Vancouver Police have renewed an appeal by Surrey RCMP for help locating a woman last seen on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

In a news release issued Monday (May 30), VPD officials say Tatyanna Harrison, 20, has not been heard from since the end of March.

“This is unusual behaviour for Tatyanna and her family is concerned for her wellbeing,” the release states. “She was last known to be in Vancouver, specifically in the Downtown Eastside area.”

In asking for the public’s assistance earlier this month, Surrey RCMP noted Harrison was reported missing on May 3.

She is described as a five-foot-one Indigenous woman, with brown eyes and a slim build. When last seen, she had medium length auburn hair, and she usually wears prescription glasses and baggy clothing.

Anyone with information that could assist in locating Harrison is asked to call the Vancouver Police Missing Person Unit at 604-717-2530 or email vpd.missing@vpd.ca

To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime.ca

"Investigators believe this man is a possible witness and not a suspect," Const. Tania Visintin said in a news release. "They believe he was last seen with Tatyanna on March 23. We need him, or anyone who knows him, to call police."

Harrison says she spent all of April canvassing Surrey, where Tatyanna lives, for any sign of her. With no leads, she turned her attention to Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

She said it’s not an area her daughter frequented, and she wasn’t aware of her having a social circle in the area, but after canvassing the streets on her own, she learned Tatyanna may have been there.

In late May, the VPD took over the case.

In an emailed statement to CTV News, a spokesperson for the VPD said: “Three weeks into the Surrey RCMP investigation it was revealed that Tatyanna had used a bank machine at the end of March in Vancouver. It was at this time that VPD Missing Persons Unit took over the investigation.”

Reading the Wikipedia entry on "Downtown Eastside", this doesn't sound good; I'm worried that she might be the next MMIW.

In addition to rehashing details already known about the case, the video reveals two additional sightings of the missing 20-year-old in Vancouver in April.

Harrison was reported missing on May 3, but she had been out of contact with her mother for more than a month at that point.

The timeline of events laid out in the video begins on Feb. 3 in Surrey, when Harrison spoke with Surrey RCMP officers near the intersection of King George Boulevard and Bolivar Road, telling them she had nowhere to stay.

From Feb. 9 to 22, she stayed at a shelter at 875 Terminal Ave. in Vancouver and was often seen with a male companion, according to the video.

On Feb. 23, Harrison used an RBC bank machine at 398 West Broadway, the video states. The next entry in the timeline is on March 23, when she visited the RBC branch at Main and Hastings streets in Vancouver to report a lost bank card.

Police have previously shared details of this encounter, releasing surveillance images of a man believed to have been with her during the bank visit.

As of the release of the video Saturday, the witness has not been identified, police said.

Police say 20-year-old Tatyanna Harrison was reported missing May 3.
“Tatyanna is a very strong and beautiful girl that’s a voice for people who suffer, or people who don’t have one,” said Harrison, in the video. “She’s articulate, she’s smart, she’s an avid reader, she’s fearless.”

Each day that passes without finding Tatyanna increases our concern for her well-being,” said Const. Tania Visintin, a spokesperson for the VPD, in a statement Saturday.

“Tatyanna’s family, friends, and the community have been instrumental in helping establish a timeline of her last whereabouts. The VPD and Tatyanna’s family want to ensure that the entire community remains engaged in the ongoing search for Tatyanna. We are asking everyone to share this video so we can find Tatyanna.”

"This is heartbreaking news to everyone who knew and loved Tatyanna, and to the many strangers who came together to search for her when she disappeared," Constable Tania Visintin said in a press release.

“Although we are now able to provide some answers, many questions remain, and we will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Tatyanna's disappearance."

VPD investigators said that they believe Tatyanna had relocated to Vancouver from Surrey for several weeks before her disappearance.

She last texted her mother from somewhere on the Downtown Eastside on March 24.''

"Tragically, we now believe Tatyanna died in another city before she was reported missing," Visintin said. "The Coroners Service has informed VPD that Tatyanna died from drug toxicity, specifically fentanyl."

Vancouver Police continue to ask anyone with information Tatyanna's last movements to call VPD Missing Person Unit at 604-717-2530 or email vpd.missing@vpd.ca''

i'm disappointed it took LE from may 2 to july 14 to identify tatyanna's remains. that should be an embarrassment, imho, especially given awareness of issues around LE and mmiw. rest in peace, tatyanna.

''Police say the coroners service told them the cause of death for Tatyanna Harrison was toxic drugs, specifically fentanyl.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about her last movements to call VPD's missing person unit at 604-717-2530 or email vpd.missing@vpd.ca. People wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or visit www.solvecrime.ca.

Harrison was in Surrey, B.C. until Feb. 3, according to the VPD. From Feb. 9 to 22, she stayed at a shelter at 875 Terminal Ave. in Vancouver.

On March 23, Harrison visited the Royal Bank of Canada branch in the Downtown Eastside to report a stolen card.

She subsequently got another card, and was seen at the bank with an unidentified man, described as 30 to 40 years old with a slim build, a moustache and stubble on his face.''

''Police say the man is being treated as a witness and not a suspect in the disappearance. Investigators have not said if they have been able to contact the man.

Police say that Tatyanna was seen several times since, including on April 7 in Robson Park and on April 22 at the Grand Union Pub.''

Two months to identify the remains and know the cause of death is pretty good in my book. I assume those involved in investigating this case are coping with staff shortages as we all are.

B.C. coroner concluded Tatyanna Harrison died of sepsis — months after police said fentanyl was the cause

"The coroner's report addresses the circumstances surrounding her death by writing, 'despite investigative efforts by police, it remains unknown how Tatyanna came to be on the dry-docked boat in Richmond where she was discovered deceased. Her whereabouts after April 22, 2022, remain unknown, as do the circumstances of how she travelled to the boat, and whether she was in the company of others.'"

Just reading about opioids and fentanyl plus sepsis, it sounds like fentanyl injections sometimes allow bacteria to enter through the injection sites, leading to sepsis. My impression is that she used fentanyl, developed sepsis and died.

"Simeon Kimmel: Many people with opioid use disorder are using injection opioids. When somebody injects an opioid, there is penetration of the skin barrier with a needle, which introduces the risk of infection. That can be the result of bacteria that are living on the skin, bacteria on the injection equipment such as the syringe, or the substance that is being injected can be contaminated with bacteria. Especially in the era of fentanyl, which has contaminated the injection opioid supply, fentanyl is a shorter-acting opioid that requires more frequent injections. What we are seeing is that people are injecting very frequently, which leads to an increased risk of skin and soft tissue infection. We see blood stream infections, where bacteria get into the blood and infect the heart valves, bones, and joints—we see septic arthritis."
