Saint John is in the grips of the most sensational crime to come along in decades, a senior source in New Brunswick legal circles said Wednesday.

The grisly murder of high profile businessman Richard (Dick) Oland — a one-time beer executive with Moosehead — is the talk of the Maritime city with many wondering when an arrest is going to be made.

“The Olands are a big deal with Saint John. The only ones that would trump them are the Irvings,” the source said, referring to the legendary Irving oil family.

Oland’s body was discovered nearly a week ago in his Saint John office and as of Tuesday still no warrant had been issued for the arrest of the person or persons involved in the axe murder, the Toronto Star has learned.

"This is not a situation where we have somebody randomly going around and assaulting or, you know, doing something to individuals," Reid said. "It's an isolated situation."

Reid said a forensics team is processing the scene and officers are interviewing potential witnesses.

Officers used sniffer dogs to search the area for evidence and canvassed people in neighbouring buildings.

"He was certainly driven," said museum CEO Jane Fullerton. "He was passionate. He was focused on getting things done. He had an ability to bring people together and to get them to work together to get things done."

Oland was honoured as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1997, for his efforts as an entrepreneur with a social conscience.

When not hard at work, Oland raced yachts, winning races around the world, including the International Rolex Regatta in St. Thomas in 2010.

Clearly the police believe it was a targeted killing. Murder with an axe in an office would seem to imply premeditation.

In August, Jackson ordered the release of seven heavily redacted search warrants along with related documents. They show that police believe Oland, 69, was murdered.

The also show that police seized 57 items from a home in the Saint John suburb of Rothesay that property records say is owned by Dennis Oland, Richard's son. Those items include legal papers, bank statements, garbage bags, bedding, clothing, a purple purse and a "note in a purse."

The records also reveal that police searched a 7.6-metre yacht named Loki, which was docked at the Royal Kennebecasis Yacht Club in Saint John. The name of the boat's owner is blacked out, but the record says "genealogy papers/books/documents" were sought.

Clearly LE has done a pretty good job keeping the media muzzled in this high profile case. The door seems to be opening a bit though.

Reading between the lines, it appears that LE believes this to be a case involving person(s) known to the victim.

If this was the UK, the British tabloids would be all over this.

Such a vicious murder. I hope it is solved soon.
 
Not sure why it's taking them forever to make an arrest.
 
Police have a suspect, however that person’s name is protected by a publication ban. Last week a judge released partial details of the search warrants and other supporting docs in the investigation of Richard Oland’s murder.

Having perused the recent MSM reports regarding the release to the media of certain information from the search warrants it looks as if LE has a suspect (unnamed) in mind who may have had a financial motive to kill RHO and, yes, it does appear to point toward the son. :moo:

No arrest in 15 months, so it would seem as if there isn’t enough conclusive evidence.
 
I was in NB when this happened and everyone was saying the suspect was the man's son. I even heard it on the CTV news Atlantic at the time. Weird.

Go back and read post#4, same info as the recently released into. In post 4 it states the address searched is owned by the son according to property records.

Been pondering the above, and conclude that that is a pretty b!tch!n thing to do when you've supposedly been under wraps as a mistress for 8 years (unless the wife knew of the affair and didn't particularly care). It also seems a bit fishy that THE OTHER WOMAN would use a police presence at the office to justify phoning THE WIFE. Smacks somewhat of stabbing somebody and twisting the knife, YKWIM

Feel kinda rude saying this, but the DS on FB is a fairly attractive, middle-aged woman who should not have had any problems getting an eligible guy. Mr. O seemed more like an old geezer who was married. Not sure what the attraction was there, and wondering what the perks of that relationship were.

Sedlacek, a local real estate agent, told police they had been in a romantic relationship for eight years and she believed most of his family was aware of their affair.
