A person can get married online in an airport?

That was news to me as well!

This is the excerpt:

The couple hastily got married online on May 16, 2020, while at the airport after Li was told that was the only way she would be allowed to board a flight to Europe — where Karafa has citizenship — during pandemic lockdowns.

thanks for all the updates
what a tangled web ...

Lucy Li takes stand in own defence at murder trial

From the article "Li said she also knew that Karafa wanted her to drop him off at a friend’s place, where he was picking up an Audi Q5 that he wanted to sell. Flipping vehicles was one of many of Karafa’s businesses, she said, adding that he’d never had problems and everything was legal. Karafa borrowed money from her to buy the Audi, but promised to pay it back when a wire from Europe came in."

" When Karafa’s friend’s mom wouldn’t let him take the licence plates, he asked her to drive the Audi and Karafa drove the Mercedes. Because he wasn’t allowed to drive, if Karafa got pulled over for driving a vehicle without plates he faced arrest, Li said."

Oliver Karafa found guilty of impaired driving causing death.

IMO, David Chiang's family must be really upset that O.K. was driving anything, considering that he was convicted in 2014 of impaired driving, criminal negligence causing death , dangerous driving. and served a sentence of 5 years for killing David in 2012.

Due to that, he must have had his drivers license suspended, but L.L. stated in testimony that "Flipping vehicles was one of many of Karafa’s businesses, she said, adding that he’d never had problems and everything was legal."

IMO not sure how that was legal in Ontario ,Canada because,

"Individuals will need a valid driver's license and insurance to purchase a vehicle in Ontario. An expired, cancelled, or suspended license will not qualify as valid. When looking to purchase a vehicle, be sure that your license is up to date to ensure you won't have issues through the car-buying process"

and

"Dealers, Dismantlers, General Business and Exporters - In Ontario, dealers, dismantlers, general businesses and exporters will need to provide Copart an operational license and sales tax exemption forms. Operational licenses include dealer licenses (General or Wholesaler) issued by the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council and business licenses issued by ServiceOntario and your local municipality. These links will provide the forms and information you need to get started with licensing @ Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry CouncilServiceOntario"

Who was O.K. in business with, because he can't legally buy a car in Canada? I had looked at O.K.'s business licenses in Canada, and none included buying and selling vehicles?

Also

"So she agreed and drove the Audi to Karafa’s existing nearby marijuana growing operation, which Li said was legal and was operated out of a property her mom owned".

Lucy Li’s lawyer accuses witness of supplying Oliver Karafa with gun

"On Thursday, O’Connor suggested that Gutierrez helped Karafa with his grow operation business and that it was for this operation that Gutierrez had supplied Karafa a gun. Gutierrez denied being involved in the grow operation — aside from going by once — and he also denied supplying a gun.“You had to be a little concerned that the gun you gave him for the grow-op was used in this shooting?” O’Connor said."

"Court has heard Karafa had a marijuana grow operation involving licences he once showed Pratt, according to testimony from Romano. On the day of the shooting Romano said she and Pratt believed they were meeting at the Stoney Creek property as a possible site for a joint grow operation."

Cannabis Regulations

IMO Not sure how he was approved for a "legal " grow operation. I'd never found any business licenses for a grow op, but maybe someone here can.

All this time to come up with a plausible story and this is the best she could do?

Li testified that Karafa told her she had to take the stairs and it was while they were on the stairs that she noticed a blond wig of hers in a bag he was carrying. She said the wig was a gift from an Instagram sponsor but that she and Karafa had used it subsequently as a “fetish wig.”

Li says she often believed Karafa was cheating on her and that when she saw the wig she believed he was bringing it for another woman to wear. She started arguing with him and he laughed at her and asked why she was “always crazy” and “making up stuff.” In anger, she said she put the wig on and grabbed his phone, running off to the elevator where she was captured on surveillance video wearing the wig.

She also claims:

- She wasn't supposed to stay after dropping O.K. off but she wanted to make sure he wasn't meeting another woman. When the victims showed up, she got into J.R.'s vehicle to chat and when J.R. asked where the realtor was she realized O.K. must have lied to them about something. So she got out of the vehicle and walked over to the two guys who seemed to be arguing and O.K. told her to go check the back of the building for a lockbox and then she heard "pops" and saw T.P. on the ground. O.K. was in the Audi and told her to get in and as they were driving away, she saw J.R. drive her vehicle into a wall. O.K. then went back and took the Range Rover which they drove back to Toronto.

- O.K. told her it was self-defense (“It was self-defence; it was him or me,” ... “they wanted to kill us.”) and they had to flee because T.P.'s gang affiliates would be after them and their family so they drove to Muskoka without a plan and ran out of gas (yet O.K. has $16-17k in cash in a backpack).

- Once in Europe, they went to Slovakia to stay with O.K.'s parents. When news of their arrest warrants came out, O.K.'s dad told them they had to leave. He sent them to a friend's apartment and then two associates of his drove them to Hungary and gave them fake passports (apparently daddy paid over 250k Euros for the service). They were put up in a "safe house" for 1.5 months at which point they were told the international warrants for them had been dropped so they went to Budapest and tried to get new Canadian passports. (LOL)

- Weeks after being in Europe, O.K. started telling L.L. more about what "really" happened. The PPE business wasn't going well and he wouldn't be able to pay T.P. as promised so he decided to kill T.P. and J.R. before T.P. killed O.K.or a loved one. O.K. told her he had the blonde wig because he was planning to wear it as a disguise while driving J.R.'s vehicle away from the scene.

- O.K.'s lawyer denied O.K. said any of those things.

- In jail in Hungary, O.K. and L.L. were able to talk to each other through a window. O.K. pressured her to fight extradition but she waived it because everything in jail cost money that she didn't have so life was hard for her. (LOL)

- Once L.L. was back in Canada and in jail, O.K. was able to call her from Hungary and pressured her to fire her lawyer because he wasn't following a joint defence plan. He also supposedly called her lawyer directly to threaten him.

- O.K.'s lawyer suggests both families were defrauded by the men who were supposedly helping them [L.L.'s mother apparently sent 200k Euros to help with costs].

- The Crown remarked it sounds like a Hollywood script.

[L.L.] also testified that Karafa said the victim Pratt had been violent toward him, he “punched and abused him.”

And that Pratt had told Karafa, “If you want to turn me in to the police, I have friends in the police,” and “Before I get booked within 48 hours, I’ll have some Somalians kill everyone you love.”

She also said while in jail awaiting extradition, she was only given five slices of bread and five cigarettes each day. O.K. told her if she fought extradition, he would put money in her prison account so she could buy more food.

I wonder why her mother/lawyer couldn't/wouldn't fund her account.
