An extensive search is underway for Zachery Lefave, of Hebron, N.S., who was reported missing in the early hours of Jan. 1, 2021. (Submitted by Nova Scotia RCMP)

Ground, water and aerial search crews are scouring parts of Yarmouth County for a 21-year-old man who disappeared early New Year's Day.

Nova Scotia RCMP say Zachery Lefave was last spotted on Highway 334 in Plymouth around 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1 and reported missing two hours later.

In a news release issued later that same day, RCMP described the missing man as five-foot-nine and 175 pounds with brown hair, brown facial hair and blue eyes. They said he was last seen wearing a hat, plaid shirt and shorts.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lisa Croteau told CBC Sunday that the police launched an investigation on New Year's Day, and by the weekend had enlisted the help of several other agencies to search for Lefave.

Yarmouth County Ground Search and Rescue joined the search on Saturday. On Sunday, a helicopter from the provincial Department of Lands and Forestry also joined the efforts, as well as boats and crews from the Yarmouth Fire Department.

The water search included Tusket River and Chebogue River, both close to Highway 334 where Lefave was last seen.

Lefave was 20-years-old at the time of his disappearance. Sunday marked his 21st birthday

''A pair of businesses with close ties to missing Yarmouth County man Zachery Lefave are offering a reward for information that could help bring him home.

Lefave, from Hebron, was last seen in the early morning hours of New Year's Day after leaving a gathering in Plymouth.

"We're just hoping that with the reward we are hoping somebody may have seen him on the main road," said April Jayne, one of the co-owners of the Dayton Red and White, the local grocery store where Lefave worked.

The store is offering a reward of $1,000.

Another store in Kings County that used to employ Lefave is offering the same cash reward.

"He worked for us for a year and he integrated into being part of our family," said Nancy Roscoe-Huntley, who operates Huntley's Village Meat Market in Canning. "He's kind, funny, his smile was contagious and he's a great young man."

Nova Scotia RCMP said Zachery Lefave, from Hebron, was last spotted on Highway 334 in Plymouth around 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1. He was reported missing two hours later.

I feel like it's weird for them to stop the search when they haven't even utilized dogs.

Since the search began on January 2, Yarmouth, Clare and Barrington Ground Search and Rescue teams have conducted extensive searches but haven’t been able to locate Zachery.

There is a cash reward of over $4,000 put forward by a current and former employer of Lefave and the public. You can join the Facebook group, Bring Zack Lefave Home for more information and take part in the search. Do not search alone or go out unprepared.

''The family of a missing Yarmouth County man has been targeted by an online scam, according to Nova Scotia RCMP.

A family member of Zachery Lefave, who was last spotted in Plymouth on New Year's Day, received an unsolicited text message on Jan. 12 saying that Lefave was still alive but would be killed if they didn't send $7,000 in gift cards.

The family immediately contacted police without sending any money.

After an investigation, police determined the text appeared to have came from various locations in North America and Africa, as the sender had been using a virtual private network.''

Reminds me of Colin Gillis. I wish kids wouldn't try to walk home from parties in the cold in these remote areas. Much is made of the buddy system for women when drinking, I wish men were encouraged to use it more. So many lives would be saved if young men weren't allowed to go off alone when they'd been drinking.

That is so sad but true, thread after thread concern males who have gone missing after an evening of socializing, but then head out on their own and end up in the water or wilderness. imo.
