Family Has Waited More Then 30 Years For Answers
It was a happy, festive time.
Sharron Prior, a pretty, blonde 16-year-old, was looking forward to Easter Sunday. At 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 1975, she sat in her familys home in the Pointe Saint-Charles section of Montreal, Canada, decorating Eastern eggs. Although her twin sisters had convinced themselves that they were too old for an Easter egg hunt, she was sure that the boys in the house an 11-year-old brother and 4-year-old foster brother would participate.
The rest of the day was unique only in that there was no foretelling of the violence that would tear at the family for the next three-and-a-half decades. A girlfriend stopped by to visit Sharron, and Sharron worried about whether the drizzle outside would damage her brown suede jacket. At 7:10 p.m., Sharron walked out the door to meet friends at Marinas Pizzeria nearby.
Goodbye, mom, she called back into the house.
Goodbye, Sharron, her mother, Yvonne, replied. Be careful.
Sharron didnt come home that night, or the night after. The family and police realized that shed met with foul play. Neighbors searched the familiar streets that had suddenly become scary and unpredictable.
Four days later, her body was discovered in Longueuil, Quebec, on the other side of the bridge from Montreal. Shed been abducted, raped and murdered.
Her killer has never been found.
'We Still Need Your Help'
The primarily French-speaking Longueuil Police are still looking for answers. Theyve asked anyone present in Pointe Saint-Charles or the Longueuil area at the time to search their memories.
Any small detail may be able to help us in this case, said Constable Mark David. It may be something that the person saw or heard at the time of the event. It may be a conversation that the person heard since the event happened. With modern technology, clues of the past may give us important answers.
Yvonne theorizes that her daughter was the victim of a serial killer, noting that the year before, a 12-year-old was found mutilated and sexually molested in nearby Chateauguay. The family says that same night, a 23-year-old mother was attacked in Pointe Saint-Charles by a mustached, English-speaking man who tried to drag her off the street.
Youre dead, the victim claimed that her assailant boasted. Youre not getting away from me.
Ill cut you to pieces.
We have a description from that night, down to the jeans to the color of his eyes, Yvonne said. But, for all these years nothing.
Somebody Knows Something
Because of the murder, the other children in the Prior home grew up in an atmosphere laden with tragedy and mystery. Yvonne had the kids chaperoned to and from school to ensure that none suffered the same horrible fate as Sharron.
In 2004, Longueuil Police received a tip that Sharron might have been in a Porte Saint-Charles garage during her abduction. When investigators entered the building, they found blood stains. But none of the DNA matched Sharrons.
You cant believe how bad its been, Yvonne said. For 36 years, its been up and down. Is it someone from the area? Is it someone I know? Its haunting.
At times, Yvonne imagines Sharron as a woman in her fifties.
Im 73 now, Yvonne said. I want this solved while Im still alive. Somebodys holding the answer. Sharron hasnt been able to rest. I want my child to rest.
