Today’s YRP press release mentions “Suspects” still at large. 3 have been arrested and at least one more on the loose. Seems there was a bigger group behind this than the original 4 captured on video.

My guess is someone who works at or frequents the condo has ties to this group.

New article with a couple new tidbits.
Markham kidnap victim Wanzhen Lu's father being investigated in China

1) Victim's dad is now under investigation in China:

"His involvement in the story has raised eyebrows in China, considering his affiliation to the Taoist religion, which extols giving away one’s wealth to avoid attracting jealousy and endangering someone’s own family..."

2) 4th kidnapper still at large.

The article also indicates that WL is back in China.

A police source told yorkregion.com the victim is back in China. Police expect him to return to provide evidence in the case.

Suspect in violent kidnapping of Wanzhen Lu gets 4 years in jail
"A 22-year-old man arrested in connection to the violent kidnapping of a Chinese international student in Markham in March has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Nathan Plater of Clearview Township south of Collingwood pleaded guilty on Wednesday to kidnapping for ransom in the abduction of Wanzhen Lu."

"Hashim Abdullahi, 33, was arrested at a residence in Brampton later that same day and has been charged with kidnapping, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon and assault.

Both are expected to appear in a Newmarket court on July 3, 2019.

A Canada-wide warrant remains for a fourth suspect, 28-year-old Muzamil Addow of Toronto. Police say he is considered armed and dangerous."

Third suspect named in Markham armed kidnapping of Wanzhen Lu

Well I guess that somewhat answers the question of whether this was actually a random kidnapping for ransom. It appears by this guilty plea that it was. I wonder how they determined WL was going to be their target?

  • Assault.
  • Possession of a weapon.
  • Possession of a prohibited weapon.
  • 2 counts of breach of probation order.
  • Failure to comply with a recognizance.
He appeared in a Newmarket court for a bail hearing on Wednesday and will remain in custody until his next court appearance, which is scheduled for July 18, police said in a statement".

Well that arrest came out of left field. LE have stated there were only 4 men involved and now we have a 5th. This person actually lives closer to the Markham area and would likely travel there more often but I still can’t figure out his connection to WL or the other 4 guys from the west end of Toronto.
