Those poor LE and everyone else involved. The PTSD they must face. I hope they are receiving the care that they need/want.
Does the jury have any sort of counsellors afterwards?

Thank you Kamille. Today must be extra difficult to do this. :(

Thank you dyanna. I must admit I had no idea what I was going to be posting today as I didn't really follow the case. Just thought I'd try to help out with the tweets since ILoveDateline was unavailable. I'm truly horrified right along with the rest of you. :(

Thanks Kamille and hugs to you. What a gruesome day. He has been planning all along to try the insanity plea. Who would have been next if they hadn't stopped him? It is way worse then I had imagined with the cannibalism details. Poor little Hailey must have been so scared. This is so awful for all the families. Just makes me sick.

Alberta supporting jurors after mentally exhausting trials

In 2015, Alberta was the first province to initiate a juror support program.

[...]

Free counselling can be accessed by jurors during a trial, or for up to two months after the conclusion of a case. Counsellors are available over the phone, or in person – whatever best fits the client’s needs.

“There are four sessions of counselling,” Newcombe said. “But we also have a clinical process in place so if somebody is experiencing more difficulties or challenges, they definitely can access more sessions.”

“The concern is for jurors’ emotional health, and offering help if they need it,” the Government of Alberta said in a statement. “The Juror Assistance and Support Program was created to help ensure that jurors who have been affected by trial evidence and what happens in the jury room can access counselling if they need to.”

Derek Saretzky tells court God taunted me to do it

LETHBRIDGE — Jurors heard shocking and disturbing evidence Thursday about how Derek Saretzky killed a little girl and performed unimaginable indignities on her body.

Saretzky told RCMP Staff Sgt. Mike McCauley he then burned the remains of two-year-old Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette in a fire pit in a wooded area not far from his Blairmore, Alta., home.

[...]

He told McCauley God told him to kill Blanchette "by taunting me to do it."

"I hit him with a crowbar," Saretzky said.

After striking the victim in the head the accused said he choked Blanchette with a rope and then cut his throat.

"‘Cause I was gonna drain his blood," Saretzky said.

He said he was going to drink Blanchette’s blood, but didn’t, because "I didn’t drain it in a good container."

'She cried a little bit': Derek Saretzky details kidnapping and killing of child in interrogation video

WARNING: Story contains graphic details that may be disturbing to some readers

In her final moments before she was strangled and dismembered at a rural campsite, two-year-old Hailey Dunbar Blanchette "cried a little bit," said Derek Saretzky who admitted to performing acts of cannibalism after he killed the child he'd stolen from her crib at night.

During a two-hour interrogation on Sept. 15, 2015, led by RCMP interview specialist Staff Sgt. Mike McCauley, Saretzky confessed to killing Hailey and her father, Terry Blanchette, the day before.

[...]

McCauley and Saretzky are so close during the interview, their knees nearly touch as they sit face to face in a small room at the Blairmore RCMP detachment.

Saretzky remains evasive with the officer for about an hour, telling McCauley he doesn't remember anything, that "God did it" and that the devil "taunts" him to do bad things.

Finally, the details begin to spill out of the tearful suspect.

Saretzky says the devil made him break into Blanchette's home armed with a knife, crowbar and mask. He found Blanchette in his bed and began the attack, eventually slitting his victim's throat.

Blanchette was killed because he was a "terrible father," said Saretzky.

Upstairs, Saretzky says, he found Hailey in her crib and used a pillow to muffle the two-year-old girl's screams.

I am so shocked and saddened by these details. My heart goes out to the family members. I can't imagine what they are going through.

It's unbelievable really. I've followed many trials here at WS and I cannot believe what I am hearing.

He knows right from wrong. He knew that what he did was wrong and horrific. He knows. He tried to destroy evidence, tried to disguise himself, wore gloves and the murders were premeditated. I can't believe the audacity of asking if he pleaded guilty by reason of insanity would he get off? Wow! I'm thinking his lawyers must have fought hard to keep these confessions out of evidence.

I feel terrible for the Saretzky family. Now I understand why Larry Saretzky was so emotional. Just imagine if your child had done what Derek did. Poor Cheyenne. I can't imagine how someone would get over this; hearing all these horrific things that were done to her daughter. Then the Blanchette's and Hanne's family.

I am only glad at this point, that I have been able to move my emotions to the families and am putting DS as far back in mind as I possibly can.

This is brutal.

I've began to wonder about those comments on DS's notebook, "fresh medicine" and "hideous child". They seem to me beyond DS's normal vocabularly ("God works in weird ways" he said). I'm starting to think they're expressions he got from a book or movie or something else that influenced him. I'm completely ignorant of popular culture, so I can't pinpoint it, but perhaps someone else has ideas..

I can't say for sure, I think he comes across as "disturbed" and emotionally immature. True, an insane person doesn't discuss using an insanity defense, but a calculating killer wouldn't discuss it with a police officer, on videotape.

GRAPHIC CONTENT

So, I'm getting the impression that he killed the neighbour for practice, and the target all along was the child. It's almost like he wanted to eat his friend's baby ... given that the child's mother was his friend. This is one of the most twistest I've ever read.

Now we know why the Hannibal Lecter book was considered a "how to".

Yes, thankfully they do. Alberta is one of the only provinces that offer free counselling to members of the jury. It's something that I believe more people should fight for in their own provinces.

There are some rather horrific murders in Alberta, not really an option to not provide post-trial juror counselling. Not all horrific murders end in trial, like the murders of Josh Lall, but there are several gruesome style murders where too many gorry details are released to the public. If jurors need counselling after learning the details of the murders, chances are a lot more people do as well.

In the audio interview DS says he was supposed to be in court for a traffic ticket that morning. I remembered it as more serious and looked it up: B & E and possession under $5k. It was at least his third arrest, so he may have been facing more serious consequences and a criminal record. I wonder if the approaching court date was any kind of psychological trigger. See towards end of article http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/calgary/derek-saretzky-blairmore-homicides-suspect-1.3231499

Rather than Hannibal, I wonder if he was influenced by vampire stories. This stuff is every where in pop culture.

I didn't see anything in the article about Hannibal or vampires - maybe the article was changed? Never mind - AUDIO clip - didn't listen to it yet.

Drinking blood is vampire, but it is also Hannibal. Did he also have vampire books? He learned how to drain blood from Hannibal and wanted to drink blood because of Vampire books?
