Well this is odd, imo.
2 Toronto cops injured in altercation with man with a knife | Toronto Sun
Feb 02, 2021
''Toronto Police had been contacted by their counterparts in Peel regarding a missing person at 23 Westona St., which police described as a roominghouse. Peel officers went to the home and found some blood in the missing person’s unit and asked Toronto cops to assist, Toronto Chief James Ramer said at the scene.

“We made some efforts to locate that missing person, but were unsuccessful late yesterday evening,” he said.''

“At 11:15 a.m., they were in a common area of the residence and an individual in one of the rooms they didn’t previously know was occupied came out, said nothing to them and was armed with a knife and immediately attacked some of the officers.”

''Ramer said the officers restrained the man using a Taser. He was taken to hospital and is in custody.
A sergeant sustained two serious slash wounds and was being treated at Sunnybrook Hospital, Ramer said. The second officer sustained minor injuries.''

''Ramer said the missing person — Nathaniel Brettell, 56 — remains outstanding.''

Toronto Police Service :: News Release #49165
Case #: 2021-204256
''The Toronto Police Service is continuing to appeal for information from the public to help locate Nathaniel Brettell.

The 56-year-old was last known to be at home on Thursday, January 21, 2021, in the Westona Street and Dixon Road area.

He is described as 5'8, thin build, with receding grey hair and a white beard. At the time of his disappearance he was believed to be wearing a green, blue and white checkered shirt - the same shirt he is pictured in.

Officers have been carrying out extensive inquiries to find him and police are extremely concerned for his welfare. It is possible Nathaniel may be injured or in need of medical assistance.

Witnesses are urged to come forward or anyone who may have details about his whereabouts. In particular, any CCTV, dashcam or images from the area of Westona Street could prove vital in locating him.''

Toronto police 'extremely concerned' for the safety of missing Etobicoke man

The evening of Monday, Feb. 1, officers from Peel Regional Police attended an Etobicoke rooming house where Brettell is believed to reside after receiving a call from a complainant about a missing person.

The following morning, Interim Toronto Police Chief James Ramer said four officers from 23 Division – who also visited the house to do a wellness check – found blood in Brettell’s room.

“Officers have been carrying out extensive inquiries to find him. It is possible Nathaniel may be injured or in need of medical assistance,” Toronto police said in a Feb. 5 news release.

Investigators are urging witnesses or anyone who may have details about Brettell’s whereabouts to come forward. They especially want to talk to anyone who has CCTV, dashcam, or images from the area of Westona Street, which they said “could prove vital in locating him.”

While searching for Brettell, one of the home’s occupants allegedly emerged from a room with a butcher knife and attacked two Toronto police officers who were in a common area.

A sergeant, who has about 20 years of service, was seriously slashed twice. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

A constable, who has about a year of service, also suffered minor injuries.

Both officers are now recovering at home.

The injured officers were able to restrain the suspect, who has been identified as 33-year-old Ahmed Al Farkh, of Toronto, by using a taser. They also recovered the weapon.

Al Farkh, who was also transported to hospital, has been charged with two counts each of attempted murder and aggravated assault of a police officer, four counts of assault with a weapon, and one count each of weapons dangerous and assault intent to resist arrest. He had a Feb. 3 court appearance.

Missing person that cops were looking for when two officers were attacked was murdered: police
''On Feb. 2 police attended the rooming house where Brettell resided to conduct a missing persons investigation after being contacted by Peel Regional Police officers regarding the discovery of blood in his room.

During the course of that investigation, a man wielding a butcher knife came out of one of the rooms and allegedly attacked two officers without warning. One of the officers sustained two serious slash wounds as a result while the other officer sustained minor injuries.

The suspect, 33-year-old Ahmed Al Fark, was taken into custody at the scene and charged with 10 offences, including two counts of attempted murder.''

Missing man now subject of Toronto homicide investigation remembered by friend as ‘loyal and caring’
''Regan said Brettell had Asperger’s and suffered from depression and anxiety. He said due to his condition, Brettell liked to abide by a specific schedule and would have a long-standing “conference call” with his friend Amanda every Thursday.

Regan and Amanda reported Brettell missing after he didn’t make one of those calls. Regan said Brettell was notorious for losing his cellphone, so at first the two thought that may have been the case. However, when a few more days went by, Regan said they went to Brettell’s Etobicoke rooming house but no one answered the door.''

''When officers arrived at the rooming house, another man came out, armed with a knife, and attacked two officers. A sergeant was slashed multiple times and was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The other officer suffered minor injuries.''

Regan said Brettell reminded him of the character Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory.

“He had to have things in a particular way,” Regan said. “He didn’t like change.”

''Meanwhile a Facebook page was created by Brettell’s sister Lois Brettell, for anyone to post any information they may have.

Investigators asked any witnesses or anyone with information about Nathaniel to contact police at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477''.

Sister of missing Etobicoke man Nat Brettell refuses to give up hope he'll be found alive
"All Lois Brettell wants is for her brother Nat to be found alive.

“I believe the police are looking for somebody that is dead,” she said of her older brother Nathaniel, who went missing almost a month ago from central Etobicoke.''
They’re looking for a dead body, but I’m looking for a living one.”

''What makes this missing persons’ case especially concerning, and has prompted investigators to issue an appeal for information, is the fact that blood was found in Brettell’s bedroom on Tuesday, Feb. 2, almost two weeks after his disappearance.

Another wrinkle in this investigation is that while searching for Brettell in the house where he lived, another male resident attacked and stabbed two Toronto police officers. This individual – identified as 33-year-old Ahmed Al Farkh, of Toronto – has been arrested and charged.''

Opinion | These recent missing-persons cases resulted in bloodshed and death, but no answers
23 Feb 2021

Nathaniel Brettell, 57, vanished on Jan. 21, last seen at his home on Westona St., in the area of Dixon Rd. in Etobicoke. Police are now treating the case as a murder investigation.

He is considered the city’s 10th murder victim of 2021. But there’s no body.

Toronto police were contacted by their counterparts in Peel about the missing man. It’s not clear why police from Toronto’s 23 Division had been summoned to assist, two weeks after Brettell disappeared. The investigation brought them on February 2 to the rooming house where Brettell lived. The building was searched and other tenants interviewed. No trace of Brettell was found but the Toronto officers spotted blood during their probe of Brettell’s room, prompting them to issue an appeal for information.

When the officers, four of them, returned later that morning for further probing, they were attacked by an individual in the building’s common area. A man jumped out — apparently from a room police had believed unoccupied — and, apparently without provocation, without speaking a word, began stabbing the officers with a knife.

Police Chief James Ramer, arriving at the scene, told reporters the man had been Tasered to restrain him. A sergeant sustained two serious slash wounds, the second officer sustained less serious injuries. Both were treated at hospital and released.

I imagine investigators are talking with Ahmed Al Fark about Nat's case. I wonder what other residents of the rooming house have to say about any interactions b/w Nat & Ahmed? Was Ahmed's attack on the officers connected to Nat's disappearance? Did Ahmed have access to a vehicle? Have there been any searches in and near the Humber River? I also wonder whether LE has searched the landfill where the garbage from the rooming house is delivered.

Nothing new in this article except a little history and family background. They're still waiting for answers on Nat the cat's whereabouts . :(

Recently, Brettell’s siblings I. and L., along with his close friends A. M., M. R. and A. C., met outside the rooming house where he lived to try to make sense of what might have happened to him. “There are so many unanswered questions,” said C., who was Brettell's college roommate back in 1994. C. said he and several of Nat’s school friends — who affectionately called him "Nat the cat" — are eager to know what’s going on.

Toronto police Const. Caroline de Kloet said at this time there are no further updates to this investigation. Anyone with details about Brettell’s disappearance should contact the homicide squad at 416-808-7400, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477) or online at 222tips.com.

Suspect charged in murder of missing 57-year-old Etobicoke man
''Toronto police say charges have been laid in connection with the murder of a Etobicoke man who went missing earlier this year.

On Jan. 21, 57-year-old Nathaniel Brettell was reported missing to police.

Brettell was last known to be at his rooming house that day, in the area of Westona Street and Dixon Road, police said.''

''On Wednesday, police said they arrested Al-Farkh in connection with the homicide and he faces one count of second-degree murder.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

It is unclear if Al-Farkh and Brettell were known to one another.

Police are continuing to search for Brettell’s remains.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).''

Thanks for the update, @dotr. I'm not shocked that Al-Farkh was charged with Nat's murder. I find it interesting though that he's charged w/ 2nd degree murder. Apparently LE has enough info to know how to charge him. Maybe these charges will make Al-Farkh talk now. I wish he'd tell what he did with him so Nat the Cat's family can get him home.

A legal update per Nat's sister:

Help find Nathaniel “Nat” Brettell
Thursday morning @ 10am will be the next appearance in Zoom the Accused will meet with the Judge to discuss his murder of Nat,,: hopefully some details will start to present themselves

Toronto Police Service :: News Release #50292
''Case #: 2021-204256
As part of a homicide investigation into the disappearance of Nathaniel Brettell, officers will be searching a waste management site.

A search warrant was granted for the Green Lane Landfill site in Southwold for Monday, July 5, 2021.

The excavation is expected to be ongoing for the next couple of months and will involve multiple units from across the Service including Homicide, Police Dogs, Emergency Management and Public Order, and the Public Safety Unit.

The 57-year-old was last known to be at home on Thursday, January 21, 2021, in the Westona Street and Dixon Road area. There have been no further sightings of him.

Despite extensive inquiries, officers have been unable to locate Nathaniel so far. This, along with evidence from the scene, led investigators to treat his disappearance as a homicide.

Ahmed Al-Farkh, 34, of Toronto, was arrested in May and has been charged with second-degree murder.

Following a development in the investigation, officers also have reason to believe Nathaniel's body could be at the landfill site.

Detectives continue to urge the public to come forward with any information.

Residents in the area of the landfill will be informed of any potential impacts that may result from the search. However, it is not expected to impact garbage collection in Toronto.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-7400, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, online on our Facebook Leave a Tip page, or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637). Oh, Dear God, let it be that Al-Farkh has finally decided to tell LE exactly what he did with Nat the cat's remains. My prayers are going out for Nat's family and for the searchers. May they finally be able to bring Nat home. :(

Landfill records may aid search for Toronto homicide victim's body: Expert | Toronto Sun
''Police looking for the body of a Toronto homicide victim are set to search a mega-landfill on London’s outskirts, a massive task one expert says will be made easier by the dump’s meticulous record-keeping.

Toronto police will begin searching the Green Lane landfill, located at 38593 Third Line in Southwold Township, on Monday for the body of Nathaniel Brettell, 57. He was last seen alive on Jan. 21 at his Etobicoke rooming house.''

''A former London police detective says he’s cautiously optimistic investigators will recover Brettell’s body.

“The facilities keep pretty good records on where on the grid that that days load would have gone, so that helps narrow it down where they should be looking” said Mike Arntfield, now a Western University professor and author.

But investigators need to have an idea when the body ended up in the landfill, Arntfield said. “If they don’t know the date, you’re looking at a Herculean undertaking.”

''Paul Whitehead, a Western University sociology professor emeritus who specializes in criminology, said finding a body at the massive dump won’t be easy.

“The cadaver dogs are good if the grave is relatively shallow. If this body is buried between 10, let alone 20 feet of garbage, I don’t think the cadaver dogs are going to help that much,” Whitehead said. “It’s a needle-in-a-haystack situation.”

“If they have reason to believe the body of a murder victim is at this landfill, you can’t just leave it there,” he said''

Video from the landfill where authorities may have begun a search for Nat's remains. The reporter says LE hasn't confirmed whether they've started the search, but the vid shows paramedic vehicles leaving the property. According to the report, the vehicles are there to "provide treatment for the officers working the scene". Nat's sister and brother speak on camera. My prayers go out to them as they continue to wait for answers.
