Break in foiled train attack case expected in next 48 hours: U.S. congressman ...

A top-ranking U.S. Democratic congressman says a break in the case of the alleged plot to attack a passenger train connecting Toronto and New York is imminent.

Congressman Brian Higgins, who represents a district in Western New York and is a member of the Committee on Homeland Security, told CTV’s Question Period in an interview that aired Sunday that he believes more information will be revealed in the next 48 hours.

“I suspect over the next 48 (hours) you’ll see good verifiable information about just who was involved, who were they connected with (and) were they acting alone,” Higgins said.

“The defendant, Esseghaier and the UC [Under Cover] also spoke about Esseghaier’s proposed terrorist plots. Among other things, the defendant told the UC that while Esseghaier’s plans were good, the time was not right. The defendant noted that he had suggested an alternative plot — contaminating the air or water with bacteria in order to kill up to 100,000 people — but that Esseghaier was dismissive of the plan,” the letter said.

One person who briefly worked in a laboratory with Mr. Abassi described him as “a normal guy” who never talked about terrorism. Mr. Abassi was co-author of a paper with Laval colleagues in the December 2012 edition of the scientific journal Applied Catalysis.

I think we need to do a better job screening foreign students.

Two men in Canada were found guilty Friday of terror charges for a foiled plot to attack a train traveling from New York to Toronto.

Prosecutors said Raed Jaser, 37, and Chiheb Esseghaier, 32, spent months planning to kill as many people as possible on a train that would leave from Penn Station. They wanted to derail the train from a bridge after it crossed over the Canadian border, plunging it into the Niagara River...

The failed radicals face life in prison and are scheduled to be sentenced on April 10.

Two men found guilty of eight terrorism charges after being accused of plotting to derail a train between Canada and the U.S. aren't likely to be sentenced before July, a Toronto court heard Friday...

As the sentencing phase of their legal proceedings began, Jaser's lawyer said he had recruited a mental health expert to conduct an assessment of his client, and noted he might have some legal issues to raise before the court in the coming weeks...

The case was put over until May 13, at which point Norris said he could advise the court on when his expert's report would be completed.

Not everyone will agree on the true nature of 28-year-old former Laval University student, a towering man with a trim beard, wire glasses, and, as an undercover FBI agent remarked, a faint ‘zebiba’ — Arabic for the forehead mark that forms after repeated contact with a prayer mat.

To the Abassi family, he is a victim lured into a cruel trap. To the U.S. government, he was a soon-to-be terrorist. To his fellow inmates at a New York prison, he was simply “The Guy Who Beat the Feds”...

Within hours Esseghaier’s and Jaser’s arrests in April, 2013, U.S. officials apprehended Abassi in New York. He spent the next 17 months in a U.S. jail, five in isolation. But his case would play out in a dramatically different way than that of his counterparts in Canada...
