.

I understand that it’s difficult to leave emotions out of sleuthing here at WS. These heinous crimes lend themselves easily to form personal opinions and speculate. However, in a story of this magnitude, with as much research and coverage as has occurred, I have to trust the facts that have been presented to us … so MANY of them. Personally, I feel it’s a waste of my time to continue to sleuth this case unless more verified facts come to light. I am not discounting that possibility, but until that time, I consider it over and done. The creep has confessed and he is in prison for the rest of his miserable life. I’m satisfied with that. Unfortunately, there are many more unsolved cases left to sleuth, which is how I’ll be spending the rest of my WS time.

This is all JMO.

Thank-you so much for this article.

The bolded sentiments above represent exactly what I felt in reading the reports of the crimes against these two women, and it is wonderful to see them in print.

They are worth repeating.

Russell Williams, and things that go bump in the night

Sometimes, there is a monster in the closet.

This thought came to me when I awoke this morning, breathless. The nightmare had seemed so real: Serial killer Russell Williams had escaped custody. In the dream, we had tracked the manhunt for him in the newsroom as he appeared to be returning to Ottawa. At one point, I woke to see him standing in the corner of my bedroom. I screamed.

But it was just a dream.

Ontario Police negligent in Williams case

By Bronwyn Eyre, The StarPhoenix October 27, 2010

Massicotte now intends to sue Williams and is considering suing the OPP. "So many people want me to shut up," she says. "The Crown doesn't want me to say a word and the police, of course, don't want me to go on and on about their mistakes. They have not apologized. They don't care."

In the Williams case, an earlier "security alert" could have benefited many. Primarily, of course, it would have encouraged women to be more vigilant and to ensure they were adequately securing their houses at night.

Even Williams' wife, who's not implicated in her husband's horrors, might have reflected on his long absences -- and been more curious about the large number of (lingerie-filled) boxes in their basement and guest room -- had she heard updated reports about the underwear burglar, or worse, on the loose.

In all honesty, in the Belleville/Trenton area, you'd be hard pressed to find someone without some kind of attachment to the military. It's the largest Air Force base in Canada and employs a LOT of people.

Many retire from DND and settle in the Quinte region because it's so central to everything.

I really don't believe there's a connection - I'm sure that's an angle that has been thoroughly investigated by the OPP. I'm also sure there is a LOT of stuff that hasn't been released.
