Questions for Locals:

1. Is the area the perp took Sonia to, known as more of a shortcut from point A to B? Is it a place where couples go to spend time together?

2. Does the area where her car was left by the perp, normally have alot of vehicles there, both overnight and during the day?

3. Is Sonia's home in a "gated" community? Someone mentioned this here, I have not heard of that. ANSWERED: NO

Driver surprised to see himself in police video

This article has an embedded video where it shows the back alley near where Sonia's car was found. It was apparently released (I had not learned of this until reading the article) shortly after the car was discovered. This article also mentions that the car was found with the doors and trunk open with blood smears on the back end. The sky is dark so I think LE feels that the vehicle was abandoned very early in the morning before sunrise.

Bumping my post to see if any locals or those who know Orangeville know the answers to any of these questions?

Also, the video that Matou posted here shows the Toronto Star Delivery Driver speeding through the parking lot.

Can anyone here shed light on the perspective of the camera angle in relation to the location where Sonia's vechicle was recovered? Would the camera have picked up Sonia's car being dropped off?

I see a monument in the still picture of the car location, and I also see a monument in the video, but they are from different angles so it is difficult to decipher.

Wow, thank you matou for that link! I had seen that video before, but the car passed so fast it was a blur. In that link you provided it goes so slow, a can actually see the car. Maybe it is the same video I saw before, and it's just my computer that is slow today (many windows opened and music playing)?

Will go look for a link someone posted days ago, of the google street view of where Sonia's car was found, to try see that location with the flags.

ETA: Wondergirl, I see the monument and something that looks like a bench as well.

I don't have or follow facebook but it looks like the trolls were out on Sonia's page over the weekend...

Police offer few details in hunt for killer

"Meanwhile, Facebook has been abuzz with people leaving messages of condolence on a memorial page for Varaschin, and some discussing the punishment they would like to see handed down to her killer - even calling for a return to capital punishment.

But over the weekend, amongst the legitimate conversation on the page, several accounts posted inappropriate and sometimes pornographic content attacking Varaschin's character. There was immediate backlash from legitimate users there to mourn the pediatric nurse who many have described as a wonderful, loving person, and several people noted that they had phoned police about posts that referenced witnessing the murder, or being the one who carried it out. A moderator has since removed all the posts.

"I can't speak specifically to each and every item on Facebook, but having said that, our investigative team does have access to Facebook and generally they do monitor it and will follow up if necessary," said Beckett. "If the investigative team thought it might help the investigation then certainly (they would follow up)."

Beckett noted that content posted on the social networking site is public, not private, and users can be held legally responsible for their activity. "You may be held responsible under the Criminal Code for the words that you use. Generally if it's a crime in the real world it's a crime on the Internet."

Police could not speak to whether any tips have come in about the boots specifically, but noted that the tip line has been ringing, and any piece of information is worth a call to the cops.

"Yes, the tip line has received a number of tips. Each and every tip is investigated by a detective, so certainly anyone with any information is asked to call. No matter how minor or how small it may be, that piece of information may hold the key to solving her murder and bringing that person to justice," said Caledon OPP Constable Jonathan Beckett.

A number of persons of interest are currently being investigated and police are asking the public to call in with any information

These is all I could find Wondergirl, hope this will help someone who knows Orangeville to shed some light :)

Thanks KAE and matou! :)

OK just took a tour of Broadway in Orangeville via Google streetview and the camera is likely on top of the Insurance building at the corner of 2nd Street(Absolute Insurance Brokers) facing the park. Greenhawk is near the east end and there are cedar trees opposite the back parking where Sonia's car was found, near 3rd Street.

I haven't used Google Streetview before, newbie here.

I plugged in 12 Second St., in Orangeville, for the Insurance Company here. So, which direction should I make the orange man walk to get to where the car was?

Here Wondergirl, use this:

Open the link and the map will be in streetview. You will see the back alley of Broadway between 2nd and 3rd streets. There is no street name although this alley appears fortunately for us in streetview (which is weird). Move yourself around through streetview by dragging on the image to see around you and behind you. You can follow the alley by clicking on the arrows to move forwards and back. To get out, click the minus sign to decrease your magnification. HTH Forgot to mention that the map will be set to show you the view of the alleyway looking at 3rd street. On the right there is a yellowish building and this is the Greenhawk equestrian supplies shop where Sonia`s car was found. On the left, there are lots of trees.

I hope we hear some more info soon, i know they are following up on a few persons of interest but would be nice to know if they were atleast confident to closing in on someone :( . I still strongly feel that the perp had to be on foot from the point of the alley or have another vehicle handy which would mean as i said earlier, there vehicle would have to be covered in blood as well or they ditched there clothes close by before getting into there own vehicle.
Just to add I know the delivery driver in the van denies knowing or seeing anything at all but the way they tore out of that lot wow i sure thought something was up! Its just a matter of time before that sicko is caught!!

I really hope we hear something soon too. I am taking this silence as a good thing though, they probably want the perp to relax and think they aren't on to him.

As for the guy in the delivery van, the view we see of him is coming from the other end of the area from where Sonia's car was found. When we see him go in front of the camera, he is heading down the alley towards the car. If he had anything to do with leaving the car there, I don't think he would be driving anywhere near it afterwards.

Lady Alex, I can address that rumour. Apparently someone (a teenage boy) did commit suicide in a motel on Broadway Ave. the Friday following the murder. Everyone was talking about it, thinking it was the killer. Our local paper specifically addressed that rumour a few days ago, and said that the person who killed himself was not related to the murder in any way.

I don't think that they would put the effort that they have put in to this case if the murderer was already dead. He's still out there somewhere, hopefully he is really sweating bullets by now, counting down his last few days/weeks of freedom (we can hope).

Thanks missbrooks and welcome to WebSleuths. This makes sense. I thought it had to be something like that.

Police await forensic results in Varaschin case: Tomei

While police wait for the results of forensic testing on evidence collected from murder victim Sonia Varaschin’s car, her home and the area where her body was found, tips from the public continue to pour in.

“The investigative team is still working very hard in following up all leads,” said Orangeville police chief Joseph Tomei, noting the quantity of tips coming in haven’t slowed in the nearly three weeks since Varaschin was last seen alive. “They have numerous leads that have come in from the public.”

Tomei said he’s personally received tips from as far away as B.C. — they too have been looked into.

“Every lead is followed up,” he stressed.

Police continue to believe the “key” to finding Varaschin’s killer is his boots; men’s size 10 or 11 Dakota or Wind River brand, likely with stains on them.

Anyone who knows someone with boots matching that description, or who recently disposed of their boots, is encouraged to call the Orangeville Police Service dedicated tip line at 519-941-2522, ext. 2211.

Anonymous calls can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Crime Stoppers offers an award of up to $2,000 for information that leads to a conviction.

Varaschin’s body was found in a wooded area off Beech Grove Sideroad on Sept. 5, one week after she disappeared. Following positive identification of her remains, massive search efforts for the 42-year-old were called off and a murder investigation officially launched.

Because of where the body was found, Tomei said the investigation is being headed by the Ontario Provincial Police, but his force remains actively involved.

This is the same psychic who had some really far fetched and way off info posted about another Ontario case last year.

Yeah, she really sounds like she is all over the place. I don't know if any of you follow the Tori S. murder case. Psychics predicted she was alive. One mentioned that she was living in a house with a man and a woman out in the country somewhere. Another also said that she was alive and well and eating McDonald's food.

In reality poor Tori was likely murdered the same day/hour she was taken.

Thanks so much missbrooks, that was very helpful. With your explanation I was able to find the exact location of the camera.
Wondergirl: I am posting the Google streetview link that shows the park with the flags and monument and a tank, just as we see in the picture provided by LE.

From that point, click the right (blue) arrow twice, and to your right there is the CAMERA mounted on that red brick building. Then just walk straight to go to the area where Sonia's car was found (Greenhawk)

I am hoping very much that the forensic evidence shows something somewhere and gives them a good break in the case!

Note the dirt on the tires. I wonder if he drove right into the field where he left her?
