He was last seen at 9:00 am in Vancouver, but the actual time he would have left Vancouver to arrive approx. an hour later and be seen at Delaney's on Lynn Valley Rd is unknown. Sunset was at 4:20 pm that day, so I can't see him choosing the lengthier trails that would have kept him out past sunset.

I don't think people fully understand how early the winter sun sets in Canada, so a British tourist may have assumed, without thinking it through, that he had until 8 PM. If he was caught off guard by the setting sun, he may have tried to short cut his route, and found himself in trouble.

The media used the term "avid hiker" (so not necessarily "experienced" as the term I used). Regardless of where he is on the scale of abilities, accidents can happen.

If he didn't sign in however, maybe he wasn't there.

There's also quite a big difference between an avid hiker in a really populated small country, like England, and an avid hiker in the Canadian wilderness. There a British man running across Canada to raise money for Children's hospitals right now and one point he has made is that he had no idea how big the country was, yet there are only about 35 million people. This is compared to the US, which is a smaller country, but which has 335 million people.

Looking at the videos, start, stop, scan ... I'm not optimistic.

Sure ain't the British countryside, eh?

In the Youtube comments somebody thinks they spotted a blue tent, and NSSAR was going to check it out. For the life of me I couldn't see it, but others could (I don't understand the thing about switching to 1080 HD ... that option isn't in my resolution choices, and per usual ... I have no clue ;))

"Rescue crews have posted three more videos — shot from helicopter on Dec. 28 over B.C.'s Grouse Mountain and Lynn Valley — in an effort to find missing British tourist Tom Billings.

The move comes two days after three similar videos of Vancouver's North Shore mountains were released in hope that the public might notice something that will aid the search.

:(

The only thing I can imagine worse than having your loved one go missing is having them go missing in a foreign country...

In the Global News article I linked above, his family states that he is an experienced hiker who has travelled all over the world. Here's hoping that by some miracle, Tom can still make it out alive.

I know a fellow who did winter camping in James Bay ... saw the pics of him with his beard frozen solid in serious sub-zero temps, wearing a t-shirt outside the ice fort he built for himself. Who knows what Tom is capable of conjuring up to survive.

There is always HOPE.

Not Tom, but this is so sad ... Tim led the search for Tom, and is a very familiar face and name to British Columbians:

You sure earned your wings, Tim

Rest in Peace
:rose::rose::rose:

So sad, terribly sorry this happened to an obviously great guy.

From the link..

" “Tim has been a tower of strength for us in his unstinting search for our son,” said Martin Billings, whose son Tom Billings went missing on the North Shore in November, and still hasn’t been found. “He was an inspiration. He was selflessly courageous and an inspirational leader of North Shore Rescue.”

“He was a compassionate and sincerely caring person. I am so sorry he lost his life so early, my condolences to his family and the NSR,” reads a tribute by Lori Moyes who broke her ankle on the Lynn Loop nine years ago.

The release on the NSR’s website says Jones died on a trail where he had led countless rescues over the years.

The release also states Jones had just completed team business at its rescue cabin on Mt. Seymour and was coming down the mountain when he collapsed.

Despite the attendance of many first responders Jones could not be revived".

VPD may know what happened to missing British tourist, Tom Billings

It’s been nearly six months since the sudden disappearance of a young British tourist in Vancouver and police think they know where Tom Billings may be.

It’s believed the 22-year-old, an experienced hiker, may have run into some bad weather or gotten lost somewhere on the local mountains back in late November or early December.

VPD Constable Brian Montague says they’re working with North Shore Rescue which is keeping an eye out for him during other search missions.

It’s been more than 7 months since British tourist Tom Billings disappeared while hiking on the North Shore Mountains, but rescue officials are once again calling on the public for help.

North Shore Rescue says with summer here and the parks now open, backcountry hikers in the Lynne Headwaters, Hanes Valley, Crown Pass, Goat Mountain or Grouse area should keep an eye out for unusual animal activity, discarded clothing or anything that looks “suspicious.”

"Investigators will release additional photos today hoping to jog someone's memory, and say the five-foot-seven, blond-haired, blue-eyed man was last seen wearing a black jacket and grey military-style pants"

"Vancouver Police call it "very unusual," for a young man to disappear — with no resolution or suspicion of foul play.

Const. Brian Montague said that out of thousands of missing persons reports, "I believe this is the only one in the last couple of years that has remained unsolved."

Police say Tom Billings is 22 years old, white, 5’7″ tall, 160 lbs, with blonde short hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a black jacket and grey military style pants. (Vancouver Police Department)

Montague describes Billings as an avid hiker, who had travelled all over the world.

Billings' father exchanged emails with him 48 hours before he disappeared, and says he seemed "lighthearted" and eager to visit Canada for the first time".
